Advice of moving furniture, Boston MA area to TV

We plan to move only some of our furniture to TV. Seeking advice on movers.

rjm1cc 09-26-2022 12:11 PM

consider pods

retiredguy123 09-26-2022 12:50 PM

You will probably pay more to move it than it is worth.

asianthree 09-26-2022 01:01 PM

Don’t listen to those who tell you not to bring furniture. We used a pod, this month, which will sit in storage until our house is built. Under $4,000 for the move. Went furniture shopping last week, not only didn’t like anything, plus not the beautiful pecan wood we have. Plus a headboard, dresser, one nightstand, $7200. Plus 2 of the 3 pieces not available until March. Supply chain still not recovered

Can get free bids and ratings on Uship. There is a fellow who goes from Here to Boston and back weekly. Should find him on the site

I guess it depends on how expensive your taste in furniture is.

We used a mover from Franklin, MA. The large companies do multiply households at the same time to help reduce the cost.

LuvNH 09-26-2022 02:41 PM

Used a pod and their recommended packers. Excellent experience. Great company to deal with, excellent packing and no damage to anything. I have antiques and everything arrived in super condition.

MikeVillages 09-26-2022 03:35 PM

We dont plan too many things.
My wife called and apparently we would had to load & unload the pod. It that true.

Stu from NYC 09-26-2022 03:36 PM

We got rid of a ton of stuff but still took a lot of furniture we enjoyed.

Used a mover that moved total of 3 families and was a worthwhile investment.

There are different POD providers out there.
Some provide labor.
There is labor down here in TV.

Most movers broker loads and you have no idea who is handling your assets.
Be very careful and confirm they will not broker.

Good Luck.

We received 3 companies to call to load. Once you get to TV there are lots of unloading options. Although we loaded ourselves, with grandkids help. Bonus I know exactly what boxes I want unloaded first. Furniture wise we brought our buffet, and 1 bedroom set. Everything else was just boxes. You chose how long to pack, then our pod delivered to Ocala Pod storage.

Actually even the national company kind of plays a game.

We used Allied and they put the move out to bid with their drivers.

Got a good driver and in Va put out a bid for a couple of laborers to help load his truck and that went well.

Did the same here and as it turns out some damage was done and the laborers hid it and going thru the process of filing a claim and accepting depreciation on the table that was damaged made it not worth the effort.

Many do use pods to move things. Some end up buying new as the stuff they bring down isn’t the southern style. Big dark furniture from the north is overwhelming in Florida. We bought all new furniture when we came because we still have our house up north. We paid about $7000 for bedroom, den, living room and dining room. This was just before Covid so prices were still normal.

bowlingal 09-27-2022 04:35 AM

I used Liberty to move from Long Island. At that time, all boxes were free. It was much cheaper than a pod, and they packed and unpacked. If you use a pod and you go over the time by 1 day, you pay for the whole month. Also, remember you get an estimate for the move, not actual weight by the moving company. I had the truck weighed before my stuff was loaded and after my stuff was loaded, so I paid actual weight....saved about $600 from the estimate. The company will tell you where the weigh station is located and take the truck there and you can watch. Mine was about 20 min from my house....well worth it

I’ve used Patrick Wyatt with Here to There Moving several times. He’s a young guy with a great crew and very reliable. His dad is a realtor here in the villages. They travel to move people to the villages. Give him a call, I’m sure he can sort you out. Good luck with your move!

don't do it. I made same mistake. moving prices were bait and switch, they stole a lot of my things, were very late getting down to TV.

fritzgb1 09-27-2022 07:08 AM

when we moved here about a year and a half ago we moved everything. I rent a 26' truck from Penske which I drove. But I hired a crew to load and unload at both ends. Very reasonable and both crew were great.

Hankofthedesert 09-27-2022 07:41 AM

choose the furniture you want to move wisely and my suggest is "POD". you can pack it container as you see fit and the big advantage to me was they picked it up, stored it until I was into my home here.

nancyre 09-27-2022 08:19 AM

Check to see if there is a local Moving company that makes weekly runs to FL. We used a local White Plains NY mover, they split the load between us and a couple of others.

I used JK Moving Company for both packing and moving when I came to The Villages last May. They are well-known in the Northeast. I had a lot of broken and missing items. The missing items were mostly tools. Sorry I hired them. Wish I had gotten a pod instead. Good luck with your move.

