what do you use to get rid of rats.. there are many around and i would like to get rid of them..

villagetinker 11-15-2021 03:40 PM

If you have a lawn care company, we used Deans, and they placed traps. If the lawn care company will not do this, you can place poison, but you need to be real careful, as other animals that might eat the dead rats will also be killed by the poison. Personally, I would try rat traps.

Garywt 11-15-2021 05:27 PM

Where do you live that you have a rat problem.

You might think so, but most of the house kitties wouldn't have a clue. Feral cats with battle scars fighting to survive could do it, but then you'd have to deal with the feral cats. I vote for traps. Lots and lots of traps.

the 2-legged or 4-legged kind?

Rodents (mice and/or rats?) made a nest inside my electric pool heater (heat pump). After I completed repairs, I called Deans which we use for termite control and insect/pest control. They placed a bait (poison) box in the area near the heat pump. This is NOT a trap.

Re: cats
If, you go that route you want a female cat they are the hunters.
As far as traps, it is interesting as to how many different traps have been invented over the years. The common snap traps work fine, the secret is the bait-try peanut butter. Poison, the one commonly used causes the rodent to bleed internally. Since they do not vomit they die a slow death and will seek water. If, they die in the walls or attic it will stink. Years ago, I was sure it was a rat. I kept needing to re-bait the trap and having it sprung but missed. In the end it was a field mouse. Finally got hm with the arm of the trap. Point a rat trap does not only get, kill rats.

You are so right. A rat trap can indeed catch more than rats. Once, while baiting a trap, the trap caught me.
O.K. let the rat jokes begin. I can take it. I'll just sit here quietly and nibble my cheese. 😊

fdpaq0580 11-15-2021 07:43 PM

Thought.

If you or neighbors have bird feeders or throw out food for birds, you might want to stop doing that. Bird seed, crumbs and other foods like nuts or certain fruit will attract rats, mice, squirrels and more. You or your neighbors might actually be creating the problem.

Just a thought.

RICH1 11-15-2021 08:11 PM

evidently a food source is nearby! Rats & Mice love Birdseed!

Michael G. 11-15-2021 08:28 PM

If you have fruit trees, make sure the rotting fruit gets pick up.

One half of my barbecue grill cover was chewed up, set a rat trap, and got to rats in three days

I prefer to catch them in live traps and take them to Rat in the Box, where they are cooked properly and sold to hungry tourists.

if they look like the crap down the main streets definitely. They need to stay trimmed up otherwise you're giving them a place to hide out

BobTina 11-16-2021 06:55 AM

Look up ā€œmouse trapā€ in you tube

jimkerr 11-16-2021 07:15 AM

I used a combination of snap traps and the traps that electrocute the rat when they go inside for their bait food.

You're giving too much credit to female cat hunters. I've seen some feral males collect impressive quantities of mice - when they're hungry enough.

Often rats are driven from their normal ā€œhomesā€ by particularly wet weather, which we experienced this year.

We used Massey Services to get rid of the ones who invaded our lanai. Massey used a combination of traps (which they came and emptied when necessary) and poison outside. It took about two weeks, but we were again rat-free. I would recommend Massey highly.

The trouble with a cat is in TV you can’t leave a pet (cat) run free. Because I’m assuming the rat problem is outside, but if the rat problem is inside, well I would say there’s another issue with the owner.

Fred2016 11-16-2021 09:38 AM

Traps are the only thing that works however, rats will always be around.

Poison is a terrible idea and may kill other animals.

Our large male Maine Coon has caught many mice and rats in our CYV outside area. (Actually I think the rats are Voles.) If he refuses to come in when called I know he is stalking something. The Egyptians worshipped cats because they caught rats that tried to eat the grain people used for food. Cats will hunt even if they aren’t hungry.

As long as you don’t have pets, rat poison like D-Con, but if you have pets, I would call professionals. I used Drakes to get rid of moles…..they’re still working on getting rid of them. I have 2 little dogs so I was concerned about what they use

I think so too. Kinda hard to confuse a rat with a vole. Also don’t voles just have a sort little tail.

if you have Rat;s , then there is a food supply going on that is attracting them. Only through your trash out early morning on trash day not overnight, bird feeders will attract them. My thought, would not the Villages handle this problem. Ask your neighbors if they have this problem too, or is it just you. Then find the source of food. Pls do not put poison out other animals get into it and die... pls don't

The ā€œratsā€ are really mice from what I have seen. The snakes snack on them so it’s a win win at our place.
