Black Fence that marks end of Villages property

Does anyone know who "owns" the black split-rail fence that indicates the end of Village's property? The back of our property is marked by this fence. I would like to add chicken wire to our "section" just as an extra precaution. Thanks!

I would guess that the black fence installed by the Villages to mark the end of the property is owned by the Villages.

You can call Customer Service to get more information and to ask who to talk to about the chicken wire.

Giving us where this is might be helpful

I don't think they are going to let you modify their fence.

villagetinker 09-28-2022 02:42 PM

IMHO, I doubt the chicken wire would be allowed, As noted above customer service would be the first call, and then if appropriate ARC would be the second call. What are you looking to keep out (or in?) in any case why couldn't the animal just go around to your neighbors? The other potential problem would be weeds, grass, etc., growing in the chicken wire, which may become a maintenance nightmare.

One of my neighbors lot ends at a drop into a water area. There is a fence to keep people from falling into the wetlands. My neighbor was told that he is responsible for maintaining his side of the fence and the Village will maintain the other side. In this case, I think "maintaining" means keeping it painted. Not sure who would fix a broken board.

And what might you be trying to stop?

:read: On Village Community Development Districts find your District and then find the "wall and fence matrix" for that District.

That what we did 18 years ago BEFORE buying. :ho:

Should be defined in your restrictions(?)

BoatRatKat 09-29-2022 05:35 AM

Depends what is on the other side. If it's a well travelled road then no, you'll likely be reported by someone. If you back up to wetlands, pasture or woods go for it, you'll be fine.

easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission. If "they" ask you to take it down, you haven't lost but so much and you can find out who owns the fence.

They say it belongs to them, but if you live in any area where there is no traffic or lots of people you maintain it.

My view is if you maintain it ...you own it. No one can tell me different.

As far as chicken wire, that is a very bad idea hard to maintain and who ever you are tying to keep out will climb it. Rats live in the top of a tree other animals will walk around you chicken wire in your neighbors yard and come to yours.

Check your VCDD. The are most likely the owner and responsible for maintenance. Or, you can call The Department of Property Management. They schedule maintenance of it.

Chicken wire

Good idea to keep people in. God knows what would happen if we left the villages. LOL

What did they say when you called the district office - they will also tell you about attaching something to the black fence that they own - make the call and save time reading all the stupid responses on this site!!

Mrs.Guy 09-29-2022 12:44 PM

 Not all responses are stupid. Not all questions are stupid. Just some of each.

bark4me 09-29-2022 06:07 PM

I have the black 4-board fence behind my house and the houses of my neighbors to my left and right, all built during 2010-2012.

The fence I'm describing is about a mile long. The property on the other side is non-Villages, now Trailwinds Village. It originally was a pasture and is now commercial & residential.

The fence is on our properties. I (we) are sure of this because I and many of my neighbors have found the yellow surveyor pins that mark our property lines. We are responsible for its maintenance, although nobody has had to do anything, not even paint.

When our houses were built, we also got plants put in on our side, a row of ligustrum bushes and several oak trees. The ligustrum are now very thick and each owner trims them to a height and thickness that suits them.

It's your fence, so do what you want. In my case, I added some black weed-control landscape fabric to fill in the spaces between the boards. This was near my pool/bird cage and enhanced my privacy.
