A little help with some PIE???

My wife is having a birthday and she isn't a cake person she's a pie person. Usually I would just go to a Baker's Square back home and get her a lemon supreme pie, but I have no idea where I can find something like that here. The pies at Publix are all pre-made and they are all fruit pies as in apple, cherry, etc... Does anyone have any recommendations for good pies in the area?

Thanks

go to Perkins for a good pie

Stu from NYC 05-03-2022 09:27 AM

Sams has excellent pecan pies.

What type are you looking for as most are fruit pies?

If you can find it Mrs Smiths frozen pies are outstanding.

GpaVader 05-03-2022 09:35 AM

It's called a Lemon Supreme and its different for a Meringue. It's looking like I might have to go for the Meringue, though....

You can check with Bob Evans and Fresh Market. Also call Miz Kathi`z Cafe in Wildwood. Good luck!!!

Get a recipe online, and make it yourself.
More Brownie points than getting something from a shop, and probably a lot healthier.
Done it loads of times, with cakes, pies, all sorts of stuff
Disasters are just as much appreciated as good results!

I think the Key Lime Pie King might be back. He sets up on Micro Racetrack Rd. But he is not there very often. His pies are very good, but he sells out fast.

If you Google “Key Lime Pie King The Villages” that should take you to more information. (There was an article about him, a while back, in that online newspaper with the name that cannot be typed here, for some reason. But here’s the code. You can break it by typing the following, like if you were hearing me say it: villageshyphennews.com

But the timing, and also the competition, to get one of his pies, before he runs out, make actually getting one totally dependent on luck.

As an alternative, if she likes ice cream, there is something you can easily make for her yourself. It has a little cake in it, but not like a traditional birthday cake.

(This takes very little time, and I think it is better than the ice cream cakes you can buy because you can choose exactly her favorite ice cream and sauce.)

Here is what you would need if you want to go that route:

A springform pan
A Sara Lee frozen pound cake
Favorite ice cream
Favorite ice cream sauce
A Heath Bar to smash into bits (but I think you can just buy the bits in a bag now, not sure.)

Do this:

Slice the pound cake into enough skinny slices to be two layers in the springform pan.

Start with a layer of the pound cake, then the ice cream, then the sauce, then the Heath Bar bits.

Then layer all that the same way again. (It’s like making lasagna, sort of.)

Make it far enough ahead, and make sure you have enough room in your freezer, to get a hard freeze, so it will come away from the springform nicely.

For a birthday, candles can work on the ice cream, I guess. But I use just one sparkler — looks good, and no counting necessary. (Blowing out candles at a party might never be a thing again — considering the past 2 years. But a sparkler’s fizzle-out can be a work-around.)

Geez, if you want really good key lime pie make your own. May friends and neighbors say this recipe is much better than that pie guy you reference.

Crust

11 graham cracker squares crushed fine
6 tablespoons melted butter
One third cup sugar
One quarter cup of lightly toasted shredded coconut

Blend the above and press into a pie plate and pop in a 350 degree oven for 7 or 8 minutes to firm up the crust. Then set aside while preparing the filling.

Filling

Three quarter cup key lime juice.
One and one half cans (14 oz size) sweet and condensed milk
Three egg yolks
Zest from one persian (common green lime)

Mix above with mixer till completely blended, smooth, and somewhat thickened (at least several minutes)

Pour the mixture in the graham cracker crust then bake in the 350 degree oven 15 to 18 minutes, (till filling firms up)

When pie has cooled to near room temperature pit in refrigerator for at least 3 hours to firm up before cutting. Add whip cream, serve and enjoy.

Sounds great but I don't own a mixer. That's also a LOT of butter for a single graham cracker pie crust.

I am so sorry I can’t help you, we are half way home to NH. I would have happily made you a lemon supreme pie! Last summer I started a fund raising project for our little church by selling pies- all kinds, sweet and savory. We sold more than 250 pies on Fridays throughout the summer, all homemade. (6 Tbsp butter is just right for a graham cracker crust😊). If you google “Lemon Supreme Pie” you’ll find lots of recipes and I bet you could make one by yourself! ( cheat and use a frozen pie crusts.) If you don’t have the right equipment, ask a neighbor. I’m surprised there are no bakers reading your post that couldn’t make you this pie, I would for sure and not charge you a penny. Anything you make will be much, much better than anything you buy from a store or restaurant. Good luck!
Yours in pies, Pam

The more butter the BETTER! Ever wonder what lime zest or lemon zest really does for a recipe? I know it’s grated peel but is it really necessary and can’t we just do without that step:popcorn:

Best pie in the area, although it's not cheap but it is made from scratch, is the sweetery on 301 in Wildwood. We bought the apple pie for an occasion and everyone thought we made it. Best pie I've had in a very long time, better than anything sold at Publix, perkins, sams, etc

go check them out, if you want to try the pie, the restaurant on the corner there does serve it.

Great pie at the Front Porch in Dunnellon! It’s an hour drive from my house in Poinciana village but totally worth the drive. It’s also a restaurant, so you can take your wife for a birthday meal too. Enjoy!

Try giving Publix a call and ask if they would make a lemon supreme pie. You never know, maybe they could do that for you. If not, someone else mentioned Perkins and they have great pies. Maybe they would be willing to make a lemon supreme pie just for your wife's special day.

GpaVader 05-04-2022 11:45 AM

Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas. This is a surprise party so making the pie really isn't an option. I ended up ordering one with Donna's Dream Cakes. The places either didn't make or didn't respond to my VM or messages on FB. I'll let you know how it goes.

Try Ambrosia in Sumter square. I have had the coconut cream and the triple berry.... both very good! Order a whole pie 48 hours in advance.

Key lime man will be there this Friday. He's not the original (he retired).
Pies are about $22 each and he will try to slip two pies in and charge $45.
Happened twice. Publix Key Lime pies are much better IMHO.
