How will LIV golfers do in the Masters?

There are 18 LIV golfers playing in the Masters this weekend.

How many will finish in the top 10?

Keefelane66 04-04-2023 02:11 PM

Could care less.

Nothing against them, but hope they are all in the bottom 18 and miss the cut.

I read that the BigBoss of LIV wants all his players surrounding the 18th green to cheer on, what he believes, will be the LIV winner on Sunday.

I think they will do well and I don't understand why folks are so against the LIV. Golf is Golf and the pros should be able to play in whatever league they wish to participate.

I was at the LIV Orlando event and loved the excitement of the tournament ..
So different and exciting from the usual tournament !

Very very different from the usual tournament and I thought the award deal at the end was fun and nice change from the usual ....

At this moment there will be 78 players that won't finish in the top ten

6 of the 18 LIV players are former masters winners with 9 wins

My guess is 4

I don’t understand the animosity either. I was watching the Masters and most of the PGA players seem to be welcoming the LIV players. The PGA has increased the purse at many PGA tournaments so the PGA players should be thankful.

I am only interested in the Majors, the Players, and the Ryder Cup. I hope that these tournaments continue to take the best players in the world whether they are from the PGA, the European tour, the Asian tour, or LIV. Most fans want to see the best players compete for Majors.

oh say can you see

Rwirish 04-05-2023 04:51 AM

Hopefully none.

La lamy 04-05-2023 05:31 AM

Maybe Dustin Johnson? He won it in 2020 so I'm sure that helps his chances. I'll be enjoying his grouping since he's with Corey Conners (a fellow Canadian) who just won the Valero Texas Open.

Some people would say - don’t know until after the cut is made.

Jantao 04-05-2023 06:49 AM

My guess is at least 5!

That is like picking the final four after the second round. Make the prediction before Friday night!

I’m hoping for a LIV victory with several other LIV players in the top10. Would love to see McIllroy out of the top 10 along with Justin Thomas and others that have been anti-LIV. They’re now benefiting from what LIV has done. One awesome scenario would be Patrick Reed beating Rory McIllroy in a playoff 😜

I definitely wouldn’t mind a Scotty Scheffler repeat. I just want to see the LIV players do well.

GpaVader 04-05-2023 08:17 AM

Based on the weather forecast, regardless of where they are affiliated with, it could be the best players that can deal with adversity...

Regorp 04-05-2023 08:20 AM

They left PGA for money, now want to take their money, so let us see most miss the cut. That being said, rooting for Brooks Koepka.

Most people - in any type of work, whether it be sports, business, etc. - would take the money. Koepka reportedly jumped for a $150 million signing bonus!

I could be bought out for a lot less. And I assume that is the case for most people on this board.

I didn't see any of the PGA players turn down the extra money that the PGA added this year because of LIV.

PGA Tour making drastic changes as war with LIV Golf intensifies

PGA has nothing to do with this INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT. The Masters is, and will always be, for the best players in the world.

hypart 04-05-2023 09:42 AM

PGA tour signed a 9 year deal with CBS values around $500 million per year in 2022. Also, streaming deal with ESPN and Netflix added some $$$. The increase in purses is not due to LIV. There's just a ton more money now.

But LIV did have influence on the PGA by changing the makeup of tournaments. There are now designated events which all the top players must play. This has pros and cons. The major con is now a large portion of tournaments are going to suck since there won't be a top player participating, such as this past week's Valero open which I don't think had a top 50 player playing in it. This was a tournament that Spieth and Scheffler most likely would have played if it wasn't for the changes.

bobmarc 04-05-2023 09:53 AM

I don't understand why so many people are against what the LIV guys did. As D Johnson said....if you were told you could work less hours and get a substantial raise, would you turn it down? I know I would not have.

I guess it would depend on the company and who your boss is. Therein lies the problem with LIV, for some people anyway.

Nicely stated. And my guess is many athletes go abroad if more money is offered by a different organization.

The main reason is where the money they pay their golfers come from and the reputation that country has on various actions.

LIV golfers are simply high paid employees of the Saudis which are trying to improve their image on the world stage.

Greatlawn 04-06-2023 09:01 AM

Yeah, like all those soccer players who play for teams in other countries Americans love to hate - you know, like France

After the first round, the only one in the top 10 is Brooks Koepka. He is tied for the lead.

There are four other LIV golfers in the top 30. Cam Smith, DJ, Reed, and Mickelson.

Those 6 are mostly out of their prime and/or declining rapidly including Phil, Sergio and Louie. Koepka is looking good after 1st round and appears to be healthy.

Actually, not all of best players. They still allow past winners to play which now includes Fred Couples, Larry MIze, Sandy Lyle, US Amateur and runner up. Noted that this is last year for Mize and Lyle.

My own opinion is that LIV has diluted the competition and star power.

Complacency by the PGA, now they are playing catch up. Happens with most monopolies when competition starts to erode their position. Plus if you complain about the Saudi's money and their social position, why aren't you complaining about the Corporations that are taking their money?

Rainger99 04-08-2023 03:11 PM

I wish I had put some money on Mickelson making the cut and Rory missing it!!

tophcfa 04-08-2023 05:25 PM

I used to like Scottie Scheffler until I saw the recording of him purposely walking right in front of Cam Smith’s line as he was crouched down reading his putt. It was a major breach of etiquette and clear as day to me it was an intentional act. It was also no coincidence it happened right after Cam’s intentions to join LIV went public. It’s OK to disagree with players jumping to LIV, but don’t carry your feelings to the course and breach etiquette. That was a major A hole move. Scottie should be thanking the highly ranked players that jumped to LIV, which resulted in significantly higher purses now being paid on the PGA tour.

On another note, a LIV player (Brooks Koepka) is currently leading the Masters by 4 strokes.

fdpaq0580 04-08-2023 05:36 PM

Some will have a good tournament, others, not so good. Lots of talking heads spouting their after the fact "genius". Cheers and groans. In the universe, nothing much changes.

I hadn’t seen it but I found it online.

Everybody calm down, Scottie Scheffler didn’t intentionally walk across Cam Smith’s line … probably | This is the Loop | GolfDigest.com

Golf Digest seems to excuse it as not being intentional.

True. Years ago, Byron Nelson won a whole string of tournaments when guys like Hogan and Snead went off to war.

Caymus 04-09-2023 07:07 AM

I found it amusing that LIV (Roman Numerals for 54) players made the cut. An omen?

Rainger99 04-09-2023 07:27 PM

Three of the top six were LIV - Koepka, Mickelson, and Reed.

Rainger99 04-09-2023 07:58 PM

Jon Rahm won $3.24 million for winning the Masters today.

Last week, Brooks Koepka won the LIV Golf League event in Orlando. The first prize last week was $4 million.
