Free......

What better way to get the attention of Villagers?

2 days ago there was a story on the front page of the "Daily Sun" about a free service offered by Sumter Co.(also Lake Co.)
It's like Home Title Lock IMHO but instead of $19.95 a month it's FREE. We signed up and feel a little better. All explained in this Link that most will be afraid to open.... lol. :icon_wink:

I signed up the day it was announced. I’m still alive.

retiredguy123 03-10-2022 01:19 PM

I use the Lake County service. You register your name in several different formats, and your email address. Then, if there are any property related transactions using your name, the County will send you an email.

I would never pay for the Title Lock service. A ripoff, in my opinion.

Ecuadog 03-10-2022 01:24 PM

Thank you.

Velvet 03-10-2022 01:27 PM

Signed up, thank you.

Thanks, CWGuy.

FIDLAR Technologies seems to be the contractor behind this free service. (I sure wish they had a different name since this is also an acronym for “f…. it dog life’s a risk” (American punk rock band - look it up). Didn’t give me a warm and fuzzy.

That really doesn't fully solve the problem, the problem exists because so many counties and states make this information public. There are some counties and states that do not make it public. That is all they really have to do.

The reality is Home Title Lock is a scam of sorts. you are paying by putting your information in the public eye. Anything and everything CAN be hacked, including this service and home title lock. Once you give your information and someone grabs that database they now have reason to find your documents. It's not all that difficult for a hacker to do. Email addresses able to be traced, as well as anything in the digital domain. It's whether or not it's worth it to them. What better than a community of old people - sorry but old people are the #1 target for anything digital because they are viewed as incapable at being of the technical depth necessary to defend themselves.

Please make sure you read in full the disclaimer on the site.

It looks like this is only for Sumter county. Is there a similar service for Marion county?

Sumter and Lake counties have the service. The last time I checked, Marion County does not.

:icon_wink: YOU could contact the officials in Marion Co. and ask and if the answer is no, you could ask "Why not?"

Thanks you!

Lake County, FL also offers the same or similar service. Google “Clerk of Court, Lake County, FL.” Then choose Fraud Alerts.

Understood, but all your info is still available online. The paper deed is basically a "backup" to what is publicly available.
Not sure how good this service is but for the price you can't go wrong. :D The company handling this (Fidlar) seems to have been around for over 20 years.

Thanks Mr Guy.

:ho: You are very welcome. I don't care if others sign up or not. I put it out there when I found it. I was looking because the wife was wondering if we needed Home Title Lock or something like it.

I would be interested in knowing which states and counties make real estate records secret. One of the first things William of Orange did in 1066ad was to create a Doomsday Book memorializing the ownership of every property in England, Scotland and Wales. That system has been maintained ever since in Great Britain and America. Every time a piece of real property changes hands a prudent buyer has a title search of the county clerks real estate records to verify the ownership of the property. Imagine the chaos if those records were kept secret!

Can Hackers Take the Title to Your Home? - Deeds.com

Mrprez 03-12-2022 07:59 AM

None of these services prevent anything, even the ones you pay for. All they do is to notify you that there has been some type of activity concerning your deed. It is up to you to take action. There is no way to lock your title.

chuggmeister 03-12-2022 01:57 PM

One thing I’ve learned is this; if you sign up for anything “free” on the internet, it’s eventually gonna cost you. Free advice.

I find that most free advice is worth what you pay for it.

there is a difference between what you are talking about and what I am talking about. HUGE difference. you really think that when a title company does a title search they use google??? that's hilarious!!!
