Bathroom sink installation

Who would you use to install a bathroom sink? I know Home Depot has installation services but would I be better off buying a sink from a plumber and having them install it ? And if so which plumber would you recommend? Thank you!

Mike Scott Plumbing is excellent

retiredguy123 02-02-2023 12:29 PM

I would use Mike Scott, but I would probably buy the sink and faucets myself, if that is an option.

I have used Anthony Torri Plumbing with great results for that very thing as well as a few other jobs. Reasonable price also.

I did my own, not a big project, I would guess there are several handymen that could handle this project, especially if you are just replacing the sink and not the entire counter top. I replaced the counter top with one piece (built in sink) units.

I did my own too, but OP must be aware that any change in depth of sink can affect the plumbing. It's easy enough to deal with if you have the proper tools, but not everyone can do this somewhat tricky work of lying under a sink.

We had Doc's redo our kitchen, we got a deeper sink. I'm glad they had a great plumber. He needed his skills to get the drain to line up properly. I've done that kind of work for myself, but I think I would have been over my head on this one. A good plumber is worth the one time cost. After years of using the sink (with no problems) you never think about what it cost.

Yes, any vertical or horizontal change in the drain location can make this project very difficult. Also, sometimes on older houses, the builder glued the drain pipes together, which means that you may need to replace the entire drainage system under the sink. I once had to use a flexible drain connection to make the sink drain line up with the piping.

Mike Scott Plumbing worked with our countertop fabricator to install a new kitchen sink and new laundry room fixtures. We did not buy any materials from Mike Scott, they only did the plumbing work. They showed up on time to remove the old stuff and stop the water to the kitchen and laundry room sinks, which was important so as not to hold up the fabricator from installing the countertops. Then they came back early the next morning (after the countertop work was complete) to finish their part of the project. They did an excellent job, especially since the new kitchen sink drain was not in the same position as the old one, so some additional (minor) plumbing work needed to be done to reroute the plumbing to accommodate the location of the new drain (which we were told about when they provided us the quote). Our countertop installer recommended Mike Scott Plumbing over a handyman because he said that he trusted them to do the job right and they stand behind their work. He said that he had worked with them on many projects over the years. We are glad that we took the contractors advice. Since then we have used them on other plumbing projects. Highly recommend them.

If you hire a company to replace your countertops, and they include replacing the sinks and doing electrical work, make sure that they use a licensed plumber and electrician. Ask for the name and license numbers of the plumber and electrician before they start the project. Some countertop companies will cut corners by hiring unlicensed people for this work. It is illegal.

Buy the sink from whomever you want. Hire a plumber, Mike Scott or whoever. IMO, do NOT let the big box store arrange the install.

JGibson 02-03-2023 11:17 AM

Mike Scott is good but I did have them put in a new garbage disposal that died in 2 years which only had a 1 year warranty. So yeah maybe buy your own sink.

Another for Mike Scott.

I've used Home Depot / Lowe's sub-contractors in the past and have been very happy.
BUT
It's a lottery on who (or is it whom) you get.

Just installed walk in shower for Doc's. They did the plumbing. Very good folks.

Use your head! Buy the sink at HomeDepot and the parts you need.

Ask the associate what they charge for the install by their licensed Plumber then get an estimate from a licensed Plumber in your area! Wisdom is more precious than pearls.

He replaced our kitchen sink, faucet and hot water heater. Very clean and we thought his prices were reasonable.
