Electric Lawn Mower

Anyone mow their lawn with electric lawn mower?

My neighbor is moving up north and wants to sell his 21" Kobalt self-propelled electric.

Cheers!

I would only consider it if it is cordless, and not more than a year or so old.

Papa_lecki 06-16-2022 04:38 PM

My father in law uses one. They dont last too long.

Are you currently mowing your lawn? Are you just thinking about mowing your lawn? Have you ever cut grass? There are plenty of people who have these pieces of junk . I see them taking an hour to cut their grass and then longer to putz around with a battery operated weed eater or edger. To me that is painful and a complete waste of my time. I have all gas equipment and blast through my lawn cutting , edging, trimming and blowing in 30 minutes or less. Cheers!

Tvflguy 06-16-2022 04:55 PM

I and all nearby neighbors here are using battery electric lawn equipment. No one has had issues. Efficient and quiet. Love them.

I’m not a “Greenie” but lawn equip and 2 cycle small engines are quite dirty.

I have 21” Kobalt 80V push mower, Kobalt trimmer and blower. Absolutely love them. Mower is 5 years old and working great. No “fussing” with batteries like someone stated. Just throw one in and go. You will definitely like the self propelled if you have Saint Augustine grass.

Agree! I have the same mower, trimmer, blower, and grass type.. Best investment! No need to keep gas cans in the garage.

JohnN 06-16-2022 06:01 PM

My daughter uses one at her place. She says it's fine for a smaller yard.
If a larger yard, I personally would use a gas mower.

Toymeister 06-16-2022 06:18 PM

Most brands, including kobalt, advertise deck size as mower size. Makita is an exception. A 21" mower has a 21" blade.

If you are shopping mowers I would get a Makita. They produce more tools that use their batteries than anyone else. More than DeWalt or Milwaukee.

FromDC 06-16-2022 06:36 PM

In the olden golden days.... have gas can filled for your lawn mowing days. Oh, make sure you have enough oil/gas mix for your accessories, because each accessory is different. Is it 2/1 mix or 3/1 mix? If you are happy with that decision making process on mowing day then go with it. Or, battery is the way to go.

rjm1cc 06-16-2022 06:40 PM

I used one up North. I liked it very much. If I was mowing down here I would use a cordless electric. Check the availability of a replacement battery and cost.

The Kobalt he is selling is a 40 volt self propelled 21 inch.
It's only a year old and he wants $125.00 for it.
He paid $429.95 from Home Depot.

You'll regret a push mower, especially when the "feels like" temps are in the 100's like today and the humidity is like a sponge. You'll likely also likely regret ANY kind of mower after a while. :D I mowed my own with a top of the line Honda mower some guy sold me for $150. It cost him $700 (showed me the receipt) 15 months earlier. I happily mowed my own lawn for the first 2 years I was here (I actually enjoyed it except our small property is one BIG HILL) then I happily sold the mower and even more happily had someone else do it for me. Yes, they don't do the greatest job but when they leave I follow with my own string trimmer. :)

Woodbear 06-17-2022 01:23 AM

I have a Makita mower (manually driven), Makita blower and Makita string trimmer. These are all 18 volt series systems. I am very impressed with the quality. I get 3-4 cuttings before having to charge the batteries on the mower. I have so many batteries, that I never have to wait for a charged one.

For what it is worth, we also have a Makita stick broom that runs off the same battery system as all the garden equipment. 1 year in, we are happy with our choices.

You are todays problem with your attitude on electric tools. The environment is much more important than you are.

Kobalt is a Lowes brand, not Home Depot. Home Depot sells Ryobi

yourjoy 06-17-2022 05:41 AM

I have a battery mower. I enjoy mowing my own grass. I pay to have it mowed from April until October. It’s just too hot for me to mow it during those months. The rest of the year, it’s good exercise and a feeling of accomplishment.

maggie1 06-17-2022 05:52 AM

Huh?

Not sure where you're going with your statement, but I see that battery or electric-powered lawn equipment is a heck of a lot better than gas-powered. Of course, the better option would be a goat, but then storage for the billy might be a problem.

Sold my gas Honda mower and bought an EGO mower, trimmer and edger. It’s many pounds lighter and quieter. Cuts our St. Augustine grass beautifully. Love ‘em!

If in good shape I would buy it. I have the same mower to do the lawns at my home and my mother in laws house down the street. Used 2-3 times a week for the past 4+ years. Had to get a new set of batteries after 3 years. The replacement batteries will cost you more than your neighbors asking price.

