State Farm Auto insurance increase?

Just received my upcoming auto insurance renewal for our two cars.

One had a 15% increase the other 18% increase.
I called my agent and the explanation was state of FL increases due to rising cost of repairs, parts, administration.

The first time with State Farm there has been a premium increase on cars more than 3 years old.

We are long term State Farm customers but we are now motivated to shop around at other "major" insurers.

OP, good luck with your shopping. You might get a company that will give you a slightly cheaper rate for a year but then really stick it to you or cancel you the next. Full disclosure, I was with State Farm for many years and retired and move to Florida. At the time, State Farm
would not insure my new house because of their losses with Katrina. I had one small claim in 40 years. That has changed. So I dropped them because I was mad. Bottom line, I shopped around and ended up back with State Farm. They are a Mutual company (Policyholders are co-owners) and any profits are paid out in dividends. There is an incentive to keep costs and rates low. That said, a Stock Insurance Company also may pay a dividend to their stockholders. Nice to have choices.

I had that last year with AllState, had been with them for years and moved to State Farm, I'm guessing I'll be looking again....

MrFlorida 12-28-2022 11:03 AM

I had Geico, had large increase, went to Progressive, now same thing.....they got us.

New Englander 12-28-2022 11:24 AM

The Lawyers on TV encouraging people to hire them and you'll get a big settlement doesn't help the insurance rates.

Babubhat 12-28-2022 11:39 AM

Happens with all companies. Used State Farm, left and back 10 years later. Never a satisfactory explanation . The quote says if the want your business . Keep shopping

Last year, Allstate, who I had been with for 27 years, raised my premuim by 32 percent. So, I switched to State Farm and I am now paying less than half of what I was paying Allstate.

jebartle 12-28-2022 04:52 PM

We find Hartford/AARP the best insurance and rate, Mercedes for a year, $700.

Michael G. 12-28-2022 07:01 PM

I held 4 policies with State Farm for the last 7 years, home, car, cycle and umbrella.

Sold the cycle 4 years ago and with insurance raising rates the last couple years, the remaining 3 policies per month are the same cost without the cycle policy.

Go figure. barf

Good luck! I did the same and stayed with State Farm. Although mine also went up, it was significantly cheaper since I had other insurance with SF. I wasn't prepared to move everything for a one year savings and a single policy with other companies was eye opening.

bowlingal 12-29-2022 06:44 AM

I also got an increase in auto policy. Called my agent and she switched me to Progressive and for better coverage and half of the premium.

Would you mind sharing your agent’s name and number? We are new here and want to use an agent to shop around for home and auto for us.

Nucky 12-29-2022 07:53 AM

I know this is not a popular answer but each year I shop each policy I have and end up staying with The Villages Insurance. This year for the car I went with Auto Owners Insurance thru The Villages and it was half the price of Travelers Insurance. Good Luck OP.

Bay Kid 12-29-2022 08:03 AM

Crazy world we are in for the past year. Eggs are up over 40% from last year.

I shop mine every year and have found the first 6 months they give you a good deal, ie Geico, and then jack it up.
I have used Elly at Triton Insurance , a broker, and she finds me the best ongoing deal. 954-773-9434
She’s done the same for my family and friends.

mrf0151 12-29-2022 08:36 AM

Just renewed our Travelers Insurance on Auto and no change to speak of.
On the other hand, like everyone else on the Homeowners side it went up about 20 percent.

Rich42 12-29-2022 08:38 AM

Been with State Farm all my life. Wife and I both turned 80 this year and they increased my rate on 5 year old car 43%—and car is only driven 3k miles per year! Thought age discrimination was illegal.

gmracket 12-29-2022 08:44 AM

Aaa

I have had State Farm, Allstate and now I'm with AAA. I saved hundreds of dollars by going over to AAA. They have gone up also but not like the others. Hope it doesn't change this year.

Flyers999 12-29-2022 08:52 AM

I've been with State Farm auto since moving to TV. I like the way they charge your credit card monthly. I do use their app which gives you a discount if you get a perfect score, which doesn't happen often since each time I get deducted points for driving the roundabouts too quickly.
No increase yet but Ill be watching my mailbox.

We are paying for all the rich people's homes on the coast that get slammed by hurricanes. Not class warfare, just the facts.

I would think that the reason for the increase in insurance is the INCREASE in speeding and running stop signs that I notice in my neighborhood after the major part of the Pandemic was over. The certainly could also be other reasons. Body shops have probably increased their repair costs to keep up with the general inflation. Plus a lot of companies, in general, around the whole country have taken advantage to raise prices.

OhioBuckeye 12-29-2022 10:25 AM

Well check if you want but everything is going up, bet your home Ins. went up too! You would think that I haven’t had a claim in 10,15 or 20 yrs. but thousands of of other people have, who do you think pays for these claims not just the ones that turn in claims, everyone pays. I haven’t never turned in a house Insurance claim, last yr. (2022) my Ins. Was just under $900. a yr. got my bill for this coming yr. & it’s costing me $1,400.+ believe me you won’t get it any cheaper. Good luck checking!

I have been with State Farm since 1966. One of the reasons is that I am grandfathered under the original policy which states that State Farm cannot cancel a policy. I, too, have been subject to annual increases in the last two years. The agent informed me that State Farm will increase my rate annually because I am over 80. I asked if it was the company's desire for those over 80 to surrender their driver's license. The agent shrugged. I will deal with these increases because other carriers may not be willing to insure me.

I agree about homes on the coast. All new buildings should be 1/2 mile from the water line.

I am thinking that most 80-year-olds WOULD have statistically MORE accidents PER MILE. But, because they drive FEWER miles, I would think that those factors would average out - leaving the insurance company with the same, or less, repair costs as a younger driver.

Yes, we did the same: went through the Villages insurance. We’ve had Gieco for decades and the price went through the roof. No accidents or tickets. We called The Villages insurance and got 1/2 the price.

Aces4 12-29-2022 12:06 PM

One has to remember, auto insurance cost is actually very small for most of us but someone has to cover the costs of all the unlicensed/uninsured including the huge number of undocumented people driving in the USA. Someone has to fund those costs and it’s us.

I guess they raised ours to cover your other half...

Sorta staying on topic with auto insurance, I just transferred my progressive auto policy from Colorado to Florida today - my annual premium went down $400 with identical coverage (full coverage with high liability limits).

When you move to a different state, it's a whole new ballgame, even with the same company.

True- was expecting to pay the same or even higher, so this was a nice surprise - Didn’t realize how expensive auto insurance was in Colorado - regarding my homeowners policy, I was expecting sticker shock with all that’s been in the news recently, but was surprised that for similar coverage I had on my Colorado townhome, my annual premium actually decreased by $50. Add to all this, that there is no state income tax in Florida (unlike Colorado), and the sales tax is a bit cheaper - Florida is turning out to be quite a bit less expensive for me overall. The only area where Colorado is cheaper is property tax.
