Geek Squad and Paypal Phishing expedition?
I received an email this morning with Geek Squad logo thanking me for renewing my membership ($485) via PayPal.
I have no accounts with either. Have never utilized either for any transactions. Of course do not open/respond, then track my credit card accounts. I feel like there should be a place to report such fraud but I am hesitant due to lack of knowledge regarding contact authenticity? Experience/suggestions? __________________________________________________ _ :censored: |
Delete and move on. Reporting fraud to the Government is a waste of time and taxpayer money. They won't do anything but to ask Congress for more taxpayer money to handle more fraud reports.

We have been receiving so many emails telling us our credit card has been suspended, PayPal account needs updating, Netflix account, which we don't have, is going to be cancelled, etc. We have to be getting 5 or more emails every day like this.
|
Considering BB is less than $200, would be a red flag
|
I feel left out I don’t get these phishing emails unless I look in my junk folder.

Contact Geek Squad, they should have a way to forward these types of emails, and they have a vested interest in shutting these down.
|
I used to get the geek squad payment emails all the time through my gmail account. Just report the email as phishing - I had to do it one time and never received any more geek stuff. If you are getting them via your hotmail or outlook account, just delete and block. It might take 2-3 weeks, but soon you won’t see any more billing emails.
|
I get a few with Gmail and Hotmail, never had any in my Yahoo account.

For PayPal spam: To report a suspicious email or website, forward it to phishing@paypal.com

Phishing
I have a PayPal account. Every once in a while I get an email with the official PayPal email telling me I owe money for bitcoin purchase. I called PayPal told me to foreward email to phishing@paypal.com. They immediately send me a response telling me to delete and they are working on security.
|
Those phishing emails might also contain a telephone number written in tiny lettering in case you have questions about the invoice. According to Paypal, those scammers want you to call that number, it's the entire objective of the phishing email. Don't call the number. If you want confirmation the email is bogus, you can call Paypal (use the number on their website, not the email) or just report it by sending it to the Paypal address someone previously provided.

I get these too. Just ignore them ,

Most of the snail mail I get nowadays is junk mail. While they aren't quite the same as phishing emails, they aren't that different. In the end, they all want what I have. I spend several minutes at the mailbox sorting through my mail to discard the junk mail. In my email mailbox, I mark the unwanted emails as junk. It's just the way it is.

They are still funding the DO-NOT-CALL list for thousands of dollars per year. A completely worthless program that obviously should be cancelled. Most Government fraud reporting programs cost the taxpayers way more money in salaries and administration than they could ever hope to pay back with fraud prevention and prosecutions. But, Congress will keep funding these "feel good" programs as long as they can fool people into thinking that they are worth the cost. |
Roll your cursor across any doubtful mail. The address will confirm spam.
|
I've gotten those emails for over a year now. That's what the delete button is for!

You know that you can go into your email and setup rules to handle incoming emails. For example, if you don’t have/use paypal, setup a rule that if an incoming email subject line contains ‘PayPal’, delete it or move it to your junk folder. Then every so often look over your junk folder

As others said...delete and move on. We got something similar but from a virus company. They want you to click and answer the questions so they can get your personal information. They'll come back again as someone else but keep deleting them!!!

Fake "from" info
[QUOTE=billethkid;2232822]I received an email this morning with Geek Squad logo thanking me for renewing my membership ($485) via PayPal.
I have no accounts with either. Have never utilized either for any transactions. Of course do not open/respond, then track my credit card accounts. I feel like there should be a place to report such fraud but I am hesitant due to lack of knowledge regarding contact authenticity? Experience/suggestions? __________________________________________________ _ Regardless of the LOGO or the "name" in the "From" field, it's highly unlikely that the sender was who they pretend to be. "Point" your cursor to the sender info on top of the email to see the email address that your reply would go to if you were to do so. (On mine I have to click on a little down-arrow to display the actual address.). You'll see the address that the sender wants your reply to go. DELETE is the only solution. |
My inbox rarely receives junk mail. However a look at my gmail “spam” folder shows purported messages from: Dell, TJMAX, Wells Fargo, T-Mobile, CVS, Banco Bradesco, Sams Club, McAffee Services etc. etc.
ALL of these are phishing emails. I do not spend 3 seconds a month worrying about these emails (other than occasionally deleting the spam folder contents) If some spam makes it to my inbox, I just report it as junk. This moves it to the Spam folder and alerts google that I consider this spam. Google uses this feedback to adjust your spam filtering. My advice: do not click on these emails. Just ignore and delete. Nothing bad is going to happen by failure to click. Bad stuff starts to happen if you click. |
Scam!

Rather than complaining to a Federal agency, I would suggest reporting this to your US congressmen and senator. These guys are responsible for enacting laws to make life safe. They get a free ride if no one complains. They are more likely to care if they hear from many (but don’t hold your breath).

Pay has a spoof@paypal.com but just ignore that. I get that email monthly!!! I go to paypal just to check and see there are no scam things on there!
