John Wayne - Rotten Tomatoes

He has been in a lot of very good movies. A number of them were featured when I audited a film criticism class back at the University of Nevada, Reno taught by Howard Rosenberg. chevron-right

This course I took was on Westerns. Also took one on Horror/Sci-Fi. Audited both as I already had two BAs and was looking into a Masters Degree.

I recall Red River, Stagecoach and maybe The Cowboys being covered by Professor Rosenberg in the course. And maybe this one--The Searchers - Rotten Tomatoes

Most all of them but

Rio Bravo is my all time favorite. Add in Dean Martin, Walter Brennan, Angie Dickinson and Ricky Nelson and a great story and performances what more can you ask?

The Quiet Man - Wikipedia

That was the favorite movie of a retired nurse I used to help with gardening, house cleaning, dog bathing, driving her for shopping, etc., in the older areas of Reno, Nevada. Her house was about 70 years old an this was in the 1970s through early 1980s. She had been in the house for decades and had seen Reno grow.

Think she had boarders and one of those was a boxer.

She kind of chilled to me when I took off to Brigham Young Law School in 1982 but I could only take about ten days of dealing with a roommate who was a recent convert to Mormonism who wanted me to see the light. She had really hated lawyers.

I did work for her a little bit more before most of our family moved out of Reno, Nevada in 1984. Her son was a police man with the Reno PD. Or, something like that. I would ask him about various cases I was interested in or ask her mother to relay my curiosity.

She really appreciated John Wayne movies though. She had been born around 1900 and probably had seen many of them in Reno movie theaters.

Lonely Are the Brave - Wikipedia

This is Kirk Douglas' favorite performance of his in a movie.

A very philosophical western. Deep stuff.

Gone with the Wind.
How the makeup people got him to look like Clark Gable was amazing.
Any film with Victor McLaglen supporting.

I like most of his films, but my personal favorites are True Grit, and The Shootist.

wamley 05-27-2023 06:56 AM

Sands Of Iwo Jima. Displayed some of the sacrifices our Marines made in what was one of the most difficult battles in WWII. They did so all over the Pacific from island to island. God Bless America and the men an women that serve her so well.

ThirdOfFive 05-27-2023 07:02 AM

The Shootist. In my opinion that movie really showed the depth of his acting skill. I loved True Grit as well but that was more vintage John Wayne:, rough, tough and nasty, with a little humanity thrown in.

Marmaduke 05-27-2023 07:48 AM

So funny you should ask, as we just watched The Shootist last night on Paramount +

Enjoyed it!

He certainly was everyones hero in America, in the Good Ole Days!

There was a 20 something nurse's aid who was taking care of my dad after surgery, as I was present.
Dad and I were talking about John Wayne. She actually said, "Who's That?"
Further, and to our dismay, she said, "Is he a baseball star?, because my Dad loved Pirate baseball.

During the course of the conversation, I asked her if she knew who Mark Twain/ Samuel Clemens was. Nope!
Crickets.

Rio Bravo and Sands of Iwo Jima would be tied for 2. My dad fought at Iwo Jima so that had special meaning to me.

El Dorado with Robert Mitchum, James Caan, and Ed Asner. One awesome cast and movie. The Duke at his finest.

In Harms Way... I love the cast, the story line and it contains the BEST WAR MOVIE QUOTE OF ALLTIME.
John Wayne from the bridge a few hours before an expected surface battle is asked: "Rock, What's it like? A surface battle I mean": The response: "It's like all battles; fought by scared men who would rather be someplace else"

Camranhvet 05-27-2023 09:08 AM

The Green Berets.

RMHisle 05-27-2023 09:11 AM

"In Harm's Way" is my favorite, and his last movie "The Shootist" is a close second.

garykoca427@gmail.com 05-27-2023 09:53 AM

So many good ones. Probably The Searchers, which may have been his best acting job. He was not exactly the hero in that film, but he was outstanding.

It has Lee Marvin, Jack Palance and Jeanne Moreau.
