OOMA - Home Phone Service
 
Is anyone using the OOMA Home Phone Service for what we used to call a "Land Line"
If so, what is your opinion of the service? Are you satisfied with the sound quality? Have you had any problems with the overall operation of the system, like dropped calls or poor conections? Any suggestions and or comments would be most appreciated.

It works just fine and fits the bill. Actually the 'bill' is about $5/mo - federal taxes. We have the ooma "land line" with 4 extension phones around the house. Also has voicemail. BUT - requires WIFI and electric. We've had ours for about 5 years and AOK. Also each have our cell phones.

We've used it for six years. Overall very happy with it. It has gone down occasionally, as when there is trouble with the Wi-Fi or the electricity is out, as another poster said. We have the premier service, which adds $10 to the monthly bill.

Had our land line phone number switched over to Ooma a few years ago. Costs about $40 to port your number over, and the Ooma box itself runs about $80. Works great. We now take the Ooma box and our "land line" number with us back and forth. You can access any phone voicemails on your cell phone, or call on Ooma through the app as well. A great idea if you want to keep your land line phone nuumber.

Have had it for about 7 years now, and love it. After buying the box (approximately $100) the monthly is $5-6 for tax only). I have premium at about $16 that allows fax and rings on my cell simultaneously when out of house. Sound is great.

6 years. No problems, minimal cost. If you have a power failure, of course, ooma will not function temporarily.

I have ooma for 11 yrs with premium service ($16 per month). Premium service also provides call blocking. Its a VOIP system and requires internet. I had to replace the ooma box about 5 yrs ago (I think an electrical surge may have damaged it). No other problems - works fine.

I have had VONAGE for over 15 years. Always liked it but now we get numerous spam calls everyday. Blocking doesn’t work because they just use a different number. Nomorobo stops a few calls but not many. So annoying that we may give up our landline. Is Ooma any better at stopping virtual calls?

We have it and love it. No problems in the two years we have used it. Sound is excellent. It doesn’t drop calls. I guess it might if your internet connection went out while using it.

My spouse and I have had OOMA for years. We couldn't get our mothers to call our cell phones and the land line was either a salesman or a mom...so OOMA reduced the price substantially. We will keep OOMA till we do not need it any longer and then go strictly cell.

I've been using Magic Jack for a couple of years now. $40 for the year. So far good calls, no dropped calls, Etc. Has all features included such as call forwarding, etc.

I have used it for almost eight years. I also use one in a second house. Can't beat the price and long distance in USA.

We've had Ooma since 2013. When we switched from Comcast home phone to Ooma, we saved over $45/month. Back then Ooma was rated #1 internet phone by Consumer Reports. You will need to purchase the base unit ($72 on Amazon) and pay $35 to have your phone # "ported" from your current service to Ooma. It took about a week. The monthly cost is just a bit over $5/month for the basic service which has served us just fine. According to Ooma, we've saved $3,851 since 2013. The only issues we've had are when either electricity or wi-fi go down.

Don't know if it's better or worse. There are levels at which you can set security preferences. Ours is set at the next highest level (the highest level being only numbers on your designated phone list can call). I used to block spam calls, a feature of premium service, until the block list numbered a thousand, and the spam calls didn't stop.

Used magic jack over 10 years ago, it was terrible back then. Then went to ooma with no issues at all. Used ooma with a set of 4 wireless phones with a base module that also did voicemail so now I had 2 devices that could trap voicemails so I had to check in 2 places. After using this setup for many years with 3 numbers (mine, my wife’s cell phone numbers, and ooma), and 4 voicemail locations (iPhones (2), ooma, and the phone to ooma), we got rid of all of that and just use cell.

Didn't work for us!
 
About 5 years ago we tried OOMA. I got a new number. The person on the other end always complained about hearing an echo of themselves. We could not hold a conversation. Didn't matter if it was local or long distance. We also noticed a lag in the conversation. I think their server is in California. Each time I called OOMA Service, they said "we'll upload new firmware to your unit". Did that 5 times (each version was the same, BTW). They could not fix the problem. We are on Xfinity BLAST so that should be fine.
Just did not work for us.
Getting our money back before the "trial period" ran out was nearly impossible. All they wanted to do was upload "new firmware". They work off a script.
I wanted it to work but here in The Villages it just didn't operate properly.
Be sure you document everything and good luck getting a refund if it doesn't.
Took 2 months for the refund after we shipped back the device with the RMA number.

Get a new phone number to start. If it works, move your old land line number over to OOMA and drop the new number.

I’ve had OOMA for a few years. Service is very good. The monthly price is also very good…BUT the yearly charge is expensive…$130.

we had OOMA for several years. we switched to Majic Jack because they have a call blocking feature that has shut down 99.9% of ROBO calls. Ooma didn't have it. Bill is about the same$50 per year. very satisfied with Majic Jack.

We had OOMA for years even traveled back and forth with us. Always worked fine but eventually gave up on land line. Do not need the upgraded service if you have an answer machine.

Ooma is such a deal
 
We had it for years up north, just fired it up down here. Have never had a problem with dropped calls or anything like that. Quality is very good. Can hear your "home land line" voice mails remotely on your cell phone.

I was thinking of dropping it down here but the wife does not hear very well and would probably not move her cell phone from room to room, so I am going to keep it so it will ring in handsets all over the house, important for her doctor related calls.

No dropped calls. An extra security blanket in case of cellular failure. They are easy to deal with and available with a good tech support!
We have had it for years. Also have the fax line available. Super easy install. Just has to be connected to a computer.

We have a OOMA for several years and the quality is very good and customer service is good. We replaced our Magic Jack which had marginal quality. We really liked the advantage of being able to keep our phone number from NY however this at times causes a minor problem; Our cell phones have a 352 area code but some people assume or home phone (OOMA) with a 607 area code is our cell number and will text it. You can't text a OOMA phone (or any other home home )!

Ooma Phone Service
 
We've had Ooma Service for about 5 years now. Totally love it. Our landlines phones speak and tell us who is calling (if you put it in your phone) and if it's just a phone number we know it's robo calling and don't answer it. It has worked expertly and was a lifesaver for my husband who has Parkinson's. He couldn't manage learning a cell phone - and this gave him his independence back. What a price! I thought it was too good to be true - but it is not. We have 5 cordless phones linked into it throughout the house and one in the golf cart garage.

When we moved here going on 5 years ago (can't believe it's been that long!), we got complaints about the quality of sound for our cell phone calls, particularly if the caller on the other end was also using a cell phone. We decided to add a land line but those really aren't available everywhere or all that affordable. We read some reviews and went with Ooma. After buying the modem (for around $60 if I recall), the monthly bill runs about $5, which at the time was cheaper than even MagicJack. Very easy to set up and, provided you have half-way decent internet speeds, the audio quality is excellent. My sister-in-law loaned us her MagicJack setup and we tried it and really didn't notice any difference in the audio quality. Your mileage may vary.

We get zero robo calls on our Ooma number.

If you don't put it out it does not get sold/used.

when I started reading your post I was thinking OMG how many phones do people need and then you ended with the only sensible solution JUST CELL PHONES, I’m a cord cutter since 2000

We've had Ooma for more than 10 years. For the best sound quality I hooked up the Ooma box directly to the modem and then the router off Ooma. A couple of weeks ago I replaced my Panasonic answering system and cordless handsets with an AT&T system with Smart Call Blocker. Robo calls can't get through because any calls outside your directory or allowed number list must press the pound key. Live callers not on your lists have to announce their name first and then you can choose to accept or permanently reject. So far works great.
