Washer making loud grinding like noise

During a wash cycle my 10 year old Whirlpool washer started making a loud grinding like noise. Never heard a sound like that before. Had to shut washer down with a full tub of rinse water. Looks like time for a new washer. Looking for recommendations as to where to buy both a new washer and dryer. Thinking about an LG. Thanks for replies and Happy New Year!

Best Buy or Lowes. Home Depot is not as friendly to deal with.

I wouldn't limit my choice to LG. I really don't think that the brand matters that much. Make sure that the brand you buy has local warranty repair technicians available. I think that Whirlpool and GE both do.

As far as friendly, I would expect it depends on the particular employee who helps you.
I watch people, shoppers in action. People waiting to speak to a sales person and some of the entitled masses decides to cut in. Imagine dealing with that all day long and needing the job. I've found good people and not so good people at all the mentioned stores. Today, I do most of my shopping on line. I research if they have it in stock and where in the store it is. In terms of repair service, they are all great in their ads. Reality is the reviews and not the ones the company filters on their website.
Often the problem is having parts for repairs. I do not claim to be an expert. We have Whirlpool it is ten years old. We had a warranty repair that the company did at N/C the unit was about a year out of warranty.

Far as our washer and dryer, we bought GE, we bought units with as few gadgets as possible. My view the more gadgets the more repairs. They are also ten years old.
Only repair was a PLASITIC knob. The knob has been redesigned. Clearly they knew
they had a poorly designed part. I patched it. When it broke again, after two or so years, I gave in and bought the new part for roughly $10.

LG is made in Korea-I think. Current trade issues may cause a buyer trouble.

If you are handy or enjoy DIY it might be a simple DIY fix. Look up your model number, enter on Google and likely find dozens of YouTube videos to help. There isn't too much to a washer or dryer. If you want a new one, GO FOR IT! :) Our washer (~5 yrs old) recently stopped running and thanks to YouTube found out it was a bad lid lock switch. $13 and 36hrs later (thanks Amazon) it was fixed.

A whirlpool washer motor and coupler is around $150 labor price unknown beats a new washer @ $1000

You do not say that your and this washing machine have been together for 10 years and if it has been a regular problem. Or if the wife wants a new washing machine and dryer a problem that new machines are cheaper than counseling.

I would, fish out the clothes and see if something left in the pockets etc is causing the noise. It would not be the first time that someone discovered where their cell phone ended up.

Getting rid of the water. I've seen too many murder movies and so would not use plug in tools to drain water. Easy solutions. You can buy inexpensively a hand pump.
You can buy inexpensively a pump to use with a rechargeable drill. You can buy inexpensively a pump designed as a small boat bilge pump that you can run off a 12 v battery. You have one in your golf cart. Simple to remove and put back.

A repair person? Typical roughly 85 to come to your home. Parts, $30 or so. Cost 100-150. Far less than buying new.

Truth, they do not make them like they used to. In our previous home we got a maytag
washer with the original purchase and a GE dryer. After 40 years they were still running. We left them with the house when we sold it. Said in the contract no warranty.

My sister has a GE refrigerator that came with her house when she bought it. She gave or sold the house to her daughter about ten years ago. It was the type with the motor on top. The date on the motor is 1936. Far as I know it is still running.

Mine started making some weird noises as well. Picked up both in Best Buy.

Washer making loud grinding like noise

Divorce him today and look for someone younger.

We bought from Lowes and was very happy with product, price and service.

FWIW we bought a Maytag pair. They look and appear to have the same features which tells me they are made in the same place and just put different names on them....

Grinding Noise - Top Load Washer - Product Help | Maytag

LizzieBorden 01-01-2022 05:49 AM

I just replaced my Maytag washer and Dryer which I purchased 14 years ago from Home Depot. I now have a new Maytag washer and dryer…and I hope they last as long. I know whirlpool now owns Maytag….but from my discovery, it appears they are still manufactured in their own plant. Home Depot in NY, southern Fl and here in the villages have always been great to work with.

