Disposal of motor oil.
 

Hi all, can someone advise how to dispose of motor oil? Thanks.

Walmart will take used oil in the automotive dept.

Any auto parts store that sells oil

Nope, most will tell you to dispose of it at Walmart

Mostly Walmart, some service centers.

Put it in your tiki torch.

Autozone, Advanced Autoparts, NAPA, O’Reilly, etc...

What auto parts store sent you to Walmart?

Autozone takes used oil. At least they did 3 months ago when I disposed of my used cart and vehicle used oil.

Never had auto parts store tell me that. They sell used oil.

Never had a problem with any auto parts store. If they sell it they will take it. I use O’Reilly’s on 301 in WILDWOOD. Never had a problem.

Well, they burn your trash, petroleum based plastic included.

That's a first for me.

It's part of their corporate environmental responsibility to recycle but they do allow exceptions.

So forewarned, I wouldn't buy oil anyplace that will not accept the used oil back.

Took mine to Advanced across the street from Walmart on 466 a couple of weeks ago.

Yep. It all gets incinerated like me some day. Hopefully not before next trash day!

2 pages of basically the same response except those who want to burn it or contaminate the soil around their house. All the auto stores that sell oil will dispose of it for you, including Walmart. Should be the last post on this subject I hope.

Putting it into waste pickup for trash to energy risks leakage to the environment when the truck compacts the load.

Autozone on corner of 44 and 301.

Take it to Auto Zone, Advance Auto or O’Reilly’s, they’ll take it. I change my engine oil & that’s who takes oil!

You’re wrong Michael, I change my own car engine oil ALWAYS & auto supply store do & still take oil. Sorry Michael!

I've wondered about this too....is it actually OK to put stuff like old oil, paint thinner, and the like in the trash? I mean...since it's being incinerated anyway it should be OK shouldn't it?

Why not? The dump/transfer station we use up north takes used motor oil. They have an oil burning heater they use to heat the building they operate out of. They only ask that you don’t mix gas or hydraulic oil with the motor oil because it will mess with their oil burning heater.

Not a good idea, when the truck compacts the trash, the container will be crushed and the oil can leak onto the street.

Hmmm...OK we don't have a consensus yet on oil in the garbage, rats.

the next nonsensible answer I heard was someone we all know was driving in his car and oil got on his windshield, and he got cancer from it, you can't make this up.

What container do you use to bring the used oil to Walmart or Auto Parts Store?

The same container the oil comes in, but I use 5 Quart Jugs.

Big empty Landry soap container (labeled used motor oil) if I buy it by quarts. But, usually just get 5 quart container it came in after I saved extra one. my car only takes 4.3 quarts and that’s with the commercial filter not the dinky factory one. So extra motor oil container Where I put left overs in.
