Sherwin Williams Paint?
 

Hi all,

I've seen a lot of posts about Sherwin-Williams paint. I've grown up with Benjamin Moore and that was always the "goto" brand. Is Sherwin-Williams just more accessible in TV? Is it formulated better for warmer climates?

We gave up on them. They have blending problems and all folks are going to ( including us ) to Home Depot. Best of luck!

We tried to get the $ 5.00 small samples and were told due to a plant fire, they were low on polymers and only sell 1 gallon amounts. This is from the SW dealer in Lake Sumpter Landing. Did not make sense to us but went to Home Depot and they confirmed as did our contractor. HD is very busy with contractors who cannot get SW paint and are switching to HD. We had the entire interior painted with HD (many colors) and had outstanding results. All paint work was done May 2022. Good luck with your project.

Benjamin Moore is probably better paint but Sherwin Williams is very good quality. Be aware they have different levels of quality of paint at different price points and a contractor grade that I assume is more economical-when my painter told me to pick paint, I chose Sherwin Williams' top quality but he used the contractor grade. Not sure if it will make a difference in the long run but was surprised when I saw the cans weren't the Emerald line of paint.

My brother is a painting contractor, all he uses is Sherwin Williams products, none of his customers complain about the results.

All paint brands have budget quality (junk) paints, and good quality paints. If I am going to spend the time and effort to paint, the cost of the paint is only a small part of the job. I have excellent results with Sherwin Williams better quality paints.

Investment Painting has been using Sherwin Williams Paint since the company was founded in 1966. My father used it before me. Most pros don't have all morning to get their paint mixed. I have noticed that the electrical expert, who was previously the flooring expert, is working in paint department today because the paint expert didn't show up. Behr paint is a good brand, but as always, they make different qualities. We can call Sherwin Williams and have our paint mixed and ready to go without waiting. IPC only uses top quality paint, because it's easier to work with. Remember Quality paint is easier to apply and last longer. In the long run you save on labor and earn a repeat customer. Len

Up North, Benjamin Moore was the go-to paint. I painted the interior of our house so often the rooms were getting smaller.

Fast forward to Florida, Sherwin Williams is the Gold Standard. It is about equal to Benjamin Moore in my opinion. I painted one room and have given up the brush to the professionals. Nucky's Painting is out of business.

Benjamin Moore and Pratt & Lambert always fought it out for the best paint as rated by Consumer Reports in the 80's - 90's. It was not till Sherwin William bought Pratt & Lambert in 1996 that a once great brand began to fade. Behr was smart enough to bring on a bunch of the old Pratt & Lambert lab people to grow their paint products group. Their development work ultimately helped Behr to win the coveted paint contract for Home Depot.

For the average consumer, you will never know what is truly in your paint can. It is very common for companies to charge exorbitant amounts for only a slight modification to their formulations. Having worked with and formulated paint and coatings I personally would never pay for anyones top of the line product. Most manufacturers B+ products will do everything a person needs without the additional cost of the A+ product.

Inside paint will last practically forever whenever the brand or cost. Outside paint will eventually fade from either the Sun or your water sprinklers hitting your house probably an 8 or 10 years. The cost of the labor is three or four times the cost of the paint so for an extra $100 you can get a better paint and maybe get a few extra years without repainting. So on a $2,000 job you can spend maybe a few hundred bucks more and know you're getting a better paint. Of course if you're planning on flipping your home in 3 years it just doesn't matter

Sherwin Williams is the best for outdoor paint for houses. Ben Moore has better indoor colors and is the go-to paint for interior decorators.

You can get Benjamin Moore Paint at Sparr Building and Farm Supply on 44 just across Brownwood. If it’s what you have always liked why change.

I used Benjamin Moore to paint my entire interior of my house. I went to Ace Hardware in Wildwood and am very happy with the results.

Good post. I would say the best paint I ever used was Pratt & Lambert. It’s a shame they are no longer in business.

I used to use only big box store paints then switched Behr paint. Then I found it to almost be too thick so I switched to Benjamin Moore then ended up switching to Sherwin Williams and have not looked back since. Best bang for your buck.

You can get Benjamin Moore at Ace Hardware. I saw an advertisement. I have used SW for years and have had excellent results.

I painted the interior of my house with Ben Moore, and the exterior with SW. Why? SW had a color I liked better for the exterior. Both are top of the line paints. They should be for what they cost!

