Why No Salad Bars in Groceries in TV?
Up north (Ohio), just about every grocery store had a salad bar. Why none in TV? Did they have them before Covid?
|
Publix in Colony never had a salad bar. I think Winn Dixie has a salad bar.
|
COVID. Yes, they had them before COVID.

W D had a salad bar, switched to an olive bar......................what a lovely day, everyone is correct.
:super::super::super: |
Just today Winn Dixie at Sumter Landing had a salad bar open from 10am until 5pm. I didn't notice a big selection of veggies to choose from.
|
Publix has one in Spanish Springs
|
I think I would be more comfortable eating from those pre-packaged salads than from a salad bar that's sitting out all day long.
|
I used to live very close to the Winn Dixie @ Pinellas Plaza. They had a decent salad bar but Covid took that away. The store manager told me it was a corporate decision.
|
IMHO open salad bars where you could help yourself went the way of the Dodo bird...too many issues with people eating at the salad bar vs. filling up a container to take to the register. Add Covid to the mix and it was a perfect storm just waiting to happen. I believe the Publix at Lake Deaton has an olive bar where you can help yourself....and they have a selection of prepackaged meals and deli items in the case for those that want to 'reheat' vs. cook

Many publixes have an olive bar, I used to work in New York City and every single street corner had salad bars and hot bars. I did not realize the benefits of eating like this for many years to keep my weight down. But if you really want to see the absolute best salad bars, you have to go to Los Angeles where they will have a huge area featuring hot foods and cold foods including all the different pizzas you want chicken wings, meats and veggies as well as wonderful sushi made to order. It's truly amazing the different styles of retailing from east coast to West Coast. That's one thing I will say the West Coast has over us. And not to change the subject but salad bars are still in several chain restaurants here besides the buffet restaurants, we do have a pretty nice salad bar in Ruby Tuesday. But the best salad bar I used to be in the Northeast and Charlie Brown's if people remember that place. They made their own breads and even had chopped liver, it was wonderful

No one remembers "Sweet Tomato" on 441? The mother of all salad bars!

Yes, we did. Remember, we have no anti-COVID rules here in Florida. The food stores eliminated them to protect you from other unvaccinated shoppers with no masks.

There are salad bars
When the lockdowns started, salad bars disappeared. But, I know the Publix, at both Rt 441 locations, have returned. Haven't been back in Winn Dixie for a while, but have to assume they have, also

The salad bars offer a excellent way to eat healthy if you skip the meat and the other high fat items. The health benefits far out weighs the risks from contamination.
And if you are one of those germaphobes then you may want to give your kitchen a close inspection especially if you bring in raw meat. You can never clean it all up the contamination. FYI, Your Kitchen Is Probably Dirtier than a Toilet Seat | Food & Wine |
Earth Fare in Ocala has one.

Sumter Landing WD
I used to love the salad bar at the Sumter Landing WinnDixie, but now, not so much. WD stopped the salad bar during covid, and although it has been re-started, it’s not that good any more. I think a Lot has to do with which employee is assigned to coordinated the ‘bar. Some are simply better than other’s. Sadly, WD isn’t using it’s “first team” on the ‘bar anymore - which in turn causes the sales to decline. Eventually, I expect the bar to simply be removed...(again) because it’s just not profitable anymore.

Salad bars
Not much of a fan of salad bars in grocery store, no one seems to monitor them for freshness as well as refilling and cleaning. Never sure how long items have been sitting there either, however I have seen them up north in NYC before we moved south. Those in NY were awesome but expensive.
When we lived in Georgia we used to go Jason’s Deli, really great salad bar, sandwiches made to order as well as homemade soups/chili. For holidays they also had pies and cakes to special order. Everything was super fresh and clean! Really wish they would franchise here. |
I used to use the salad bar at the Winn-Dixie frequently (yes, I wash my hands and am careful at these). The one at LSL seemed to be replenished frequently as I'd hit it different times. I've missed it, truth be told. I never saw anyone else doing weird stuff (picking at the various offerings with their hands). The deli-person seemed to take care in doing what she needed to do. The one at Publix (Grand Plaza) is a close 2nd but in my opinion wasn't quite as good. Covid has placed fear in so many people that they otherwise didn't have before. Suspician seems to be ever-present.

Publix at Buenas Aries Boulevard and 441
[QUOTE=wsachs;2023276]Winn Dixie in LSL has one, just like before. Never saw one in any of the Publix…
The Publix at 1566 Bella Cruz Drive, it’s at buenas Aries Boulevard and 441, has a pretty decent salad bar. I was just there last night. |
Have never seem them here
|
I lived in Ringgold, GA which was on the GA/TN line. There was a Jason's in Chattanooga and it was my favorite lunchtime restaurant!
