Get out your phone and first photograph how it is wired. Then remove the eye and take it to Lowes or Ace and ask for an exact replacement.

villagetinker 12-08-2021 06:23 PM

OP, make sure you TURN OFF THE POWER to the lamp post at the circuit breaker panel, before you do anything!

Your very welcome! :)

I find it shocking people don't turn off the power before working on electric circuits. (Sorry, bad dad joke).

Wish I had read this thread first. Just paid Galaxy Home Solutions Electric $175 to replace the solar lens (electric eye). I thought the problem was a short in the wiring under the landscaping. Now I can’t get Galaxy to send me a receipt.

Not sure what you are saying. Part of what you pay a pro for is knowledge. You wondered, they diagnosed and repaired the problem. Typical charges run $100 for the tech to arrive then, the repair. Actually if you had other repairs that need to be done, they would not, or should not charge you the $100 to show up.

My neighbor replaced his. He never checked. The eye was fine-the bulb was blown.

Light stays on all day when photocell is bad.

sdeikenberry 12-10-2021 05:57 AM

Photocells fail to the positive...meaning they let power flow through 24/7. The easy fix is to buy a bulb with a photocell built in and forget messing with the accessory photocell that has failed. Just screw in the new bulb and you're in business. About $6 at big box stores.

Dawn to dusk bulbs

I agree with this. I replaced with dawn to dusk bulbs, easy solution.

Maybe at ACE Hardware. But, at Lowes, I wouldn't count on it.

birdawg 12-10-2021 06:37 AM

Ace is the place. Especially in Wildwood they are great

ogme480 12-10-2021 06:46 AM

Status Quo or Upgrade

There are two different ones typically available at Lowe's or Ace Hardware. Two-year vs ten-year warranty with a difference of around $10.

By pass it completely. Turn of circuit breaker, remove old eye, direct wire light to power. Cap the hole and replace bulb with an LED dusk to dawn light , turn power back on

Or, if you're lazy, just tape or paint over the light sensor, and install the dawn to dusk bulb. Note, that some lamp posts have 3 bulbs that you need to replace.

No need to go through all that extra work if the sensor failed in the “on” position as they typically do. Just replace the bulb with the dusk to dawn bulb as you suggested.

RoadToad 12-10-2021 08:43 AM

Maybe, maybe not..

If it stays on all the time, save yourself a lot of trouble and get a “socket” that screws onto the socket in the post that has a sensor built in.

DonnaNi4os 12-10-2021 09:08 AM

Speaking of lampposts, I found out that some of my neighbors have an electrical outlet on the pole. It would be wonderful especially during the holiday season. Unfortunately mine isn’t one of them. Just wondering why some houses have them and some don’t?

You can go to Amazon and order a screw in light bulb socket that has a built in outlet. It will raise the height of the bulb by about an inch or so.

Ace Hardware typically carries items specific to TV. Call and ask if they have one.

Probably because the homeowner or a previous one had the outlet installed, fairly easy to do, and yes I agree, very handy this time of year. I think I am going to modify ours.

wamley 12-10-2021 04:02 PM

Ace Hardware seems to have everything connected to a Village house othere then siding and the like, but all the small items.

You don't need the extra socket. You can just buy a bulb with built in sensor.

EviesGP 12-11-2021 09:41 AM

As long as it fits(physically) into the hole, and has 3 wires, just about anyone will work.