Do some research. Consumer Reports has a list of all the washers & dryers and how reliable and efficient they are.

Lulupop 01-01-2022 07:02 AM

We recently replaced both washer and dryer. Got GE front loaders at Home Depot. They connect to our wifi and I get alerts when the load is almost finished or reminders if the load has been in the machine for a while. The dryer has a wonderful steam function that I can use when I don’t get the clothes out in time to avoid wrinkles. It refreshes them and lets me avoid ironing them. They have much larger load capacity and we can wash and dry large items like comforters. We love the new GE appliances.

Luggage 01-01-2022 07:05 AM

Whirlpool Has purchased most of the US brands. Bosch , lg, etc are separately owned. You can do research. My mother had terrible eyesight and I only knew one cycle to put everything on which was regular.. If you are picky you may want many of the multi-cycle ones or the ones with steam cleaning. All I need is 3 Cycles personally small medium and large and when I have bedding in there there is an extra rinse button that I use occasionally that I use with two soaps. Please know if it's a front load you're looking at now which is 90% of the market for water efficiency how about most of the Soaps are in pod form and are high efficiency you only need one in reality

Oneiric 01-01-2022 07:59 AM

Sounds like motor bearings. We bought Whirlpool from Appliance Direct on 441. Avoided the higher priced Samsung, LG,Bosch which do NOT last any longer, sometimes shorter because of more do-dads, hard to get parts, very questionable availability.

The grinding your hearing is coming from what is referred to as the transmission or gearcase. We just had the same issue with our 10 year old top load Maytag washer. I replaced the gearcase and problem solved. I have another new gearcase that might fit your Whirlpool if you want to send me the model number I can let you know if it will fit your machine. It would save you from buying a new washer and give you a number of years of more service.

BlackHarley 01-01-2022 08:24 AM

Yup. I Second transmission bearings. Had that same kinda noise followed by transmission fluid leakage under the washer. Had the Maytag hauled away when we bought our new SpeedQueen washer and dryer. Steel gears and and old fashioned rotary timer.
Less crap to break. Commercial units in laundromats are all Speedqueen. The only differences are the homeowner version has no coin box.

JMintzer 01-01-2022 08:33 AM

I find Jewelry stops that grinding noise... :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

Oh, settle down! I do plenty of laundry! I do all of my own, plus the towels. It's the least I can do (and never let it be said I didn't do the least I could do!)

Ten years? I think you got more than your money's worth out of that washer. Probably not worth fixing at this point.

As far as new ones go...I've had some not-so-good experiences with the LG line of stuff in the past. Not washers but electronics. They seem to be priced more cheaply but, as they say, you get what you pay for. Maytag, GE, etc. are known names. Another brand to consider is Bosch. They're not as well known but I know a couple of people who have had them and think they're great.

My whirlpool was going the same thing a few months ago. Repair man said the noise wasn’t a problem with it working at that moment but it would eventually breakdown. I forget what he told us was wrong, but He told us it would cost about $ 400 to $500 to repair it. We lived with it until it sounded like a 747 taking off in our laundry room. We bought Whirlpool again at Lowe’s. My advice If you’re short, I’m 5’3”, test the reach. We shopped all the new fancy features, but didn’t check reach. I have to use salad tongs to get those socks at the bottom. Funny, but true. A real pain in the xxx. 😂

I'm not sure I understand why the knock to Home Depot unless poster has had a bad experience (once?) with Home Depot. I have bought several full appliance packages from Home Depot in the past and they have been amazing to deal with. This year I replaced my 'xtra' garage frog. from them and when the one I ordered was not available because of supply problems...they searched and searched for a replacement and ended up giving me a much more expensive and larger model at the original price I was paying for the one they could not provide ....which was far less money. I was delighted and would highly recommend working with Home Depot.