JTLoehnert 06-17-2022 06:12 AM

For $125 I don’t think you can go wrong. Consumer reports rates the EGo as the top rated. I’ve had an electric mower for 4 years and have never had the first problem.

100% wrong.

Cheap ones don’t last long. My EGO equipment still works perfectly.

EGO is the best cordless lawn equipment available. I have the mower, trimmer and blower and it works flawlessly.

Tom&JenC 06-17-2022 06:18 AM

$125??? buy it or I will....haha
I'm going for the EGO self propelled. I really want the Milwaukee electric mower since I have been buying their series of tools for a while now but its over $1000

I've been using electric mowers for 10 years and I'm not a Treehugger.
I had an acre lot at our past location, I started out using my 80v Kobalt to mow around the home and a gas riding for the larger area; well the riding mower engine went out, and for the rest of the season 3+ months (Texas) I used that 80v Kobalt mower to mow the whole acre lot, I had two batteries.
Next Season, I purchase an electric riding mower rated at 2 acres.
Currently, here in TV, my small lot is so easy to do; all of my lawn tools are electric, using the same battery type. Having a Mower, Blower, Hedge Trimmer, Weed wacker and Edger I use two batteries to alternate to each tool as necessary.

Ask him to let you use it on your lawn …. Do the entire lawn to make sure the battery is sufficient to do the job and then , once you catch your breath, change your sweat drenched clothing and finish a cold beer , then you can decide if it’s worth it !! ;)

Our yard guy died a little over a year ago now and I decided to do the lawn care myself. Bought a Kobalt corded electric mower, corded electric weed whacker/edger and a corded electric hedge trimmer--decided on corded rather than battery because my grandson has all battery-powered stuff and says his mower lacks power in heavy grass. My lawn looks better than most of the professionally-maintained lawns in our area.

Corded isn't as bad as it sounds. I have a 75' heavy-duty power cord and can easily reach every part of my yard by plugging it in the outside outlets. dragging the cord was a hassle at times until I learned a few simple tricks, such as starting close to the outlet and gradually moving farther away. Same with the hedge trimmer and weedwhacker.

I figure that the equipment paid for itself in ten months, at the rate I was paying my yard guy. Besides, I like the exercise.

The EV cars are just as bad or worse but you know the ones that have them aren’t going to say anything bad about them since they paid thousands of dollars on one. I’m telling you they’ll end up costing you a lot more in the end than they’re telling you but if you want one don’t buy a cheap 50 or $60,000. one buy the best & most expensive on the market!

EatthMama 06-17-2022 08:17 AM

It’s what I use

I have that mower. Also have the Kobalt weed whacker and blower. I have an unusually large yard for a courtyard villa. I haven’t had any problems at all with it (2 years now since I bought them). I love not having to maintain gas equipment, and my garage doesn’t smell like gas and oil.
All that said, make sure the mower is self-propelled. I can’t imagine having to push through St. Augustine without it. Best of luck.

It sounds like a good deal, if you want to cut grass.

kendi 06-17-2022 09:01 AM

We have been using the battery powered Kobalt for two years now with no problems. Easily moves through and nicely cuts the St Augustine grass.

TrapX 06-17-2022 10:24 AM

Ask your neighbor if you can use it one time to cut your lawn. See how well it works for you. Does it make it through the entire yard without the battery running out? Is a second battery and charger included?
Does it cut the height you need? St Augustine is cut at 3.5 to 4 inch. Many mowers cannot get that high.
Is the battery a lithium? Nicad = hard pass. NiMH = I would hesitate a lot on it, even at that price.
You might also need to sharpen the blade if it hasn't been done recently. Or swap for a new one.

Debset 06-17-2022 01:03 PM

I bought at Kobalt 40 volt at Lowes for $350 about 6 months ago. Easy to use!! Battery never been an issue.

Well, all my neighbors pay to have their lawns mowed, and walk around the neighborhood for exercise.

I tell them why not put a lawn mower in front of you and save $$$$ and get exercise all in one. :duck:

Michael G. 06-17-2022 01:53 PM

On a side note.
I was out in Weirsdale mower store and on the floor they have a all electric riding mower, (the kind they use in TV) 0-turn radius, 54" deck, lithium battery for $19,8898.00.
They said they a lot of them...........
