Anyone planning to travel the Great Loop?

I thought it was the name of a golf cart route around the villages.

Great loop

Did the trip in 2001 took 7 months and loved it. Left from Englewood Fl and returned there. After the trip sold the boat and started RVing and still doing it.

About 800 loopers are on the loop at any given time. Our neighbor left 4 weeks ago. You travel counter clockwise. There is a web site. Google great loop. It's a big deal. Another neighbor spent last winter in Florida and returned in August.

I've followed the travels of Sam and Rev on YouTube ("What Yacht To Do") and have really enjoyed their series. They are actually on the second round. I was fascinated to learn that he was a U2 pilot in the Air Force.. So if anyone wants to know what the Great Loop is all about, check out "What Yacht To Do" on YouTube. If you like boating, you will probably find this really interesting.

Some friends of mine moved from The Villages to Georgia, bought a boat and did it or are doing it now.

That is definitely on my bucket list, especially since I’m from chicago. I have many friends that have and they enjoyed every day of it!! I love that there is a good app now where your friends can track you!! Go for it if you can!!!!

I to. I though it was the loop over the new bridges. By the way I heard the toll booths are going in at the bridges.:D :22yikes:

We did the loop in 2007. Great trip! Wonderful history & geography lesson and you meet many wonderful people. There are at least 3 other couples in The Villages that did it in 2007. Always willing to talk about it.

Very interesting, Gather that someone must be awake and on watch 24/7.

Fair ‘nuf. However, did you consider that the time for the OP to mention what it is might be orders of magnitude less than the time required for vast numbers of non boaters to look it up?

We've done most of the Great Loop. The only route we didn't do is the rivers from Chicago to the Gulf. There's a good chance we will do it this coming late winter / early spring. And we'd do it backwards as our boat is here in FL. Then we'd turn around and come back down the rivers, slowly... seeing everything we didn't see going up. Also thinking about taking a side trip up the Ohio River. If you have a boat and are thinking about doing the Loop, we'd love to hear from you. Feel free to email us at nc-mtns@att.net.

We'd sure like to know who the "Loopers" are who live in The Villages. We've done part of it... and continuing soon. Please email us if you know how to contact those in The Villages who are doing it... nc-mtns@att.net.

It was on our bucket list for a long time. We first retired on a sailboat and cruised it from Baltimore to Stuart, FL. We thought about it then, but dealing with the mast in the canal/river portions just seemed overwhelming. Now the sailboat is gone and we sometimes toy with the idea of getting a small, capable, power boat and doing it in stages. We lived aboard boats off and on for years and I no longer have the desire to be aboard for a year straight. If there is ever a get together of Loopers we would love to join in and hear their stories and suggestions on the logistics of doing it part time.
