Obsession with fear

One of the things that seems to be repeated constantly in threads here is that people "worry" or "are afraid" of things, often as a result of misinformation.

I really don't get this. Are you all really afraid of everything?

And I don't worry about much of anything, and I am certainly afraid of even less. But, that doesn't mean I don't lock my car when I go shopping, that is not fear or worry, that is just caution.

Do you have home owners insurance? Do you WORRY about you house every day? Or is that just a reasonable precaution?

Do you wear seat belts, because you are afraid? and on and on...

I am actually very interested in how you all feel about this. Is it just a way to disrespect someone you disagree with, or do you really believe the only reason someone would disagree with your common sense is that they are afraid - terrorized!

Same old GrumpyOldMan. Different name. :1rotfl:

Didn’t you storm off vowing never to return?

Stu from NYC 03-27-2022 01:18 PM

My MIL was a big worrier worried about everything she ever encountered.

Long time ago realized that it was the things you never worried about that would bite you in the ___>

I chime into things sometimes for fun, sometimes because I might have an opinion. Being afraid, I don’t think so, face death and win leads to not being afraid of anything. My saying is if whatever people do or thinks doesn’t affect my getting out of bed in the morning then I really don’t care.

I worry about getting a lane to swim laps in the sports pools, getting the t-times we desire, how my golf swing will be from day to day, getting stuck behind slow pokes on the way to the pools/golf courses, and my wife or I getting injured by the many car/cart operators that should not be driving. However, what I worry about the most is having to go back up north and not have those things to worry about. Truly a first world problem!

a very famous man once said, "don't sweat the small stuff". and other than death it's all small stuff.

another once said, "sticks and stones..." this is aimed at all those yahoos who think being called a name is harmful...it's not.

Or, it causes you to spend a nice long "rest of your life" suffering at the expense of your dignity and your (and your family's) life savings.

No, I don't "worry about that" but the thought does creep into my brain once in a blue moon. I think about it, I fear it, I get past the fear, and then I go back to living my life.

There's nothing wrong with an occasional dose of fear about things. That's our mind's way of saying "you should probably give this a moment's thought." Like - if someone invites you to go spelunking, and you get to the cave and have a sudden flutter and your stomach feels like it's going to turn over - that's your body's way of saying "double check to make sure the flashlight works, your water skin is full, and the protein bar is securely waterproofed in the ziplock baggie you brought with you."

There are two things involving fear that deserve mention: irrational fears that don't go away, and those who try to shame people for having fears.

I try to avoid both. Neither of them will do me any good.

I was worried to death the baseball season was going to be cancelled.

But, since it's PLAY BALL time, I haven't a worry in the world. Everything is good

I assume you are referring to your signature, and if so, I totally and completely 100% agree with it. :)

I worry about the people who don't have the depth of knowledge, perspective, judgement, common sense or plain good thinking to know what to worry about and what to be afraid of (obviously I know)

Andyb 03-28-2022 06:15 AM

It’s what we are taught to do these days. Fear allows control.

Lovey2 03-28-2022 07:37 AM

Did it ever occur to you it's just a figure of speech and no one is actually sitting biting their nails or hiding under their beds??

Joe C. 03-28-2022 08:42 AM

I never worry about anything..... ever. Worrying is a waste of time. It is in itself, harmful -- both physically and mentally to the worrier.

I can be concerned about something, but that isn't the same as worrying. If I see a situation and can control it, then I plan and prepare for it. If I can't control it, then I ask myself "What's the worst that can happen"?

My great grandmother used to tell me to expect the worst and hope for the best.

My favorite saying which is a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche!

DaleDivine 03-28-2022 08:47 AM

I worry when playing golf, that my PROV1 is not going to make it over the water.
And I switch balls. I could do like some other golfer and hit a Villages range ball and if it doesn't make it, wait around a week for it to drift to the bank...:ohdear::ohdear:

I sometimes think I don't have a fear gene. I really am not paranoid about things, that said I am savvy about situations and keep myself out of danger.

Cancer didn't kill me, but it really messed me up! Don't think I'm stronger from it. The thought sounds good, but not true in every case, sadly.

😑

Velvet 03-28-2022 01:22 PM

The curse of the Lord is to be afraid of your own shadow.

Byte1 03-28-2022 01:54 PM

I'd say that the only thing I worry about (occasionally) is my daughter coming to live with me. Love her but can't live with her. I only worry about that when she threatens to move down here with us.

People who watch television are afraid of everything because they are told to be.
And who wouldn't believe these nice people in pretty suits on the BoobTube?
