Favorite Robert Mitchum movie?

Robert Mitchum - Rotten Tomatoes

He played a lot of dark as well as some very light characters.

I really enjoyed this one-- Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison - Rotten Tomatoes

Off the top of my head cannot think of any but did like him as an actor

Kahuna32162 08-06-2022 02:52 PM

Cape Fear 1961, just watched it last night.

Boomer 08-06-2022 03:24 PM

Cape Fear scared the hellouta me.

Tal, as soon as I saw the title of your post, I had a flashback……..

……..1960-something

……..at the drive-in………

………in his dad’s Buick…….

…….CAPE FEAR!

…….Mitchum creeping around in the night…….

…….I was terrified, petrified…….

…….That shoulda taught me to never watch the movie at the drive-in. ;)

Boomer

PS: Never wanted to see the re-make

That is not just my favorite Mitchum movie, but one of my favorites all time.

Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison.

Although, The Night of the Hunter will give you the willies.

My favorite is the classic war movie "The Enemy Below" where is the Captain of a US Destroyer Escort in WWII hunting a German sub.

walterray1 08-06-2022 06:51 PM

El Dorado was a favorite even if it was not his best film performance. He was a great actor and caught your attention when he was on the screen. Another example of breaking the mold.

That was a very good one.

Cape Fear (1962) Even though Di Niro's 1991 Max Cady was excellent Mitchum's broke the mold.

Blackbird45 08-07-2022 04:21 AM

Not a big fan of his movies

I was never a big fan of his movies, but I did get to work with him and to his fans, he was really a nice and fun person.

i agree. This movie actually is sort a prequel to the cuban missile crisis where a russian submarine captain wanted to launch a nuclear torpedo at the usn destroyers hounding the sub. WW3 was a lot closer than we knew at the time
anyone liking this movie should watch the bedford incident with richard widmark and sidney potier. A cold war classic.

Not a movie but a 1980s miniseries "The Winds of War" is my favorite.

l2ridehd 08-07-2022 08:06 AM

Thunder Road was his best. I think Cape Fear was next and then many of his war movies.

Cape Fear is a good choice, but if you have not seen NIght of the Hunter, you are really missing something. Mitchum's best performance.

I was doing some YouTube surfing this morning about 2:00 AM or so and ran across The Enemy Below. I'd never seen it before that. Great movie, no real bad guys.

Any fan of Star Trek TOS will instantly recognize the plot: it mirrored the Season One episode "Balance of Terror" almost perfectly, even to the enemy Captain's friend being killed.

Gone with the Wind.

He was in a movie I saw long ago, and would like to see again - “Mr. Moses” was the title, I think. I don’t remember how good it was, but I would like to see it again to check it out.