Take very few pieces if any - get a large pod and buy new down here - that is what we did and even the few we brought lasted about a year!

If they do a pod do not pay the high price they charge for storage - there is a storage unit place in Wildwood called A/C STORAGE - every unit is a/c and you can have pod delivered there and unload it yourself - we hired locals to do the unloading- good luck.

MikeVillages 09-27-2022 10:27 AM

For PODs, do you pay by the POD size & distance or do they also add the weight?

We used a pod and shipped it and then hired movers for the day after it was delivered to live it all in! Easy as could be!

Weight isn't a factor, so no impact on cost. I got a quote about four months ago for Northern Virginia to TV and was in the neighborhood of $3600. I just updated it since we close in a few weeks and it is now $5400. I may be off a little on the numbers, but there is a ~$300 drop off fee, roughly $4400 transport fee, pick up of the pod was free, and the rest was mandatory minimum insurance, taxes, etc. We factored in two days to load the POD and one day to unload. There is no storage in that quote. Note that was for one POD!

We're revamping our strategy and using just one POD for furniture. We have tons of boxes, but will be cheaper to get them down via another mechanism besides a mover or PODs.

Barborv 09-27-2022 03:20 PM

As I'm reading this, My POD is in transit. I first priced UPAK which was cheaper, but their rates are for one week. So, you have to load within one or two days and when it's delivered, you have a day or so to unload, I believe. If you're having someone load it, that might work for you. For us it wasn't. We needed the full month. Two and a half weeks to load because my husband was doing it and I packed daily. I also purchased through pods their lock for $15. It was interesting watching how the pod is placed on your driveway. It lifts straight down and steady. We will be coming down to TV this weekend to unload.
There are people within the Villages that will unload for you if you physically can't.
As far as you bringing your furniture, that is totally your choice. We didn't. Only our backyard stuff. We wanted new and my daughter just bought a house and is taking almost everything! So, I feel really good about that.
I do have to say though, I did pack a lot of stuff I know I shouldn't have, but I can't part from things. LOL. So, I'll see what I want to display and then try selling at a garage sale or through our TV websites. I'm sure whatever you decide, it will be the right decision for you! Good luck

jxm473 09-27-2022 04:06 PM

I moved from NY to The Villages. I was very happy I brought all my furniture, even though I recently purchased new couches for my living room. I didn't need to rush and found exactly what I wanted.
Used Colonial Van Lines and that was a huge mistake.
If I had to do it again, I would use Pods.

They refused to allow a pod delivered, even for a 48hour turn around, New owners, not easy to work with, plus their storage rate is the same as Pods

Always Faithful Moving Company

We were very happy and used Always Faithful Moving Company. They are a smaller moving company in Florida. They moved us from Illinois to The Villages. They moved my sister from PA to an hour from here. They have moved my brother a few times. We didn’t have any damage. We were really glad we brought our furniture. Other people we know ended up waiting 5-6 months for new furniture to be delivered. The movers were careful getting the furniture out and in our houses. They were patient and I didn’t feel rushed. It was the best move we had out of the 17 times we moved. We were a military family. The owner was in the military, too. The owner is Steve

If you have help on either end to load and unload - the cheapest way is a Home Depot box truck rental- per day 6 days roughly 900 plus gas 500 to NY- rent in Florida drive up and bring back to same store - I did not want to trust any company with my Steinway piano…..

Lindamal 09-28-2022 07:53 AM

ABF Trailer

We used ABF from Vegas, they dropped off a 27 ft trailer at the house. You can load (3 days) call release the load for transport and they pick up and deliver to your new address. You are charged for the linear footage of the trailer you load! It was 1/2 the price of PODS.

Good luck!

I would suggest a Pod. I have friends that couldn't get their belongings more than 30 days.
They also lost some of their stuff.
Your furniture will not be move to Florida until a large truck is filled with other people's furniture as well as yours.
With a Pod. You can have someone load it. Or you can load it yourself. But everything in that pod is yours. It isn't moved for a small truck to a large truck. Lost or broken in the process.

what he said. we moved all our stuff down before realizing it didn't 'fit' the decor of Florida. if i had to do it over, i'd leave ALL of it behind & start anew.
