Hi Mike, which antenna did you buy/install

ThirdOfFive 07-10-2023 10:23 AM

Impressive. We cut the (satellite) cord a couple of years before we moved here. Bought an $80 antenna from Fleet Farm, installed it and could pull in something like 40 stations (more, depending on weather and time of day). Most as clear or clearer than with DirecTV.

tophcfa 07-10-2023 10:26 AM

Thanks, we get the same but I have never taken the time to put together a channel listing. I will print this out and keep it handy.

I use the Channel Master CM4228 antenna with a CM-7779HD Preamp. The antenna was out of stock for a while except from places which would greatly over charge. Anyway, it is back in stock now.

I've gotten about 128 channels over night but haven't taken the time to analyze them as most appear to be the same as I already get from Orlando. Also they disappear during the day. I'm told this is common this time of year.

Where do you have the antenna mounted? Are you using a antenna rotor?

Pointed toward the Orlando towers.
I was able to point it with my neighbor's house on the left & some trees on the neighbor's right so it has a long open area towards Orlando.

From reviews I've seen, I could be wrong, it has a wide UHF direction because it is basically 8 uhf cat whiskers. The reflector is not really a uhf reflector but is tuned to hi-vhf and the cat watcher picks up the hi-vhf because it is stronger from the reflector. Again, I could be wrong.

Thank you, Mike,
Nice to see the old days roof antenna options are still kicking..
But I couldn't live on those channels only...

Not on the roof but on a mask on the GROUND and braced against the building with a wall mount. Most if not all outdoor antennas I seen in TV are installed that way.

How high up is your antenna? I'm in the north end too and mine got ABC the first day it was installed, and nothing since. It's also headed towards Orlando.

Ellwoodrick 07-11-2023 05:33 AM

My wife and I have a home in the Northern end on the Marion County side. I am looking at tiring an Antenna with amp in the Attic. Has anyone had any luck with that?

JoelJohnson 07-11-2023 06:23 AM

Not sure why someone would point their antenna toward Orlando, when the transmitters are in Melbourne.

Hi La lami, you were one of the first people who replied when I started my antenna research last year. Are you still using the LAVA Omni Pro HD-8008 antenna? Is ABC the only channel you lost? Anyway, mine is installed on a pushup mast with a max height of 28 feet. However the mask is mounted in cement a little over a foot below grade & not extended to the full height. The top on the antenna is about a foot or so above the roof peak but the antenna is over 3 feet tall. I think the center of the antenna is about 20 feet above the ground. I'll get a better estimate later.

MikeVillages 07-11-2023 07:08 AM

I thought a posted a link to the antenna I'm using but here it is now.

I've been too lazy to sit down and type of this list while scanning the channels. We live in mid-Villages area and receive all the channels via an antenna in our attic. Thanks for doing this!

JGibson 07-11-2023 08:12 AM

I bet the picture quality is crystal clear and not compressed like cable.

I canceled cable and just have ESPN+ Peacock which includes live local NBC channel and Paramount + which includes live CBS channel.

All for $20 a month.

I recall getting 7 stations in NYC and 3 at my home outside the city. Times have changed. People with a smart TV can also pull in local countrywide stations by going to live TV on the screen. It has hundreds of stations in addition to dozens of music stations.

I installed the coax grounding block & I grounded the mast. Some of TV homes where people invited me to take a look when I was doing my research did not have this. This is the easiest & cheatest thing to do when the antenna is installed on the utility side of the home.

Yes, the picture is sharper even with the same resolution than cable, especially the new NextGen ATSC 3.0 channels.
I was thinking of getting Paramount + while doing my research when I first moved here last year but was too busy.

Guess I need a seminar to attend or something. The wifey has tried to explain the differences between our older and newer "smart" TV's. Understanding the concepts of "dashboard" and "menu" and "home screen" would likely help. She sez it's to do with buttons or keys. Too scary. I need hierarchies or outlines or something like that.

Never mind. She just explained that DVR fast-forwarding is lost with all these other options. Deal killer.

If you are pointing that at Orlando stations, they would be 60+ miles straight line distance. Might push the limits.

