Transportation to NH for medical reasons

I need to get my husband from TV back to family in NH for treatment at the Mass General Hospital. At the moment he is too sick to fly commercial flight.

If you have any ideas on how I can do this please let me know.

Amtrak maybe? Not quick or convenient but it can get you there.

oldtimes 03-17-2022 07:39 AM

There is also the bus. Greyhound is one.

blueash 03-17-2022 07:50 AM

if he is too ill for commercial air travel, and Mass General is your only acceptable choice, there are air ambulances you can charter. I don't know the cost but it will be in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Google private medical jet for options.

Another option [depending on how sick he is] is to hire a nurse to travel commercial with your husband.
HERE is a company that provides that service

Lastly, be sure to add into your deliberation the additional stress on his body of this long journey. Are you certain the additional advantage of MGH outweighs the disadvantage of the long trip. Only you can make that judgement.

Best wishes

davem4616 03-17-2022 08:59 AM

if he's too sick to fly, you might consider talking to his doctor to see if the treatment could be done in FL, and when he's better fly him up to NH. Tampa General Hospital is excellent

villagetinker 03-17-2022 09:15 AM

Yes, I would agree to see if there was suitable treatment locally, Shands, Mayo Clinic, etc., at least sufficient to get him to a point where he could fly. Hope this helps.

Madelaine Amee 03-17-2022 09:54 AM

My THANKS to everyone who wrote me to help. We have decided to ask his Hematologist to refer him to either Mayo or Shands and get his treatment transferred to his physician locally.

There are times when I wonder what I am doing on this chat line, then something like this happens and the nicest and most caring people in TV give wonderfully helpful solutions.

Bogie Shooter 03-17-2022 10:52 AM

Good Luck!

i've heard of this, but have no idea of the final costs. there are many companies that offer this service, perhaps shop around??

Try searching the internet for companies that offer air ambulance. Below is one I have heard of:

Angel MedFlight
https://www.angelmedflight.com/

Papa_lecki 03-17-2022 12:25 PM

It’s not going to help now, but I’ve had this air transport medical coverage for the family for years. When we travelled as a family, I never wanted to not be able to get me, wife or kids back. I don’t think it’s insurance, it’s a membership.
Never thought of it for this sort of situation.

It’s reasonably priced.

Hope he feels better soon.

If you don't find an option - message me. I'll drive him. Paying it forward...

JTLoehnert 03-18-2022 06:50 AM

There is MD Anderson in Jacksonville, it’s where I go for my treatments.

Hi Grace. Does your husband also offer transportation from The Villages to Orlando Airport? Thanks. Ellie

I am overwhelmed by the kindness and information I have received, you have all restored my faith in human nature.

We are hoping there is a doctor who can treat him at either Mayo or Shands. He has an extremely rare blood infection - his own blood kills his own red blood cells, only two people in 100,000 get this. I know there is help at Mass General, but it would be great to find a medical facility in our area that could treat his problem - I live in hope.

Sending you arms of support during this stressful time. Hopefully your NH doctor has a connection that will work for now in TV and perhaps some of your family can fly here to be supportive as you work through the details. That was a really great recommendation and yes there are so many good people here in TV. 💞

My sister in law had bleeding from a kidney with a large tumor and my brother in law used the car train to transport her so she could lay down. I know it goes to D.C but not sure if it goes further than that. Hope all goes well for you.

rcjc656 03-18-2022 08:53 AM

My husband became very Ill suddenly last year. I was able to get ambulance transport with an RN from Ocala to Philadelphia for $6500.00. We used Hurricane transport in Ocala. Prayers for you and your husband.

If you search Medical Transport Services on the computer, you will find companies that will “drive” you to New Hampshire (or elsewhere) in a customized Mercedes Benz customized transport vehicle. The vehicles include an extra driver allowing them to drive all night, some offer a nurse if needed, and include other options. You can call for price quote. While it is not cheap, it is much less expensive than the flying-ambulance services.

If it’s cancer related, consider Moffit! One of the top Cancer Care Centers in the country. It’s actually better qualified for cancer treatment than Shane’s or Mayo Clinic!

I was in a similar situation 12 years ago when we lived in the Naples area. My husband was too sick for a commercial flight. My stepson arranged for a small medical flight out of Page Field in Ft. Myers to fly us back to Philly where we had a hospital bed waiting. It's very expensive but we were blessed to have family to help us. God bless!

jjombrello 03-18-2022 09:41 AM

If his illness is cancer related, you might also consider Moffitt in Tampa.

Just FYI, my cousin became dreadfully ill in London. When he was stable enough he was flown home to Strong Memorial in Rochester NY. It cost $500,000.

Boomer 03-18-2022 10:16 AM

Madelaine,

We were in a situation like this with a family member 10 years ago and had checked on medical air transport— but then things changed, so it never happened.

I hope you will check on this possibility if you feel like getting back to the needed medical help, surrounded by family, would be the best thing to do.

I am not sure, but I think you would be able to fly with him and also there would be a medical person with you.

It is not inexpensive, but I hope you will look into it. They should be able to land and pick you up at Ocala or Leesburg.

I am so sorry you and yours are going through this.

Boomer

PS: I am sending you a PM.

jebartle 03-18-2022 12:13 PM

Wishing your husband a speedy recovery and sending both of you prayers.

Smalley 03-18-2022 12:59 PM

I think you made a wise decision. Shands is first class all the way! Best luck.

Angel Flight Southeast Home | Angel Flight SoutheastAngel Flight Southeast | Free flights when medical help is far away might be a solution. I was a pilot for Angle Flight based in Atlanta, Ga. Basically, the organization coordinates transport of people who can not fly on commercial airlines, but are well enough to ride in an airplane. The pilot donates their time and airplane to transport the individual. Angle Flight provides the coordination between the individual and one or more pilots depending upon the destination.

Keninches 03-18-2022 02:14 PM

We just spent 6 weeks at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. Top Notch. They have treated people from all over the World. Can’t say enough about their doctors and treatment. Good Luck

CJH929 03-18-2022 02:52 PM

Try Corporate Angel Network.(corporateangelnetwok.org).
Flights are free on corporate jets if they’re schedule can accommodate.

Curtisbwp 03-19-2022 03:32 PM

Have you considered the mayo clinic in Jacksonville FL? It's rating is higher than mass general. Mayo #1, cleavland clinic #2, mass general #3 in the nation.

There are companies that will pick someone up by stretcher and take them in a van cross country. I did it with my mom about 5 years ago because she couldn't sit cuz of a surgery. We traveled from Michigan to Florida and it wasn't extremely expensive.
