A Native Floridians visceral reaction to the Villages

So, I'm shooting a pistol match in New Hampshire this weekend and one of the guys in my squad is from Florida. He's about 75 and does the reverse snowbird thing now that he's retired. July and August in New England. He's got a 20 acre horse farm somewhere near Gainesville.

We're talking about gun clubs in Florida and the second I mention that I rented a place in The Villages and will be doing it again next year he got very animated and listed 3 things about the Villages that he was sure were true about what goes on in The Villages. Even though he's never been to The Villages.

2 of the things I'd heard before and were related but the third was something new to me.

Any guesses on what the 3 things were?

JMintzer 07-10-2022 07:01 PM

Why would we villages care about someone opinion that has never been here. I heard lots of things about northeast. But I never been there so I don’t care.

I am a native Floridian, born in Pompano, raised until I was 18 in Ft. Lauderdale.

I expect it had more to do with the person than to do with being a native Floridian.

Excellent point. For some reason certain individuals ignorantly repeat these ridiculous falsehoods. My own grandsons brought this up to me one time and I informed them that these are ridiculous falsehoods perpetrated by some young people who suffer from ageism and dislike to see older people enjoying life. When they came to visit they saw the true Villages. 98% of the residents are lights out by 9:30 PM. Hardly a soul is out past 10PM.

I am ALL for people believing all things negative about The Villages. I hope they think there is a phenomenally high rate of STDs and loofah/key parties, etc. I hope they are dissuaded from coming here or looking into it. Then maybe the building will slow down a little bit and the mass numbers coming down will slow as well.

It's like my summer home, Tennessee, I make sure everyone knows ALL about the bugs and the humidity. We have enough people there as it is.

Decadeofdave 07-11-2022 11:03 AM

Yeah, I hear this all the time from people that have never been here. I just laugh because there is no way to describe the place. Unparalleled.

Djean1981 07-11-2022 12:32 PM

To shut him up ask him how he got his gun from Florida to New Hampshire LEGALLY.

We had that discussion. He's not but he's sure he will be able to talk his way out of trouble if he has to. Something about needing to put down a horse if he has an accident with his trailer.

I told him I'd keep bail money handy.

I got my non-resident permit in Pennsylvania so I'll be legal when I stop there on the drive down 81. The next stop is a constitutional carry state at a friends house and I now have my Florida non-resident permit so I'll be legal in Fla.

Biggest problem state is NY but that's only 60 miles of road and not near NYC where they ignore the federal law allowing firearms transporting as long as they are unloaded and locked in a trunk.

In many years in the Villages haven’t seen or heard about number one or two on the list despite the non stop national media hit job stories. As far as number three on the list, occasionally see or smell people partaking. That being said, weed use in the Villages is minuscule compared to up north, where recreational is legal in many states. We have attended a couple outdoor concerts up north this summer where it seems like at least half the attendees are lighting up. Never hear about that in the national media.

Probably either in the trunk of his car, or in a checked bag in the belly of an airplane...

It's NYC that's the problem, not the rest of the State...

No need for a carry permit for interstate travel with a gun, as long as you follow the Federal guidelines...

Now, if you want to conceal carry the entire way, that's another can of worms...

The key word in that statement is travel.

Plan to stop at a hotel during your "travel"? Federal guidelines don't cover that.

Yes they do. They consider your hotel room your "residence"...

Now, hotel chains may have their own rules and certain states have their own rules on loaded firearms at home, so you should be familiar with those rules...

People posting nonsense is pretty typical anywhere on the internet but it's not often that the nonsense could get you thrown in jail if you were to believe it to be true.

This is one of those cases.

The federal law on interstate transport of firearms makes no mention of hotels or residences.

In addition you need to be traveling from a state where you are legally allowed to possess the firearm to another state where you are legally allowed to posses the firearm.

COSTCO, Sam's Club and TraderJoe's all coming to TV?

There is an evil reason that msm and social media will say false bad things about the Villages.

If you consider overpopulated, overtaxed, crappy roads, grumpy rude people, bankrupt states with extremely high taxes awesome you are in the right place so please stay in the north forever

Spending the summer in New England, isn't the "reverse snowbird thing".... it's the snowbird thing.

That's true of most non constitutional carry states you aren't licensed in. It's for sure true of Massachusetts.

A good lawyer would advise you to not even stop for gas if you can avoid it in those states.