When I bought a washer and dryer from Home Depot, I had to sign an orange sheet that said I had to identify any cosmetic defects immediately upon delivery, or they would not replace them. The washer and dryer were delivered about 8 PM, after dark, and luckily, I used a flashlight to see that the washer had a dent on the front. The delivery people actually wanted to install the dryer and take back the washer. I refused to accept either of them, and got a refund the next day. I went to Lowes and bought another washer and dryer, and their policy was that I had 30 days to identify defects and get a return. Also, they also were able to schedule a daytime delivery, which Home Depot would not do. That was about 5 years ago, so I don't know if the Home Depot policy has changed.

10 years is the useful life of a washer/dryer.

For appliances, I am a fan of following the recommendations of Consumer Reports.

We used CR's test results and recommendations to buy the cheapest LG high efficiency top loader washer and matching dryer. We wanted a top loader washer as the laundry room is narrow and we didn't want to bend over pull the wet laundry out of a front loader. The dryer is, of course, a front loader, but by the time the clothes are dry, they are much lighter.

We could not be happier with this combination and were surprised at the performance of the top loader washing machine. The purchase was made at Lowe's. Their delivery service was fine. One hint--make certain the delivery persons place the dryer door so it opens on the side next to the washer. Ours didn't do so and I had to stop them as they were leaving to come back and reverse the door.

Don't get LG unless you get a extended ], MFG Warranty or one from the Place of Purchase ie: Lowe's, Best Buy or Home Depot because others might have an issue

Try Costco on-line. They have a large selection from which to choose.
They install the new one, take away the old one and add an extra year to the warranty, giving you 2 years. They also offer an addition 3 years priced reasonably.

That being said, if you have a little DIY in you, you can remove the agitator or impeller (either of which your washer has). One plastic cap and one screw. Once removed look and see if there's anything there that doesn't belong, like a coin, or in my case, a little metal button. If you have something there that may be the problem and removing it may solve the problem. If there's nothing there I'd recommend buying a new unit as you could wind up replacing the stator, rotor, gearcase/transmission and maybe even the tub. Been there, done that. Mine was under warranty (the 2nd Costco year) so they replaced everything - 4 visits. Long story but the apprentice repairman messed up the repair (stator and rotor) so it went from a slight grinding noise, to an overwhelming grinding noise (stator) to a loud base drumming noise during the spin cycle which was the tub. Another stator and tub finally corrected the subsequent issues. 9 months later it's still quiet as a mouse. I'm convinced the metal button was causing the initial grinding noise but they wanted to replace other parts. Who was I to object?

My advice, put new jeans in with the whites on the first load and you will never do laundry again.

Truth we were married for years. I thought I was getting away with something and convinced her I do not know how to run was. She told me she does not know how to run a lawn mower. I had some surgery. Go figure she started the mower and did a good job on the lawn. After the stitches were out, she no longer knew how to run the lawnmower.

REALITY-you are dueling with a professional-way out of your competitive level.

You were dealing with a transport company, a trucker. That paper they asked, demanded, you sign is called a bill of lading. When you sign a clean bill of lading you are saying all is fine. Dishonorable-sometimes. But, it can be on the other side as well.
People damage the product and CLAIM it arrived that way. Explaining not defending anyone.

There are front loader and top loader washing machines and dryers. As no one has a basement; I so miss mine, storage is limited. In our laundry room, I put in a storage rack. Thus, we have top loaders. A front loader, not sure if we even have room to open the door in any case it would be limited space.

Thanks. I agree. But my point is that Lowes didn't require the form, they agreed to only deliver the appliance during the day, and they gave me 30 days to return the appliance if I noticed a defect. That was a way better deal than Home Depot offered. In checking the Lowes current website, they now require the appliance to be returned within 3 days. But, that is plenty of time to notice a cosmetic defect. For Home Depot to expect a customer to fully inspect a product for defects and accept it immediately when it is delivered in the dark, is unacceptable. I bought the appliances in the Home Depot retail store, not from a trucking company.

I bought a GE washer and it has been a wonderful machine. Did not replace dryer as I have finally come to grips in my old age that I don’t need matching appliances.
