Sleepless in "the Villages" part 2

After an evening of, solving all the world problems, listening to the harmony of my 4-pawed fur Ball and the old boy with their synchronized snoring, I resorted to getting out my tablet and playing games. Surely to goodness there is a better solution. Suggestions????

How about a cup of chamomile tea, a melatonin tablet and a nice book. No screens (tv, tablet, computer).

That will work, thanks

Sometimes, I listen to a book on Audible with AirPods. But, if you do that, look at where you begin because you will go to sleep while the book just keeps on going.

Sometimes, I try to bore the heck out of my overtime brain by visualizing the map of the US and trying to name all the state capitals (not out loud though)……BISMARCK! Where art thou? North? South?……………..ok. deep breath….visualize map……top to bottom…..associate…..alphabetical, top to bottom…….GOT IT!

Sometimes, I start with the 13 colonies. Sometimes, I start out west. Sometimes, I do a random start. But eventually, I bore myself to sleep before all 50 are accounted for.

Get a "white noise" machine...

My wife swears by it when "the dog*" is snoring...

*That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

For many various reasons I am up late into the night many nights. Between the tv and the tablet I keep myself busy. I take my sleeping pills at some point but they don’t always help. Sometimes I listen/watch music videos that put me to sleep.

thelegges 02-21-2022 04:03 AM

After 40 plus years of on call, sleep is still a challenge. But I can nap within minutes, and wake quickly. I avoid caffeine except for 7am coffee.
I find that if I go to my iPad, as I am now, I will rarely go back to sleep. If I read a paper book, I can return to sleep within an hour. I don’t use an herbal tea, or OTC meds. A sleep study with a Cpap for spouse maybe answer for spouse snoring, the pet however you have much less control.:ohdear:

I used to have problems sleeping due to irregular hours, dozing in the chair watching tv.
I changed to a more regimented regime, of going to bed at 10pm. reading for 20-30 minutes, and gradually my brain accepted this, and sleep came a lot easier.
A long walk every day, no dozing in front of tv (I seldom watch the thing these days anyway) also helps.
I now hit the pillow, and just sleep.

Two well made vodka screwdrivers just before bed works wonders. I recommend it.

You must have missed "and the old boy", their synchronized" and "harmony", which most likely means her dog AND her husband...

Move to the spare room and get a noise maker with the Wind sound😉 Dr. Dave

dennisgavin 02-21-2022 08:02 AM

pillow speaker

I have a pillow speaker I got from C Crane company it has batteries in line on the cord and shuts off after about 45 minutes, IF you wake up again there is a button on the battery compartment that I push and the speaker goes on again for 45 minutes. I use a internet streaming radio but you can use a regular one if it has a jack for the speaker phone plug. THe speaker has a foam cover on it.

A few Fireball shots will do the trick.

Bay Kid 02-21-2022 09:02 AM

Half a Advil PM each night. Then I close my eyes and start playing executive golf courses in my mind.

jebartle 02-21-2022 09:32 AM

Great suggestions, thanks folks!

WAX EARPLUGS. Several years ago we were on a river cruise in Portugal and we pulled into Porto for the night. All went well until about 1 am I was awakened by the most Gxd awful noise you ever heard, we were across from a nightclub and they opened with music at 1 am and continued until 4 am. Next day I went into town and found a drug store and they recommended wax earplugs and they are the very best. They mold into your ears and you will hear NOTHING, the world could come to an end and you would hear NOTHING. Click here Amazon.com

Please push for your spouse to get a sleep study. Snoring is normally sleep apnea and a CPAP machine will make them sleep better and you sleep better. I got my CPAP 6 years ago and I love it as much as my wife does.

It’s when the dog wants to go out in the middle of the night that kills me. Snoring =sleeping

haysus7 02-21-2022 04:34 PM

Sleepy time tea works too

I did a sleep study when I was snoring a lot. Every machine I tried made me feel like I was suffocating! My dentist friend made be a dental appliance that helped a bit, but didn't solve the problem.

I went on a diet, lost 50 lbs and the snoring went away...

I had a cat that snored, he like to lie right by my head too. That cat is gone now. I’d like to hear him snore again….

A nice warm bath with aromatherapy oil or a “bath bomb”, and half a glass of warm milk and I’m out like a light. I’m a light sleeper. I wake up to the house creaking, hubby snoring, wind howling, early lawn mowing, so I go to sleep wearing swimmer’s ear plugs (which also reduces noise) on a long necklace. Then IF some noise wakes me up I slip them in, easy to do in the dark, and I’m back to sleep. The neighbor asked me the other day, if I was home when they started working on replacing my roof at 6:30 am. I said yes, I slept through the pounding till 9:30 am.
