Say no to Round up ready sod , PLEASE?
 

Seems to be a trend towards this new Round Up ready GMO ST Augustine. THIS I DO NOT ENDORSE!! I hope TV is giving a choice in the new homes to use non-GMO varieties, but I doubt it. If you follow the money, I am sure there is a LOT of money behind this new variety.

I sadly await the future of Mother Nature ( and our ground water, ponds and lakes) where all these lawn spraying companies convince tens of thousands of people to pay them to spray unchecked amounts of herbicide on their lawns..

I just say no to Round Up and use Vinegar and Salt. Works perfectly - when I do it. I need to be more consistent in the application

Vinegar /salt mixture is not good near plants, as it is a root uptake. It will kill plants you spray near as well as the weeds. Round up is foliar uptake.

What exactly is wrong with it? What's your CV?

The Villages had been planting ProVista at least three years now. Slower growth, needs less water and chemicals than previous turf. And there are herbicides that can safely control it.

I can find NOTHING to support the claim that the salt/vinegar mixture is root uptake, but a lot shows it is leaf intake. "Yes, if you use large amounts of salt, it can damage nearby plants. I would not recommend using LARGE amounts. In 3 years of using small misting spray on weeds, I have had no damage to nearby plants.

I have no idea if Roundup is safe. I am not a scientist. But, Monsanto recently agreed to pay an $11B lawsuit to make it go away. So far as I know, no one has sued either salt or vinegar companies, and most sources recommend it on salads.

Each to their own. I am NOT saying anyone that wants to use it should stop. I am saying I will stick with my solution.

Damage From Too Much Salt in Soil
Salt hurts your plants by damaging their roots, and thus limiting their ability to absorb the nutrients they need. This is more likely to occur when the soil is moist. Damaged soil must be removed as the impact is long term.

I kind of think that someone wrongly believes provista round up ready has round up in it. It doesn't. has nothing to do with that. it is a great grass which is so much better on the environment as it needs less cutting and less water. Like all grass you have to keep on top of the chinchibugs and other insects that eat sod

Just because it's glyphosate-tolerant, doesn't mean you have to use round-up on it.

True, but the concern is my neighbor(s) might.

With "regular" grass you have to be careful using Roundup since it will kill the grass. Roundup is still used, but it is used sparingly. When the grass is glyphosate-tolerant there will be less concern about overuse of Roundup. If my neighbor's application stays on their property - great. However, if they spray heavily since it won't hurt their grass then the overspray may wind up on my property where it WILL hurt my grass (and other plants).

Someone who used to live near a farm told me about his experience catching overspray from the farmer who had glyphosate-tolerant crops.

Glyphosate does not pass through the skin barrier. So no worries as long as you don't graze on your lawn.

Farmers are a different story since exposure is via the digestive track.

How will my glyphosate-INtolerant grass and shrubs react to overspray from a careless lawn service spraying my neighbor's glyphosate-tolerant lawn?

I've seen squirrels, rabbits, birds, snakes, and dogs in the lawns around here too. I don't know if they would graze on my neighbor's glyphosate-treated lawn or how it would affect them.

As (I think) I stated in my first post, my concern isn't about the GMO plants, my concern is about careless use of Roundup-like chemicals. If there is no careless use then there is no concern.

Round Up on grass? You wouldn't have grass if you used that.

You are correct. Monsato is giving caner to dogs with their wonderful round-up.

30 percent vinegar halved with water and a small amount of dawn dish detergent, no salt. Salt remains in the soil and I garden a great deal and do not want salt in my soil. Kills everything, so do not spray on a windy day. Do not use round up but cannot tell the lawn people what to use. Make every effort to use least amount of chemicals. Gmo does not necessarily mean it’s bad. We have been eating gmo modified wheat for decades and if it wasn’t for that gmo modified wheat, millions of people all over the globe would have died of starvation.

Funny it took big pharm buying Monsanto for Round Up to become 100% completely benign to our groundwater, food crops and waterways.

The unchecked use of roundup is what I was referring to, not the use of a GMO lawn.
The area where this sod is being used is a huge watershed feeding into Lake Okahumka, headwaters for Lake Harris and our Chain of Lakes, Also...Lake Pan as well, feeding into the Withlacoochee and out to the Gulf via Yankeetown. This last area is the heart of the Big Bend .. Nature Coast.. I know nothing I say here will make a difference. Maybe once the MANATEES start having problems and someone finds a ton of glysophate in them. Wait, I forgot about big pharma and such, and how a very similar situation with the gators got hushed up a few years back. Rolling Down Hill like a snowball headed for H...

glyphosate breaks down in days...It does not go underground since it bonds to soil. It is not harmful to animal life. One billion people have been using RoundUp for 50 years. It is one of the greatest values to mankind right up there with antibiotics, nitrogen fertilizer, atomic power.

Glyphosate is basically just a weak phosphorous acid that breaks down rapidly.

I did not know TV was using ProVista. You can also keep it at a shorter height.

Looks nice but Deans doesn't seem to be able to make mine look quite as good as in The Villages maintained grass areas.

Seems bullet proof except to chinch bugs. If you see browning along the street or driveway, need to call to treat for them as soon as possible. The dead spots fill in quickly if you limit damage.

With the amount of weed killer being used to keep TV ponds and lakes "weed" free, I guess a few thousand gallons of Round Up more per day so we can finally have weed free lawns won't really make a difference. Spray away.
Most of us won't be around to see what the real consequences are.
