Southern Oaks

Saturday, SO was in good shape.

The Hiway noise is always difficult to get us to.
The lack of trash cans............I don't understand.
Played 18 without seeing a sand provider.

Greens were rolling nicely.

:clap2:

Thanks for the review. For whatever reason, noise doesn’t bother me in the least, but I find movement extremely distracting and I have eagle eyes. Is the traffic on the turnpike visible from the course? Also, did the greens appear to be the same newer hybrid grass that were put in at Tierra and Lopez?

Papa_lecki 04-11-2022 09:00 AM

I payed it a few weeks ago. Enjoyed it.
Turnpike was definitely a factor (both noise and visually), but I think there will be improvements to hide the turnpike - either landscaping and/or walls.

Unlikely they will hide the course from Turnpike view.

Traffic.............maybe a handful of holes (right handed).

Not sure about the grass type, but the greens roll like Glenview.......but SO greens are better designed and constructed than Glenview.

Played Palmer this morning.................it's seen better days.

ureout 04-11-2022 12:41 PM

I agree ... we played Palmer twice the last few weeks but NO MORE .. fairways and greens were horrible.. will wait until summer and see if it improves I don't know why all the golf courses do not get on the same page as far as maintenance

Seeing the golf course from the turnpike is free advertising...

I go out of my way to bring guests up 466A, golf courses on both sides, its spectacular. I also think the HUGE bridge and the soon be 2nd one has some pretty nice ROI for advertising.

Bogie Shooter 04-11-2022 05:27 PM

Noise at SO, were the birds an issue? How about an airplane? Must you whisper "Fore"?
Peace and quiet..... :ohdear:

Rwirish 04-12-2022 04:56 AM

The traffic noise and view of the constant traffic is terrible.

One and done playing it.

No ambassadors riding up while you were trying to tee off? I would trade never having to see that for being refilled with sand every time. Sometimes I wish I could do an “I dream of Genie” and blink an ambassador into a cart girl with refreshments

zigzag 04-12-2022 06:43 AM

It's hard to imagine living in those houses along the back nine given the noise from the Turnpike. I've heard the plan is for the Turnpike to expand to three lanes each direction and when that happens the Turnpike will pay for sound walls so Developer has not put them in.
We have played SO since the week it opened and since they cut back the rough it's played easier. The greens have been consistently highly rated by our group. The starters and ambassadors are top notch and friendly. Amenities such as ball washers and trash cans are not on every hole, likely a small cost saving design. All in all my group rates it to be at the level of Glenview and Lopez.

I've never used them for sand, but that's about their only function any more, now that they are waterless.

Since they don’t push along slow golfers, I think their only real function is to keep people from sneaking on the course to play without paying. Especially later in the day when the courses typically aren’t very busy.

Calisport 04-12-2022 08:39 PM

Imagine the bexley bridge crossing the turnpike situation while on hole 11 next to the turnpike.

Dilligas 04-12-2022 10:50 PM

If traffic noise affects you, your concentration is terribly lacking. You probably let an airplane overhead annoy you. Yes if someone on the green is someone talking or moving you have an excuse, but 100 yards + away….you have a problem.

Thank you for your professional diagnosis.
Obviously you have never been to Augusta, or many other PGA venues.
Applause 100 yards away affect players.

Prima Donnas...

A buddy of mine prides himself on being able to "step on a duck" in the middle of your backswing... If you can play thru that, you can play thru anything...:clap2:

Bay Kid 04-13-2022 07:40 AM

The road noise will soon put you to sleep.

PaulUnderwood 04-13-2022 07:41 AM

As a former ambassador when your cart breaks down you will be glad there is one around.

This sounded suspect so I did some digging. The link shows the 5 year turnpike construction plan for central florida through 2027. Widening (to 4 lanes each direction) of the turnpike between 27 + 19 (4 miles) is on the books for 2026. That's all I see.

(The next to last page of the document has a helpful map)

How you could claim that a project not even in the planning stages includes sound walls is beyond me.

Maybe he heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who heard it from his butcher.

Funny you say that...............Monday @ Palmer there was an on-course tow and today @ Glenview there was an on-course tow.

Personally I have always thought noise such as people walking, waving, or talking, mowers, cars/trucks and other such distractions were overrated as far as me hitting a poor golf shot. Perhaps basketball and shooting free throws did something for me ignoring distractions on the golf course. But to each his own.

The answer is right in his post. "I've heard" is all some people need. They pass the story along to others, and it soon becomes "fact".

When my butcher passes along a story even if third hand we know it is true as he does not put his thumb on the scale. Not sure about his middle finger though

joelfmi 04-13-2022 06:19 PM

What do you use ear plugs to block the noise? I can just manage paying $10's of thousand to be live in a noisy community

joelfmi 04-13-2022 06:24 PM

Please that is very important ISSUE when a family buys a home. THAT IS A QUALITY-OF-LIFE ISSUE WHICH IS VERY BAD

So why spend a huge amount of money before checking out the property for all sorts of things include noise when it is near a turnpike?

Does anyone expect them to reroute the road due to someone not liking the noise?

Thanks for asking.

The comment was in response to a bonehead post about "If traffic noise affects you......you have a problem."

My foursome played Southern Oaks yesterday. It was my second time there. It is now my favorite course in the villages. Great fairways, wonderful and fast greens, great layout. I could care less about highway noise. I don’t think we ever did see an ambassador the whole round now that you mention it, But that also, is fine with me. I found a trashcan when I needed it. Again, if you don’t see a trashcan hold onto your trash until you do! I rate the course of nine out of 10.

Mind boggling.

dewilson58 05-24-2022 05:38 AM

Very Nice yesterday.

Greens were great.
The fairways & "roughs" have not been mowed for a couple days.
(don't tell anyone, they were perfect)

Couple fairways on the back 9 were roped off because of wet conditions.

Gator sleeping in the middle of 10 fairway.
(was not roped off)

Third group off.............played in less than 3 hours.
