Bermuda Grass / St. Augustine
Has anyone combined Bermuda seed with their St Augustine grass? I’ve been reading that it’s a great combination. Any thoughts or opinions on this? Looking to create a super thick lawn. Looking for serious opinions, and experiences. Thank you in advance

St Augustine grass should be mowed at 3 1/2 to 4 inches while Bermuda is mowed at 1-1 1/2 inches. Not sure how that's going to work out for you.

Bermuda has invaded my zoysia lawn……I would offer for free all the Bermuda you can dig up.

Bermuda is very invasive. Realize that if it gets into your flower beds it is very difficult to get it out.

My neighbors lawn guy did that and now realizes he made a mistake |
I wouldn't do it. There is a section of the grass along a walking train that has it mixed in and it looks terrible, the colors are not even the same. Your St. Augustine will look like it has a thin layer of unruly gray hair, it really does look terrible. You should have no trouble keeping you lawn thick and green it only needs food and water, very easy to maintain it.

Bermuda goes dormant and brown in winter. So does Zoisia go brown in winter.:popcorn::shocked: |

Be considerate of your neighbors also, I doubt that they would appreciate your bermuda grass encroaching their lawns Also, depending on what village you are in there are restrictions that do not allow changing the type of grass you have.
|
St Augustine is very thick when healthy. No need for a combination. Not sure but I thought I read you need arc approval to change the type of grass in your yard. Even if that’s not the case they might have a good answer to your question.

Probably not a good idea. Also, remember Bermuda doesn't do well in the shade.

Neither his question or my reply mentioned Zoisa Grass. Enjoy your popcorn! |

If, you introduce another type of grass, you will end up with different types of grass in different parts of your lawn, whichever does better with less water or more shade or.......will overpower some other variety. You will not end up with the mixed lawn some seem to hope for. Your neighbor. If, you introduce a different grass, it will not stay in, on your property. Essentially, planting weeds that will spread onto your neighbor's lawn. If, your lawn does not look well, truly simple, discover what you are doing wrong. Adding another problem, a new problem is likely not the solution. |

All you people throwing shade (no pun intended) on Bermuda grass but you hit your approach shots off of it and putt on it!

That’s what attracted me to
It! I’m on hold and giving the St Augustine a chance to revive itself .. sometimes it looks better when I leave it alone |
I have Bermuda invading my lawn and it is not pretty like a putting green. It sends out long runners which invade neighboring grasses as well as gardens. I asked my lawn care service if they could remove it and was told that once you have it about the only way to get rid of it would be to dig up the lawn and resod with whatever you want and then watch as the Bermuda remnants gradually reestablish.
And be aware of the fact that your lawn mowing service would be sharing your Bermuda with your neighbors who will be writing to TOTV with threads about "How did I get Bermuda grass invading my lawn and how can I get rid of it? |
