Mattress recommendation-back pain, shoulder pain
Not sure where this post should go but here seems about as good as any.
I need a new mattress. I'm a side sleeper with scoliosis and i have been waking up with shoulder pain. I cant have a mattress that breaks down in the middle. I haven't found any good reviews on any mattress. I'm even thinking of making my own mattress but not sure any of the latex padding found on the market is worth doing so. Any recommendations? |
Have you tried Certo? It's an old home remedy. Certo is fruit pectin used for making jam and jelly. It's in the canning isle.
Mix 2 teaspoons of Certo in 3 ounces of grape juice. Take it 3 three times a day. It comes in a foil pouch and is the texture of honey. Keep unused in the refrigerator. It will thicken when cold. You don't need the grape juice, but it muffles the taste of Certo and makes it easier to take. I know it sounds crazy, but it can't hurt and it doesn't cost much. Try it for 10-14 days. See if it helps. |
FINALLY FOUND THE REAL DEAL.... Saatva Classic .
Absolutely works Great FOR ME. Tried .............Regular Coil Spring ........................... NOPE ...........................Temper Pedic........ Somewhat Better .........................................Sleep Number DANG..... That was NICE Then a Friend Suggested the>>>>>>> SAATVA CLASSIC......... WOWZER... OPTED FOR THE 15 INCH DEPTH ... MEDIUM FIRM ... No longer have Back or Shoulder Pain I Also am a Side Sleeper. The REAL Temper Pedic and the REAL Sleep Number are happily used in Guest Bedrooms. BY THE WAY... The Saatva Classic has been Voted the Best Mattress for 2023 |
We are huge fans of 100% latex mattresses. We have the same setup at both of our homes and notice a big difference when we travel and have to sleep on anything else. Our beds have 3 layers of latex mattresses, one each medium, firm, and extra firm. You can play with the layering configuration to get the firmness that fits you best. The mattresses are very heavy, so you need a heavy duty bed frame with a solid bottom to support them. No box spring required. Good luck with your search.

Here's where mattresses from Costo shines.
Pick your mattress, they deliver, they take your old one with no cost to you. My son bought one at a great price. Their dog had a accident on it almost to the year. He called Costo for a replacement, no question asked. |
We went a couple of months ago to OriginalMattress F actory on highway 27 and got one of their medium (not too firm, not too soft) rated at a 56 on their scale as I recall. Heavy duty springs. A tad too firm so my wife got a topper (link below). I love it, she does too (and that's what mostly counts anyway). I have bad back issues and this has helped tremendously. Good luck, mattresses are a tough topic.

I too am a side sleeper who had shoulder pain but I found it was not the mattress but the pillow. I got this Eli and Elm pillow and it made a big difference

I am a side sleeper and went to a chiropractor for back pain. I mentioned to him that I thought I needed a new mattress. He responded it is most likely not the mattress. Instead put a pillow between the knees at night. I purchased a knee pillow at Kohls. Back problems completely went away. I don't know about shoulder pain.

I have the Layla and love it. It has two side, one side soft and flip side is little more firm. I have have it for 4 years and it is still like new. I do rotate it every six months

SleepNumber was the perfect solution for us. I have osteoporosis and osteoarthritis in my hips and spine, and degenerative disk disease in my lower spine. I sleep all over the place, back, side, other side, stomach. But I sleep well, and whenever one of my joints is bothering me I can adjust the firmness to accommodate the change with the touch of a button on the remote. Another great thing is that it's super light-weight, so changing the linens is easy and stress-free. Lastly, hubby gets the firmness he likes on his side, while I get what I like on mine. And it's just a queen, not a split king. They sell those too but they're hella expensive. We have a lower-end model, the C4.

My chiropractor recommended the same thing, a thin pillow between the legs when on the side and then put it under the knees/thighs when on the back. Also use a chiroflow water filled pillow to support my always sore neck. The neck pillow is a game changer for someone like me who has managed to fracture vertebrae in my neck on a couple occasions. |
I also have scoliosis and shoulder and neck pain. I highly recommend Saavta! They deliver with white gloves! Read the reviews.

A Great Mattress for Older Backs

One person's perfect mattress is another person's nightmare. Here's what works for my wife and me. We purchased a Sleep Number bed some 10 years ago. We didn't get the top of the line, but one in the middle of the line. Each sides firmness can be set individually. She likes it like a board, I like it like a hammock. I used to have back issues after a night's sleep. But after purchasing the Sleep Number mattress/bed and adjusting to my comfort, I've had no issues. Their technology works, and their product is top notch. The mattress does not lose it's setting over time.

