1883 or Yellowstone - Which Should I Watch First?

I asked this question on a related thread but got no replies, so I'm starting this separate thread because I really would like some opinions...

Whaddayathink? :)

Stu from NYC 02-18-2022 03:12 PM

Do not think you can go wrong with either

Taltarzac725 02-18-2022 03:31 PM

They are not closely connected, so either one.

Au contraire, Davonu, your question was not overlooked.

I guess you missed it.

I quoted and answered your question in the other thread. It is Post #49, on January 10, in the thread about 1883.

Of course, I elaborated, as I am wont to do, on why I liked having seen Yellowstone first. But, that’s just me, analyzing character motivation. It probably works fine, either way.

Start with Yellowstone. It gives you insight into the characters and culture.
1883 is a prequel for a reason.

Not sure I understand this. What is the “reason”? It almost seems like a “reason” might be that a prequel comes first…which might mean watching it first is the thing to do. No? :)

So far, to date, I have seen all the episodes of Yellowstone and got to know all the characters. I then started watching 1883 and have seen all so far. Personally, I would suggest watching Yellowstone first because it develops characters and the reason why they are where they are. Consider 1883 as a sort of prequel which will help make it clear where the Yellowstones main characters came from.

NEITHER...
:boom::popcorn::popcorn:

richardc1947 02-19-2022 06:24 AM

Either one. We started watching Yellowstone 3 years ago and have now watched 3 full seasons. We started watching 1883 and have watched all episodes that have been released thus far. No connection so far other than the last name of the pioneers being the same as the last name of the present day land owners in Yellowstone.

Jimmay 02-19-2022 06:49 AM

Personally I don’t care for programs with nudity or foul language. It’s unnecessary in telling the story.

The Range 02-19-2022 06:59 AM

Yellowstone. You can watch the seasons. By the time you are done, the other will have a complete season to watch.

Paulettesuejohn 02-19-2022 07:02 AM

Yellowstone started first, so we started with that but 1883 tells how Yellowstone first came to be, so it’s about the chicken or the egg- both are really good places to start!

banjobob 02-19-2022 07:06 AM

Yellowstone by far

OhioBuckeye 02-19-2022 07:12 AM

If you’re saying which one should you watch. Well I’m taking it like read your comment, I would say start with S1/E1.

Joe C. 02-19-2022 07:32 AM

YELLOWSTONE ......You can binge watch all the episodes so far.
Just do it........and enjoy!

Looper1273 02-19-2022 07:39 AM

Yellow stone for sure!!

daddys55 02-19-2022 07:39 AM

Neither

Unless you enjoy filthy language don't watch either I would love to watch just terrible language what is this world coming to

Captainpd 02-19-2022 08:19 AM

Two pages of the same answer. Characters from 1883 aren't in Yellowstone so there is no "development" of characters

mskaggs 02-19-2022 08:22 AM

I watched the first episode of Yellowstone a while ago (a year?) and was bored to tears so I didn’t continue. 1883 came and I watched every episode and was wowed. Now I am watching Y with a better appreciation for the characters and I am not finding it so boring. But as others have commented, it doesn’t really matter which you watch first!

I’ve watched both and really don’t think it matters. They are really completely different. I understand a new one is coming out, but can’t remember the name. Both are good, but I liked Yellowstone better.

There is nothing about either that would matter which one you watch first. More episodes of Yellowstone are available now. 1883 gets released each week.

Taltarzac725 02-19-2022 09:07 AM

1932.

The new one is 1932. 1932 News, Cast, Premiere Date - Everything We Know About the Yellowstone Prequel 1932

Mhorn18 02-19-2022 09:19 AM

Yellowstone first then prequel 1883.

Both are great but I preferred Yellowstone and now 1883. It will help understand the battle to keep their land.

To wrap up season 3 explosive finale of characters getting attacked to see what happened to the Duttons, watch Season 4 of Yellowstone first, then watch 1883. Soon there will also be another related show called 1932. Enjoy!!

I have been watching both. It does not matter which series you watch first.

sloanst 02-19-2022 10:44 AM

Yellowstone has completed it's 4th season. I think it was about the 3rd season that I asked myself "How did this ranch get started in the first place." Now 1883 is answering that question.

Hey! Nope. It was Post #49. You made me look again though. Checked both the old and new versions of TOTV. Oh well, the mystery continues.

I still like Yellowstone first better. But if this whole thing is sounding good to you, just go ahead and make a commitment to getting started. Warning: You could get hooked.

You say 48. I say 49. Don’t worry. I will not go all “Beth Dutton” on you.

The Dutton characters are cut from a different cloth than probably most people, who would have taken the fortune they were offered and gone on to a different kind of life without their land. But the Duttons stay and fight constant battles in a war that seems to be allowing only a series of temporary victories. The Duttons keep doing allllll kinds of things to hold on.

Then there are the family dynamics that can feel kind of Shakespearean sometimes.

When you later see 1883, it shows what the previous generations of Duttons were made of, too.

Tough bunch. . .Nature? Nurture?

To the posters who commented on the foul language: I am not a prude, BUT, I certainly agree that the constant reaching for that type of language gets old pretty quick. I think it turns into a distraction because it is too much. I don’t know why writers think they have to do that constantly — and then some more.

Of course, certain characters are never going to say, “Aw, shucks” or “Phooey” — that would be really bad writing.

But so many writers go over the top with “the word.” It is like ruining a perfectly grilled steak with way too much salt. I wish they would get a good editing. Some — OK. Every other word — not OK. But it does not keep me from watching a good storyline.

Rough language and nudity are like the tip of the iceberg of world problems. Many people see nudity in movies as art. And rough language as being reality. Real western characters in 1883 did NOT talk like Roy Rogers and Dale Evans from 1950s on TV.

That is typical of 1st episodes. They lay the groundwork for a series or single movie. Then they improve as the plot thickens.

for the all immersive experience add to your list
centennial. A mini series based on james michener s book 1795 to 1970s colorado
&
deadwood. South dakota 1870s
&
the gilded age
a series centering on 1870s new york city and some of the robber barons who's new wealth and aspirations fueled the westward expansion of all the aforementioned series in this thread in the cause of manifest destiny.
A side benefit is the culture clash of old vs new money aristocracies which dominated the era.

They both tell stories of a family - one headed to Oregon in 1883, and their future relatives trying to hold onto their land in Montana. The scenery, drama, and action are outstanding in both. It does not matter which one you watch first. Just DO watch them!

It would be cool to watch 1883 first! But must of us wasn’t given that option.

1883 or Yellowstone

No contest, cable already costs way to much. I am not going to pay more to watch something . I would like to watch 1883 and it will be on a cable station sooner or later but until the Yellowstone.

wjg74 02-20-2022 09:38 AM

1883

1883 is suppose to the prelude to Yellowstone.
A terrfic series with great actors. I would definitely
start with 1883

jimmy D 02-20-2022 10:53 AM

Lot of bad language. Too much

Roron123 02-20-2022 11:05 AM
