LED Fixture in Laundry room
Does anyone know a person or company who can change out the fluorescent laundry room fixture for a LED, and also put a device in that will automatically light when I walk in the room? I could use a company that can do the whole job, including providing the fixture.

Replacing the light switch with a motion detector switch is a very easy DIY project. |
As mentioned you can easily purchase an LED light that will plug into your current florescent fixture. But not all LED’s are the same. Some will work with your current ballast installed. Some require removal of the ballast. And some require some rewiring in the fixture. So you need to do some investigation before buying so that you know all the retrofit required. The easiest solution is an LED bulb that simply plugs in the florescent fixture and requires no fixture rewiring.
The LED bulbs typically use 25 to 40% less energy than a florescent. But the bulbs are much more expensive. I know LED’s claim long life, but that has not been my experience. I considered changing the florescent in my washroom to LED … But decided against it. My washroom lights rarely are on more than 3 or 4 hours per day, and the energy savings would only be a few dollars per year. All of the lights in my home are LED except for the florescent in the garage and washroom |

We can offer LED hardwire tubes for the existing fixture AND an occupancy sensor switch that will turn the light on with motion into the room. Since you found us on Talk of the Villages, you get 5% OFF too! Just make sure you mention this comment. - Casandra |
Hayes Electric just did an extensive update our our lighting. They replaced the garage fluorescent with LED and installed an LED over the washer and dryer. They supplied everything and did a fine job with everything. Not sure about the automatic lighting part of your question.

you can get the motion sensor light switch and the LED replacement tube from Lowes or Home Depot. I would research one line and buy the parts yourself, and then find a handy man to wire in the new switch. You should be able to replace the bulb yourself Lutron Maestro 5 Amp Single-Pole or Multi-Location Motion Sensor Switch, White $35 Philips 40W Equivalent 4 ft. Linear T12 Type A Instant Fit Daylight Deluxe LED Tube Light Bulb (6500K) $12 the 6500K (kelvin) light color is too white, 3000K would be best for the small space. . . maybe 4000k get both and try them out. . Total parts $50 Find a handyman or a neighbah, |

Color match? I tend to buy far more bulbs than I need. Some to replace then as they burn out and when I run out of spares I replace all the bulbs in one fixture and use those as spares. Testimonial. We have three LED bulbs in our outside lamp. Very rough guess9 years on 10 hours a day 9x365=3285 days x10 hours=32850-they are still going-they certainly have earned their keep. |

My laundry room has two doors and two light switches. Only one light switch needs to be replaced. In my situation, the light switch to replace was the one on the wall as I entered the laundry room from the house side. If you replace the one on the garage door side, you will activate it simply by walking by the room. |

I went to Lowe’s and got LED bulbs for the fixtures in the garage and laundry… huge difference! No need to buy a new fixture!

I have replaced all my fluorescent tubes with led's. I have used both styles, but now only use direct wire type tubes and eliminate the ballast. If you use direct replacement and the ballast go's bad you are doing another fix.

Recommendation for Electrical Work
My wife and I purchased a home in The Villages last November. A service provider recommended Lenhart Electric for a number of jobs that required a licensed electrician. We have used them on two occasions and have been totally satisfied with the quality of their work, their friendly service, and the value realized from the work completed.

Get some quotes
Looks like you have a few recommendations of electricians that can do this. I have used Pike’s a few times and was happy with their service. Though several suggest this job as dyi I would not advise doing electric yourself if you don’t know what to do or aren’t comfortable.

I have used Pikes several times and they were wonderful. I certainly would have an electrician do this.

Pike’s Electric. Reliable and priced fairly. They can supply all the components you would need to do the job right and to code!

Thank you so much for your recommendation! We are happy to help :)

Thanks for the great information,
I appreciate all the helpful comments here, and decided to have Pike’s do the job—and I am so pleased! They did a wonderful job on the LED lights, and a couple of other things I wanted done. I hope all the posters here know how helpful this has been. A big thanks to all!

Solar tube is the answer
We installed a solar tube. Daylight all day long. Of course cost is a considering factor.

I’ve been considering replacing our fluorescent tubes with LEDs in our laundry room. I’m a DIYer so this would be simple.
We tend to leave that lamp on much of the day - between our kitchen and garage. It works fine and I have two extra bulbs if they go out. I simply cannot justify a reason to buy new LED bulbs and swap out. Current light is perfectly bright enough. And a saving of 50% elec seems not worth the LED upgrade cost… |
As others have noted, they make LED replacements for fluorescent tube lights. Just take the old one down and bring it with you to Lowes or HD if you don't trust yourself to get the right one. I would try that first before going the electrician route.
I replaced the ones in my walk in closet. Huge difference. No issues with the ballast, and that was probably 6 months ago. I took the one down in my garage entirely. Wired in a socket screw-in bulb fixture and into that screwed in one of those LED bulbs with the adjustable flat panels with 100's of individual LED lights. Again, huge difference in the amount of light I now have in the garage. Think the entire fix was $15. |