For the shoulder pain
I sleep on my left side, left arm under the pillow. I developed pain in the upside shoulder, the right one. I realized, while I was sleeping, my right arm "drooped" down and rested on the mattress, putting the right shoulder in a strained position. I started tucking a thick pillow against my chest so the right arm could rest on it, preventing the shoulder from dropping down. It made all the difference. I also use a pillow between the knees. My hubby teases that I'm "building my fort"!

Sleep number

Sleep number mattress grows mold. However youtube pulled down all the videos of customers showing this. At one time you could see a lot of videos on the topic on YouTube.

Tempur Pedic
My wife had to have a steel rod put in her back when she was about 12 years old due to severe scoliosis. She hadn't been able to sleep on her left side for the next 50 years. We were furniture shopping for a new home purchase and walked by the Tempur Pedic display. When I saw the prices I kept walking, but my wife, out of curiosity, laid down on one of the mattresses. She rolled over to her left side and was amazed that she felt no pain. Of course that high price was worth it for her (finally) painless sleeping.
They make several models, there is a hybrid one that we also bought for our seasonal home, less expensive, but it's also working ok for her. |
If you decide to look at Sleep Number beds, you might also want to check out Relax in Comfort in Sumter Landing. Less expensive and more versatile in the areas that count. And GREAT service after the sale.

Sleep Number is adjustable and great. Have had ours over 15 years. The newer ones are loaded with too much stuff. Ask about their S1, S2,, or S3. We'll be ordering one of those soon for our guest room. It's their simplest and least expensive line but comes closest to what we have and like - no sagging either. Good luck!

I bought an adjustable bed from The Original Mattress Factory at 934 Bichara Blvd about 2 years ago. I love it! I don't want to get out of bed in the morning, and love taking naps. Some people don't read or watch TV in bed, but for me it's my guilty pleasure. I even use the zero gravity setting to sleep, which some find awkward, but I like it. I have scoliosis too, and lots of back problems, but now find it easy to sleep on my back. |
Best Mattress Ever
Find a Beautyrest Jennings Mattress. Not only is it a beautiful mattress, once you sleep on it, you will never want to sleep on any other. It’s a bit pricey but worth every penny.
A friend of mine just house sat for me and slept in that bed. The next day she called Mattress Firm to see if they carried it. They do! Hope this helps you. Quote:

I haven't been able to sleep on a mattress for 1 - 2 decades. Now I sleep in a recliner; that works for me.
|
I also have the Saatva classic. Am a side sleeper with scoliosis. My chiropractor in Chicago recommended it. Had it in our Chicago home for about 8 months before we moved to TV full time and boy did I miss it when we were here! It has been wonderful for me.

Out of millions of people who've used SleepNumber, there might be a few dozen people who set theirs up with wet hands, or tried to wipe it down with a moist towel before putting the bumpers on it, and so of course yes it will grow mildew. If you follow the directions, there's no problem with mold or mildew. |
I have similar problems. Get a TULO mattress from Matress Firm. Our King cost only $450 and is the best mattress we ever had. Memory foam words.

I hope the OP has a lot of money. So far, 15 different mattresses have been recommended on this thread.
Consumer Reports, which is supposed to be an independent product testing and rating company, rates the Avocado Green mattress as the best. I had never heard of it. Does anyone have one? I would like to upgrade my mattress, but I am very confused by all the ads and claims. I have been sleeping on an el cheapo mattress that I bought from City Furniture 7 years ago, and it still seems fine. |

When we moved to TV almost 2 years ago we purchased a Sleep Number mattress and platform (box spring). Ours is second to the top of the line and we are very happy with it. Sleep number has a test bed you can lay on and see your “hot spots” and what number eliminates those. In other words you’ll find out if you neeed a soft or firm mattress. In the past we have had natural latex mattresses from Foam Source in Boulder, Colorado and those are great as well but are very heavy. Good luck. |

Regarding the individual who reported using a pillow to support her arm, I also use a small thick pillow to support my right arm. Works great to relieve the tendinitis in the upper arm. |
Anecdote

I don't like sleeping with my arms at my side nor sleeping with a pillow between my knees nor not being able to sleep on my stomach at all anymore, but these concessions allow me to live with considerably less pain. Any "firm enough" mattress seems to get the job done. Fascinating thread, though. :-) |
Mattress
I have the same problem and years ago i purchased a Schiffman mattress. Hand made in NJ. Very expensive but none better.
