Thieves at Colony Stealing Golf Clubs Off Carts!
Yesterday, a golf club was stolen off a golf cart outside Beef O'Bradys in Colony. There was a witness and Sheriff's deputies responded. The thief will be charged with burglary (as the cart is considered to similar to a car). The other individual will be charged as an accomplice as he drove the car. Deputies stated this happens all the time, but people think they lost their clubs or someone mistakenly grabbed their clubs. More times than not, they are being stolen!!!
We all enjoy going anywhere we want with our clubs on our carts. Maybe it's time to re-think having them on our carts except when playing golf. |

Some times I hope they find my cart and take my clubs, it would be a great new excuse and save me the embarrassment of actually trying to use the dam things on the course. I would be forced to focus on the more important aspects of my golf game, like, beer.

Steal mine ! I need an excuse to buy new ones.

Based on a neighbor's experience with having golf clubs stolen, apparently the police check with the used sporting goods stores.

How can you lock single clubs up? Yes, a cover works, but how do you secure a cover to prevent theft?

I always take mine off my cart when I'm not playing. If we stop for a beer on the way home from a game, I try to park where I can see my cart. Unfortunately, that's about all you can do. |
When off to lunch after golf lock your clubs with a locking cover. You can buy these at our country club pro shops. Got mine at Cane Garden years ago. Looks similar to this photo:

A knife will take of this............slice the cover open. :gc: |
Bottom line is if someone wants something bad enough, they will find a way to take it. The main thing you are trying to do is eliminate the opportunity for someone to take it and go. If your bag is covered, they can't see what you have and unless they want the entire bag, they'll leave it alone. Uncovered and the see you have the nice new Calloway, hit the ball longer and straighter club, they will likely try to take it. Like most locks, it will keep the honest people, honest....

Please end my pain: STEAL MINE !
|
Buy cheap clubs. You'll save money, play just as well, and you won't worry about someone stealing them.

Thieves take the path of least resistance and quickest opportunities. A golf bag that has a locked cover doesn’t provide that opportunity so it’s highly likely they will move on to other carts. Nothing is perfect protection, but taking about 30 seconds to secure your sticks is way better than leaving them totally exposed. The new Callaway Paradym driver costs $600 bucks, I don’t have one but if I did I wouldn’t leave it unattended and unlocked in a public place. I always protect my clubs, having two identical bags at each of our homes makes replacements twice as expensive.

I remember in NYC they would walk around with cordless cutting wheels and cut those high end Kyroptinite locks in 15 seconds, it was like a hot knife going through butter. Now with expensive e-bikes they're having a field day up there.
Back to OP they do sell hard covers that lock to bag and cart. It's just a visual deterrent but the thief may move on to easier pickings. AirTags in bag is also good if they do get the whole bag, there is some flaws with this but still it's worth the $20 they cost. You can also lock the rain hood down that is attached to the golf cart. Also don't use original driver head-covers like Callaway Paradym and stop buying flashy Sun Mountain C130 cart bags to put on your 2023 Yamaha that has all the whistles and bells. It's just eye candy for thieves. The other problem is if the steal clubs and cart all together, then I hope you have insurance for the cart, house insurance may pay for clubs. Don't be putting in false claims either about your clubs because you want new ones. Insurance companies aren't stupid. I digress. |
But since you can’t see the type of clubs… and much easier to just go for the open bag clubs. They don’t try to take the bags because several are customized with name or personal logo embroidered etc. I suppose you could use an engraver on your clubs - makes it harder to resell though.

It's a deterrent... |

And my cover cost no where near $100... |

That's not worth a $50 cover to slow down a thief and probably make him move on to the next cart? If you say so... |

Bucket
You could put a 5 gal bucket over the clubs and lock that down through the handle or drill holes in it. May not stop a determined thief but should stop a casual thief.
|
Another deterrent. Have the name "Lefty" embroidered on the bag.

And while I've not done the math, I've read about full sets of clubs being stolen quite often... Add to that, a decent driver can cost $250-$600... A Scotty Cameron putter goes for $400-$500... Why are you so against making it LESS attractive to try and steal something? I understand being the contrarian, but dude, you're wrong on this... |

Golf CLUBS. Only ONE person asked how to secure ONE CLUB. Everyone else gave advice about securing ALL YOUR CLUBS... No one said "lock up A club"... None of the suggestions given were to lock up A club... Suggestions were given on how to secure ALL of your clubs, since while there are times when only one club is stolen, there are also times when the entire bag is stolen. Securing the ENTIRE BAG also secures the ONE CLUB... YOU are the only one harping on the ONE CLUB theory in an attempt to save face... Your suggestion to use the rain cover that comes with the bag is a lousy suggestion, since it is designed to protect the clubs FROM RAIN, not THEFT. Your claim that they could easily cut thru the cable lock cover is silly. It's not a cheap piece of nylon (like the rain cover) Just as pulling the retractable cover over items the back of your SUV doesn't entice someone to try to break in to see what's under it. A thief will look for items in the open, so they know if the juice is worth the squeeze... https://media2.giphy.com/media/z1bE45A1GsyT6/giphy.gif |
Is golf club (s) theft an epidemic at Colony?
Over the years clubs and carts have been stolen all over the Villages. The guys down in Bushnell do their job and a big percentage of the time, get the clubs and arrest the bad guys. Title of this thread implies all hell is breaking loose. |
