Hose bibb through lanai screen?

One of our hose bibbs is on the non-used side of the house. I'm thinking it would be useful to extend the piping around the corner and into the lanai, thus providing a handy source of water for potting table (not outdoor kitchen) and also a hose that you don't have to drag halfway around the house to wash down the lanai. Sooo... is that possible? Is there a way to channel the pipe through the lanai screen in an attractive, finished way? Door to lanai is located on other side of the house. In other words, has anyone done anything like this?

retiredguy123 06-09-2023 09:48 AM

It sounds like you want to install a pressurized potable water pipe aboveground? If so, I wouldn't recommend it. It could freeze. Why not just keep a hose connected to the hose bibb for watering in the lanai?

I have done this, please send me a PM so we can discuss. it was a fairly simple project, done several years ago.

A "BillyBib" is another option:

My solution was to carefully drill a suitable hole through the aluminum frame (the portion bolted to the house), install a bushing, then install 1/2 inch PVC tubing and associated fittings as needed, and a flex washing machine hose to the faucet with its own shut-off valve. Works great.

The screen room drains are helpful also.

I recently had Anthony Torri Plumbing do something similar at a very reasonable price. They ran a water line through the attic and down to the location where I wanted the new hose bib. Just avoid Frank Gay Services!

Thanks!

This makes sense to me. Thanks so much for this detailed answer!

I had the opposite issue. My rear water line is in my birdcage - near the pool where they connected the autofill. I wanted a faucet outside the cage for cleaning the filter, hosing off furniture, etc. My floor consists of pavers, so I simply lifted up a row of pavers, connected a Tee to the line filling the pool and ran new pvc outside the cage (under the pavers, under the cage wall) then attached tnew faucet to outside wall.

Re-tamped the sand and put the pavers back, re-sanded the joints, and you would never know anything was ever done!

Should have done this when the pool was installed - live and learn!

Thanks for your reply and for advice about avoiding freezing. Keeping the hose connected is geographically difficult because of the need to drag the hose around the perimeter of the lanai to get into the lanai. Doable, but irritating, ya know? The suggestions for billybibb in this thread and the DYI option are good solutions, I think.

I use quick connects so a hose can be easily removed and reconnected when not in use.

Rather than drill your aluminum frame I would recommend trying to get a small piece of Frame from somebody changing their lanai out to glass they throw those frames out all the time, that way you are not Limited and you can mount that anywhere you want the Water to come through

Junehher 06-10-2023 07:52 AM

Get a Billy Bibb. Greatest thing ever - looks attractive, no hole for bugs to come into, and inexpensive. I paid $64.00.

Thank you. Your post and the helpful responses really helped us with the same dilemma.

Doubt you’d have to worry about freezing in central Florida. Temps never get that low long enough to do any damage.

DrHitch 06-10-2023 08:56 AM

You have received lots of advice on doing this.

As others have stated, one of the easiest ways is simply run 1/2" or 3/4" PVC plastic pipe above ground from the spigot to the Lanai and then clamp it to the aluminum frame.

One of the tricks to get from the spigot to the PVC pipe is simply to use a short, flexible metal braided hose like you see for a washing machine.. It has female fittings on both ends, one for the spigot and one for the head end of the PVC pipe. That way it can be easily disconnected and allowed to drain if it really gets below freezing in the winter.

Ditto on the screen room drains and Billy bib. Work great for pressure washing. Inexpensive and looks great only thing is you have to connect a hose from your bib on the house to the outside of the Billy bib. I sacrificed an older hose and cut it to the specific length. Just be sure to turn the water OFF at the house connection when not in use.

Call Screen Room Drains. They will install a hose bid on the inside of your screened room. Much less expensive than running pipes.

I'm confused. It looks like your house hose bibb is located very close to the lanai. But, I thought the OP wants to run a permanent water line a much longer distance, maybe 20 feet or so, from the house hose bibb to the lanai. That would be an aboveground potable water line, which I would not want at my house.

There hinge on the drains is a weak point.

My drain covers are breaking off at the hinge after a year. Need to find another way to keep them attached.

I have a hose normally attached inside the birdcage, one of the self coiling type, I can stretch it to get to any area of the bird cage, and it coils up to stay out of the way when not is use.

Lanai Billy-Bib is the answer: 352-342-7696. Does exactly what you're wanting. Very reasonable.

It could freeze? Where do you live?

I reread your post, and a neighbor extended the piping by using a flexible washer hose (like in my photos) to white PVC pipe buried next to the foundation of the house. I their case they did not carry it into the lanai like I did. They did add small brackets to hold the vertical pipes in place.

My hose bib was just outside my lanai, but it meant dragging the hose all the way to the back of the house to water. You can add a hose bib in the irrigation line next to the sprinkle valve manifold on the side of your house. Cost is about $35. You can see how it’s done on you tube.

Adding a hose bibb to the irrigation system is not a good idea. First of all, the water is not clean enough to hose down the lanai because it can cause staining on surfaces. And second, to comply with the plumbing code, the hose bibb needs to be in a locked box and have a sign on it warning people that it is not potable water and is not safe for drinking.