That said I live in DeSoto, Fenny area, and put a large (8 foot) Long Range UHF- HDTV 91 Element Yagi Antenna (Amazon) in my attic and paired it with a Winegard LNA-200 Boost XT HDTV Preamplifier (Amazon). I get all the channels the original poster does.

The large Yagi antenna has the best UHF gain going, which are almost all of the stations you want to watch. Also, I connected the pre-amp once the cable exits the attic and goes into my garage. I was concerned that mounting it on the antenna itself in the attic would fry it in the summer with 130+ degree heat. Doing it that way doesn't appear to have any detrimental effects on signal strength. 3+ bars out of 5 on almost every channel.

I'm sure you would get something with my type of set up, though some stations might fade during storms. Very important, you need to have as little immediately between you and your direction to the transmitters as possible. You already have the attic roof to go through. A tree or another house/rest of your house will have an impact. Also, can't have a foil barrier in your attic.

Use an internet site like antennaweb.org to get the direction to point your antenna from your address, and to let you know what you might expect as far as reception.

Good luck! Between my antenna and a few internet services like Netflix and Amazon, and all of the free stuff on Roku, I have plenty to watch. And way less than cable/satellite.

bobchap 07-11-2023 12:46 PM

Check this web site before you purchase an antenna!

If you are thinking of trying an antenna for your TV follow the link below. When you put in your address it will give you an idea of what stations might be available to you at your location.

AntennaWeb - Antenna Signal Prediction

HJBeck 07-11-2023 01:43 PM

I've checked antennaweb.com for my address near 466a and it did not predict very good results. Are you using an antenna extension on your roof? We are not allowed to put antenna's on the roof in our area restrictions. Just wondering!

Actually, antenna.org is extremely pessimistic and only shows three stations for my location, all in different directions.
DTV Reception Maps | Federal Communications Commission
Is a lot better as it shows 25 stations, some in different directions.
Neither one gives sub-channels. You can look at the first post to get an indication of the number of sub-channels.

I have an antenna mounted on a pole outside from the ground up I think it's 20 feet? Unfortunately the coax needs to be replaced. I'm using a Firestick and the Kodi app and get TV stations from around the globe. In Boston I had a yagi quad Similar to the antenna in the link below installed on my roof and could pull in stations from CT on a good day, and parts of VT, Northern NH, RI and Maine.

A quad yagi television antenna is interesting & not very common.

I assume because you could only find something "similar", your antenna has horizontal elements not vertical. Correct? Also, the similar antenna is only UHF. Most television stations in our market use UHF but some like 2.1 WESH (NBC), 2.2 MeTv, and 2.3 Story, use high VHF and should be different to pickup with an UHF only antenna.

The antenna I'm using has 8 UHF antennas. I wasn't too interested at first because it did not have high VHF. However after seeing this antenna in action & reviews explaining why it also works for hi-VHF, I decided to get it.

My UHF Yagi pulls in Channel 2 with no problem. It is consistently 4 out of 5 bars on my TV's signal strength indicator. I did have issues back when I was trying to get a Low VHF channel (6) when I lived outside of Philly. Nothing I did would get that to come in.

And yes, Antenna Web doesn't even find my address. I can just put in the zip code, however, and it will show what is available. I always set it for "Antenna will be 30 feet". Mine is only about 10 feet, in the attic, and I get all of the channels they note at 30 feet. It helps that Florida is flat as a pancake.

Of course, your mileage may vary, as TV signals are finicky things.

Read your dead restrictions again. Mine basically say antennas are banned to the extent the law allows them to be banned. Federal law states other governments, dead restrictions, and any entity other than federal law CANNOT FORBID or even require pre-approval of television antennas. Federal law has the only say for outdoor televisions antennas

You should have no problem following the federal television antenna law.

All true. That said, I chose to go the attic route because it gets everything and no one can see it. Also, no need for a tall pole/roof mount, and it is protected from wind and rain.

While most outdoor antennas here look fine (to me) there is one visible on the third hole of LowLands course. Looks like the leaning tower of Pisa, at least the last time I played there.

In the Villages, you should not need a rotor. There isn't anything in Ocala that you can't get out of Orlando. For me, AntennaWeb puts me on an azimuth of about 110 degrees towards Orlando/Melbourne. Set it, and locked it down. Done.