We just painted our home interior with SW Emerald line of paint, in matte finish. The results were excellent, and I really like that paint. True one coat coverage. Many years ago, I gave Behr paint a try on a room in a previous home, and was very disappointed with the results. FWIW, we had a very good experience at the SW store at Lake Sumter. They had the small sample containers (we bought 3 of them), and they have very helpful employees.

I was a painting contractor for a while and used Sherwin Williams top line. I never had any problems or complaints. I believe Sparr farm store on 44 across from Brownwood sells Benjamin Moore paints

We have used Benjamin Moore paints for at least 30 years up north. Check with Ace Hardware in Wildwood - I’ll bet they carry it.

Spend Your Time Choosing a Contractor and Color
 

There are few differences between SW, BM, and Behr. Consumer Reports gives the nod to Behr, primarily due to it having a small price advantage.

If you're doing the work yourself, buy from the store most convenient to you, as, invariably, you will be making several trips during the course of the project.

The other major brand, available locally, in addition to SW, BM, and Behr, is Florida Paint. It is the source for the white paint, known as" Village White", which was, originally, applied on the ceilings of most, if not all, our homes.

If you're using a contractor, you should only worry about choosing the contractor and the color. Let the contractor choose the brand and the paint store. He will have a relationship with a particular store and will receive the best service. If something goes wrong, he will have the purchasing power to get the problem resolved with the store and the manufacturer. The contractor will buy thousands of gallons of paint in a year while you will buy twenty five every eight or nine years.

Over the years, I have used both SW and BM paints. Mostly BM because their paint store was just around the corner. But both are excellent paints. I think that the only difference would be in the colors. I'd recommend getting color swatches from both manufacturers and take them home and view them in your home lighting (it will be different from what you see in the store). Then pick out the colors you want and buy the paint.
One thing I personally stay away from is the paint/primer in the same can.

Florida Paints is located on 466. They have formulas for the colors used on houses in The Villages. If the paint used on your house was purchased through them you will find the formula written on the cover of each paint can that was left over. The painter also dabbed a sample of the color on the lid so you do not have to open the can to look. As a homeowner in the villages you get a 20% discount.

Sherwin Williams is a far better paint. This is well-known.

Since I cannot get Dunn-Edwards anymore (THE professional preferred paint on the west coast), and besides - the AQMD has regulated all California paint down to being little more than pigmented water, I now go with SW.

An old buddy at work had previously worked 15 years at SW. Said it was the best. They even use an electro-static paint formulation of SW to paint and paint and repaint the Golden Gate Bridge.

My view. We had our home exterior painted just over a year ago with Sherwin Williams. We have no way to compare one paint to the other. Paint half your home each side for same sun, etc. As stated our home was painted with Sherwin Williams it leveled great, covered great. A BIG variable is who does the application, THE PREP. We used James Rockholt, Rocky's Painting 603 391-6658.
A friend and neighbor used another painter, I did not ask the cost. They spilled paint onto his grass, splattered paint on several shrubs and way over estimated the required amount of paint. He has a five gallon plastic container with four gallons still in it. At todays prices of like $50-$60 a gallon that is $250-$300.
A favorite paint? They have all needed to be modified due to the EPA. Oil paints are gone. Latex paints are vastly improved from what they were.

Most builders use Sherwin Williams. Good quality.

Most major paint manufacturers, including SW and BM have different levels of paint. Generally, the higher the price the better quality, that is ease of application, coverage (1 vs 2 or more coats), durability, etc. Generally you get what you pay for.

I ran a paint supply store, there are only several manufacturers and many labels put on those containers.

Last I checked Consumer report, Behr from the Home Depot held the top five spots.

I believe price was their benchmark. We have done painting for all our homes so many times I’ve lost count. Behr paint works, Benjamin Moore was my least favorite at over $75. a gallon, although, color was good but the better grades of Sherwin Williams win, hands down.

Pratt & Lambert is still around and available in Florida. Pratt & Lambert Paints - Never Compromise Paint Colors & Quality Products You do not hear much about Pratt & Lambert as it is tough for Sherwin Williams to promote an internal brand that would compete with its own flagship products.

I moved here 5 years ago and I've only done touchup at this point. I called The Villages they gave me a couple numbers I took them to the Florida Paints you mentioned(it's right next to Southern Trace Plaza) and volla, the colors matched! I couldn't believe it.

I used to use Behr, but when they started to mix primer directly into their paints, I stopped. I found it impossible to store. The paint hardened if I didn't use it right away.

Consumer Report is complimentary and online with Sumter County Library membership. I am happy with their recommendation for Behr paint.
