Getting rid of DVDs?

Is anybody getting rid of DVDs?

We're going on a multiday bike ride across Iowa with a few enthusiasts. Internet will be unreliable. We're hoping that someone has a dozen DVDs that they would be willing to donate.

We've checked some second hand stores. Apparently, they are not worth selling.

There is a small group of us setting up a free library of sorts for this event for our immediate group.

The Sumter County library on Powell Road and on Belvedere Road sells DVDs for 1 or 2 dollars each. They usually have a lot of them. You can also check them out from the library for free. You can also download movies and videos to a tablet before you go.

You can buy DVDs at Walmart.

I agree about downloading to a tablet or laptop. I always keep a couple of "e-books" and at least one movie on my tablet, and a couple in a flash drive, in case the power goes out and I get bored.

Zero DVDs there, I checked.

Downloads can not be placed in a physical location to be shared.

You can download to your laptop and have everyone watch it in your hotel room on the laptop. Not all movies can be downloaded, but if you have Hulu, Amazon Prime, or any Netflix plan that doesn't include ads, you'll have lots of options for downloading.

You /can/ download to a USB but it's a really bad idea, it'll run way too slowly on whatever device you plug it into to play back.

Did you check the "Friends of the Library" rooms? There are two rooms at the Powell Road library, one is inside the library, and the other one is outside just to the left of the library entrance. I have recently seen the DVDs for sale at the outside location, unless they removed them. These rooms are open a 10 am, a hour later than the regular library.

Try Habitat for Humanity Restore, In the past I've got some there "On Sale" to 10 cents each.

Loading up a tablet with movies really is the way to go.

If you have a newer DVD / Blu-ray player with a USB port on it then you can load up movies on a flash drive or external hard drive and play them from there. Your TV may have a USB port that can be used the same way.

I just sold over 400 disks to a guy at Marion Markets. He's selling them for $1ea. Main hallway, all the way to the back....

Kelevision 07-07-2023 06:34 AM

I have a bunch of screener DVD’s from the last couple of years. They have watermarks occasionally. “Property of ( studio name)” around 40 of them

retiredguy123 07-07-2023 06:36 AM

Depending on how long your trip is, why not just check out the DVDs at the library?

The Sumter County Library on Powell Road has DVDs for sale for one dollar. They are at the Friends of the Library section located just to the left outside of the library doors. They also have some at the Friends of the Library room inside the library. I just saw them.

You can also borrow DVDs in the library for free for 10 days with two renewal periods, as long as someone else has not reserved the DVD.

Walmart has big bin for under $5 and people sell on Nextdoor. I download movies and tv shows to my iPad from Amazon prime. Works fine

Hmm, sounds like RAGBRAI. Good luck and have fun! 😁

Yes it's RAGBRAI. This year is the 50th seven day ride across Iowa. 28,000 registered participants.

I did it once and it was fabulous. Have a great ride. Are you doing this on an ebike? If so, what's the longest distance you can go, and what are your nightly charging plans?

VillagerNut 07-08-2023 07:55 AM

Ye’ole thrift store on old Dixie near 441 has a bunch of DVDs. Goodwill‘s carry a bunch of DVDs. Also, the military warriors thrift store on 44 near 301 has a bunch of DVDs.

DrHitch 07-08-2023 08:20 AM

The best way to share a movie etc with a small group is to pre-load the media onto a laptop or micro PC and get a long HDMI cable. You can all sit around a hotel TV and watch together that way.

MrChipster 07-08-2023 08:48 AM

Key Thrift, Restoring Hope Thrift, Bargains and Blessings all have DVD’s very inexpensive

Keefelane66 07-08-2023 08:53 AM

I have a subscription to Apple Music Purchased a program to convert to mp3 and store on phone this way if I am in an area with no cell coverage I can still listen.
Originally we had XM radio but after a cross country trip much of the music is replayed over with no new content similar to over the air radio without commercials

daniel200 07-08-2023 09:33 AM

Marion market has tons of DVD’s for sale. I got rid of all my DVD’s about 10 years ago after loading them all on to a hard drive. I can easily stream any of them to a TV using a google chromecast. Used my chromecast a lot during my travels throughout asia, but rarely do that now that internet streaming is available.

Music is easy to download to a cell phone or even a flash drive. Bluetooth speakers provide music for everyone in the room.

But the OP is asking about DVDs - movies. It's a bit more complicated.

My wife has an ebike, I've found that I just can't match her pace without one. I can go 55 miles on the lowest assistance, we'll just bring a spare. There are charging stations at the nightly stop

Gsorace 07-08-2023 09:56 AM

I have a ton of them you can borrow.

Gsorace 07-08-2023 10:56 AM

Have you tried Goodwill? They usually have a shelf of DVDs and CDs.

bob47 07-23-2023 03:36 PM

30,000 riders on the first day of RAGBRAI this year. Hope you have a great week.

Not complicated at all to plug a chromecast into the tv and cast from the tablet or even a phone.

That would completely depend on the "speed" of the USB device and the device it is being played on. I have no problem watching HD Res and even QHD res on a 6 year old laptop with a $30 USB stick or even an iPad. 4K downloads will sometimes stutter. One can also get a USB portable SSD drive for cheap that works just as well and can hold a load of vids.

One can get a pack of 6 USB drives on Amazon for under $50 that will handle just about anything under 4K native res without issue. The only possible issue is getting the movies to put on them. I try and use "one" rather than "you" because "you" aren't the person looking for the flicks. ;)

retiredguy123 07-24-2023 05:44 PM

I tried to play a movie dvd from an external dvd drive to a tablet, and it didn't work. It works on a Windows laptop because the laptop has the correct media player software, but the tablet does not. I was surprised by that.

WHile I have never tried a DVD player on any Tablet try Downloading VLC from any app store or direct. You might also want to read this: Can you use a DVD player with a tablet?. Seems only to refer to Android.
