McCall’s

NEW OWNERS !
Still have fried chicken!
Still have Penn State and Bills Parties.

Changes will make it twice as good as it once was.

valuemkt 10-07-2022 12:55 PM

Since the overall experience there has been horrible the past few years, will it now be twice as bad ? Hopefully there will be a 100% turnover in service staff and management

PugMom 10-07-2022 01:13 PM

i had not heard of McCall's, & had to look it up. i see reviews that reflect exactly what you are saying & it appears the good reviews ended aprox. 1 year ago. do you think it's the management or worker's fault?? am curious, thx

;) Considering we have been going to McCall's for 18+ years let me offer my guess...... It just sold so maybe the OWNER didn't really want to be there and just maybe it was his/her/their fault. I find the workers to be very nice. Also, let's remember it's a BOWLING:icon_hungry:ALLEY!!!! Just some info. for posters who have never been there and didn't know it existed a day ago.

The last time we were there, probably a year ago, it was the manager's fault. The servers never stopped moving but there were too many tables seated for the number of servers and we were told by the manager that the kitchen was understaffed.

Being short on staff happens, especially so soon after COVID, but the manager should have kept some tables empty to improve the experience for the rest.

(we haven't been avoiding McCall's, just don't get up to Spanish Springs very often)

Keefelane66 10-07-2022 02:59 PM

Restaurants fail because of poor management if you pay peanuts you get monkeys to work for you. Owners usually take out capital and don't reinvest.

PugMom 10-07-2022 03:42 PM

i don't get to Spanish Springs much either, which is a shame because it's such a lovely area. thanks for the input, i may try it someday

Mleeja 10-07-2022 05:59 PM

I hope the new ownership improves the service. Our last couple of trips there were not the best. Again, the wait staff was prompt, courteous, and helpful but the food took forever to arrive. Most bad restaurant reviews revolve around slow service from the kitchen. It is up to management to get the proper kitchen staff. Then again, I am willing to guess short order cooks are hard to find…

I did not know it was a bowling alley. So do you order food while bowling or can you go even if you don’t want to bowl. Have only sat outside for a couple drinks.

I've noticed there was a bowling alley attached but to me it is a bar/restaurant.

Never saw a bowling alley with 20+ tables, a stage, a full menu, servers, and an outdoor eating area. But then I haven't spent much time at bowling alleys in the last 20 years so.....

Go to McCall's and take a seat facing the bar or the door and you won't even know a bowling alley exists.

I agree. Always amazed you can't hear the bowling.

Have you been to Fiesta Bowl? Similar setup...... can't remember if they have a stage.

I believe the main issue at McCalls with slow service results mostly from a very small kitchen. Years ago, even before the population explosion south of 44, the kitchen could not handle a full crowd because they don't have the physical capacity to cook that much food in a short amount of time.

The restaurant is co-located with the bowling alley. However, once the doors are closed, you cannot hear the noise from the allies. The restaurant is completely separate from the allies, having its own servers and kitchen.

daca55 10-08-2022 06:47 AM

I have heard some good music at McCalls and the food was ok. Hope they don’t change too much!

bilcon 10-08-2022 06:48 AM

Did I read that someone bought both bowling alleys or am I just dreaming?

Rzepecki 10-08-2022 07:15 AM

Try the fried chicken. Worth the extra wait time. Absolutely terrific!

Dr Winston O Boogie jr 10-08-2022 07:18 AM

I’ve been here for over ten years. When I first got here I heard about the famous fried chicken dinner at McCalls. So after a few years I decided to try it. Sorry to say, it was awful. I was shocked at how bad it. Lots of overcooked pieces of batter and burnt chicken. Honestly the best fried chicken I’ve had came from Publix. I’m glad that Bills fans have a place to go to watch their games and be together but the food was not very good. Maybe the new owners will improve on that.

MidWestIA 10-08-2022 07:40 AM

Chicken

McCalls 2017 had the best fried chicken in the area BUT you knew you would sit for around 30 minutes for them to cook it

NoMo50 10-08-2022 07:44 AM

Does the new owner still offer a free dinner on your birthday?

Bowlero Corp: Bowling is Just the Beginning

New owner of both bowling centers

Chandra10100 10-08-2022 07:46 AM

Let’s hope not!

Chandra10100 10-08-2022 07:47 AM

Bowlero is the new owner of both alleys and restaurants.

Chandra10100 10-08-2022 07:47 AM

No I’m sorry. They don’t offer that at this time.

Reminds me of a movie I saw where a con man had 365 driver's licenses for that purpose.

Damn, that was the reason we went there at least once a year. Usually brought a small group and made it worth it for them.

Also Tuesday night Blues Jams were good. Used to love the one at WOB with SSnakeeyez but it has gone away I guess. That was usually great.

I’ve been a customer and was looking forward to the change but we ate there last week and it was bad. Ordered steak nachos and the chips were stale, literally maybe 5 pieces of meat and hardly any other toppings. Yes they have chicken but only get 1 side (used to be 2) and raised the price a couple dollars. Very disappointed ☹️ On the plus side, the waitress noticed I didn’t eat the nachos and took them off the check which was very nice.

Service and food has been so lousy, that I don't even go there on my birthday for my free dinner.

Last few times I had chicken there the pieces were very small. Used to be huge pieces of chicken. IMO Metro diner has very good chicken with very large pieces.

jminnis 10-08-2022 03:29 PM

We were very disappointed. They ran out of chicken the night we went. Menu very limited, wine expensive, small pours. Won't go back until we hear better reviews.....

Lunalou 10-09-2022 04:26 AM

Went there the other day. 2 servers rolling into dinner. Lots of guests getting up and leaving. They should clean house, close for a week , hire new staff and re open

LucyP 10-09-2022 04:53 AM

Both bowling alleys we’re brought out by Big bowling company call Bowlers ?
