Public Mentality

Ok, so why would vacationers in Death Vally California want to stand around taking
pictures of themselves with park rangers in front thermometers showing 132 degrees at visitor centers.

That extreme heat is a earthly crisis by many, not a reason to celebrate.

Do I need to do a better job when planning my vacation?

Keefelane66 07-18-2023 12:07 PM

Just for some to say they were there when it happened. Traveled there once never going back.

Tom52 07-18-2023 12:43 PM

Same reason tourists take their picture at the top of Pike's Peak by the sign showing the elevation.

Better job than what?

Same reason they take selfies with wild animals.

That's not extreme heat for them. 100 years ago July 10th of 1913 the temperature in Death Valley hit 134 degrees. Dropped 2 degrees in 100 years maybe that's why they were posing for the photo.

If you live in Southern California and drive to Vegas you go through Death Valley. There’s a huge thermometer there encouraging picture taking. It’s the hottest place on earth, so they say. Why would you NOT take a picture?

MisterPratt 07-19-2023 06:59 AM

Respectfully, why do you care?

Perhaps. They are checking a bucket list item. Not an issue to me. To each his/her own.

I guess

Because it's easier and cheaper to travel to Tunisia that gets just as hot.

Post #7, 111 degrees? Jail time or serious fine for captain and airline/airport (IMHO).

Why do people post questions to TOTV, that have nothing to do with anything relevant to anyone other then themselves... and every single day?

No

Same could be said for a bunch of old retired people standing out on the golf course in 95° heat a 90° dewpoint, and 95% humidity:mornincoffee:

Not much else to do in Death Valley, I suppose...

The road from Los Angeles to Las Vegas (Interstate 15) does not go through Death Valley. The thermometer you are talking about is in Baker, CA, 100 miles south of Death Valley.

Taltarzac725 07-19-2023 11:08 AM

Death Valley temperature, weather: Heat draws visitors to park

I have been to Death Valley but only because I needed to get to what was on the other side.

Now venturing to the coldest place on earth or the deepest would be a lot a harder as would the highest.

Rwirish 07-19-2023 12:03 PM

What’s wrong with taking a picture? It was cooler in 1913.

No you don't go thru Death Valley from SoCal to Vegas.

Look at a map.

It's also not the hottest place on earth.

It's not true. Outside temp was 111.

But people like to be outraged.

Chi-Town 07-19-2023 02:19 PM

It's interesting to see a cllck bait thread go from who cares to the route from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and swerve to airplane temperatures (inside or out). More to come.

Some years ago my husband and I were crossing the country on our motorcycle. We were in Las Vegas in late August because those were my vacation days. I wanted to see Death Valley, we were so close! My husband said, no, not even at night, as he put cold wet towels on the seat of the motorcycle to cool it down so we could sit on it at 8:00 am in the morning.
He knew what he was saying.

I think some people can just overestimate their ability to cope with something. Find out the consequences later.

Likely because they feel like it. When you take pictures of things why do you do it?

Good question! Those of us over a certain age would be perplexed at the behavior of people today, like standing in Death Valley 🏜 at the highest recorded temperature s ever! That’s exactly why people are doing this! To be seen at the place where a new world record is being made, and to be be seen doing it!
