Pickleball costs Americans up to $500 Million in injuries.
I found this review by an investment analyst interesting. A recent increase in healthcare utilization rates have been attributed to pickleball. More hip and knee surgeries are taken place.

And what are pickleball's health benefits?
I had a friend at local dog park who was, and still maybe is, a pickleball instructor. She was here from about 100 miles south where they have a lot more pickleball. Or did. The Villages probably surpassed this other place. |
Not surprising. We moved into a new village. Within six months four of our friends had broken bones from playing pickleball.

The Orthopedic doctors are busy with the expansion of Pickleball. At our age, you can overdo any sport thinking you were as young as you use to be. From experience, even back issues with too much golf!

It is definitely fun. Easier than tennis I'd say. There are groups in TV who do not know moderation when it comes to pickleball. First time I played was 20 years ago visiting my inlaws. A group of older ladies were playing on the next court. They got angry and a bit verbally aggressive because the pace we were playing was throwing off their game. The final straw was when a ball bounced off the top of the net and rolled their way. The mouths on those females (I did not ask but they appeared to be). On the way back I made a wrong turn somewhere near cane gardens (?). I ended up by a golf course. The elderly men must have heard the foul female language and taken it as a challenge. When we found our way back to the house I made some improper comment "Worlds friendliest hometown my a$$. Go..." What was this post about? |
Shouldn’t headline be pickle ball injuries cost insurance companies millions. If not people really need to rethink their coverage

Pickleball is a great sport, they claim it is easy to pick up but hard to master. A lot of beginners complain when they go up against more advanced players, WHY? If you don’t like it, then go to dozens of other courts that have your level of play. I’m sure the more advanced players don’t want to play down either so it is a win win.
I gave up tennis to play pickleball with no regrets. PB is a lot more fun on the courts with people at your level than playing tennis. |
I used to play ping pong and basketball a lot in my teens-30s. Yes there can be a lot of exertion and stops-starts on the knees. I found pickleball to be very similar to ping-pong and adapted well for a new player during my first couple tries. I'm not into it though but both ping pong and pickleball are great for burning calories and other benefits so not surprised at the health facts. I would suggest warming up lightly before beginning a game though. Maybe doing light weights before going out and playing. Don't stretch when muscles are cold, just do light squats and whatever muscles you'll use the most like back/shoulders. Been a weightlifter all my life and never had major reconstruction or surgeries...yet. Keep the knees strong with weights and keep body weight down to cut down on injures.

Pickleball is a blast. It's takes a bit to learn the rules, you've got to have proper shoes etc. There are many beginner pickleball times designated at rec centers where you will also find alot of advanced players on the same court. Staying within your skill level helps.

The racquets are too short for the balls which have inadequate bounce. Too many players straining to reach or diving for the ball.

At least two cardiac arrests on the pickelball courts I know of at Ezell so far. I was at the sports pool once when someone came over to use the phone for someone down on the pickle ball courts. Need to have phone and AEDs placed right at the pickelball courts. Stay safe out there!

There are over 3000 softball players in tv, I’m sure they have injuries also.

Helping Hands spoke at a VHA meeting I attended. It's the organization that loans out medical equipment. The speaker asked how many of us play pickelball and more than half raised their hands. He said to make sure and pick up one of their cards LOL. Just call 352-973-2284 to speak with one of their Coordinators:

Cardiovascular disease is and appears to always be the number one health care dollar and killer expense of Americans. Glad to see that pickleball players are attempting to be as active as possible. Knee and hip injuries are nothing compared to heart disease and related issues.

You need exercise to stay independent. Diet and exercise go hand in hand. Many injuries happen because people who start playing pickle ball lack balance, strength, and mobility. There’s more to starting any exercise.
I’m a personal trainer and can’t help but notice all the poor posture I see during my walks. I can help anyone who wants to improve their sport. |

Diet is far more important than exercise. Pickle ball will do very little to clear out the plaque that most Americans have built up in their bodies over the years if people do not change their eating habits. If you are taking Viagra, then you will probably be more prone to injury as it is the canary in the coal mine for heart disease.
