Coral Snake

1 Attachment(s)
In one of the new sections under development. Here is a good thing to remember - The rhyme goes, 'red touching black, safe for Jack. Red touching yellow, kill a fellow'. This is the only rhyme that will identify a coral snake, one of the deadly serpents in North America.

davem4616 02-14-2022 09:02 AM

nasty little critters

billethkid 02-14-2022 09:33 AM

Are you stating one was seen in the new construction area?

That is the way I understood it.

How about, "if yellow separates black and red, leave it be or wind up dead."??
Or,"red and black, yellow always between, run away, run away, they are deadly and mean".

Sorry, I like rhymes and got carried away. Absolutely gorgeous shot of this potentially deadly neighbor.
Thank you for sharing.

Or nose is black. It's bad for jack.

They aren't nearly as dangerous as people make them out to be. Actually they are an extremely docile snake.

O.K. for those schooled in snakes and snake handling. But don't encourage the general public to chance messing with anything they are not familiar with.

ex34449 02-14-2022 10:51 AM

I'm not. Just stating a fact, they are a very docile snake. I didn't say go out and catch one.

Thank you for the warning. We are closing the garage door regularly.

ex34449 02-14-2022 11:40 AM

Coral snakes are burrowing snakes. Highly doubtful you will ever see one in your garage.

jpvillager 02-14-2022 12:04 PM

What makes them deadly is most hospitals do not keep anti-venom because there are so few bites. It has to be brought in by mercy flight. There is a beneficial king snake that looks similar but with the right banding.

For the snake's sake, I hope not.

By the time you think about and recite your rhyme, you’ll be dead !!

That doesn’t rhyme either !! ;)

Swamp or new development

Had a house 5 houses away from the Sharon and saw 2 water mocassins around our yards. Below 44 with a swamp in your backyard what do you think may end up in your yard?

G.R.I.T.S. 02-15-2022 08:51 AM

OR…in a panic just look for the black nose.

OhioBuckeye 02-15-2022 09:13 AM

Never heard anybody say they saw a Coral snake in TV but I knew someone that had a Pygmy Rattle Snake in their lanai. My brother in law killed a Coral Snake in his garage in Harbour Hills.

HRDave 02-15-2022 09:31 AM

Coral vs. King Snake

I always taught my Paramedic students; “Red on Black, Venom will lack. Red on yellow will kill a fellow “.

All you need to remember is Red on Yellow. 😎

Brandon ??

tvmurray 02-15-2022 11:06 AM

Just chop them up, then don't worry about the rhyme.

I use the bands as the cut here marks!

WAIT WAIT, I know one: "Jack and Jill went up the hill"

Rats, I never heard if they ever got back down.

Bjeanj 02-15-2022 04:04 PM

Well, they may be docile, until they’re not. You can be sure I’ll run the other way regardless of whether they’re a coral snake or a corn snake!

BTW, the manufacturer stopped production of coral snake antivenin in 2006.

... because there haven't been any deaths from one in probably 50 years

Thank you for this. I can never remember this poem but think I might have it memorized now.

I would head in the other direction anyway. :)

"... To fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down and broke his crown, so Jill called Dan Newlin and they settled out of court". At least that's the way my mother used to tell it.

That may well be true, but the only treatment now is supportive care, which includes airway management with mechanical ventilation. I’d rather 1) not get bitten, or 2) have the anti venom available rather than a tube down my throat.

I still plan on running the other way.

montagnard1969 02-15-2022 05:31 PM

Snakes

The best policy is never touch or attempt to pick up a snake without a snake hook or noose grabber. Even though you are sure about the species not being poisonous. It is possible to be bitten by a snake if it feels threatened and why take a chance when it's not necessary. If you are going to mess with them have the proper equipment to catch them and protect yourself, a bucket [or burlap sack] with a secure lid to transport them. Best policy is to leave them alone or chase them off. They will leave unless they feel trapped, then they'll fight.

I was fishing in a Florida lake and wearing shorts in about 3 feet of water when a 3 ft mocassin swam by close to my leg. I didn't move and he swam right by. He had a triangular head.

Yeah, I agree, as long as you can see the head. The RED-nosed version looks like it would be the bad one, but it's definitely NOT! It's the black-nosed version.

The red-nosed is the safe king snake, and the black-nosed is the coral snake.
