Repainting My Driveway

I got an estimate to repaint my driveway. $4000. That seems high for a two car and golfcart driveway with no graphic, considering I just paid $3800 to have my entire house painted. Has anyone done it and what did it cost? Any recommendations? I'm in the dark and don't want to be taken advantage of.

Thanks

dewilson58 07-19-2023 05:23 AM

Get a couple more estimates.

+1

Be sure they use an antislip additive (SharkGrip).

retiredguy123 07-19-2023 06:59 AM

Getting multiple estimates should be standard procedure for almost any project at your house.

Without knowing the details, it sounds like the estimate includes grinding off the old finish which is typically required and almost doubles the cost of the project. IMHO, to get a quality finish, one that will last, the old finish needs to be completely removed. Be very cautious of any company that claims to be able to simply repaint over the old finish. I actually did this accidentally and 2 years later the new finish was failing due to the old finish failing.
Check exactly what the first estimate included.

We had ours done for $3100 recently. He didn't grind off the old finish but he did repair some spots that had started crumbling near the street and around one of the carport pillars. That section needed repair because we'd bumped into the pillar a few times when we were first learning how to maneuver the driveway in a golf cart.

Our driveway is double-wide, plus an open car port where we keep our two golf carts. So we have four vehicles on it all the time. Plus a small 5x5 square of concrete leading up to the wooden deck.

He power-washed, chipped off bits that the washer missed, repaired the crumbling, painted with some kind of epoxy-based paint, did another layer, added this sparkly stuff that gave it a granite finish, and then clear-coated the whole thing with another two layers. The sparkly stuff also makes it non-slip, which is a huge change from how it was before.

For another $400 I think he said, he'll come back every year and power wash and clear-coat it, to preserve all the work he did this year.

I haven't spent any money on my bare concrete driveway, and it still looks beautiful to me.

Raywatkins 07-20-2023 04:26 AM

We used Harold who has a stall at Markets of Marion.
That was about 4-5 years ago and it still looks good.
He put a base layer down and then over painted in a multi coloured small dot pattern.
It cost us around $900 for that job. We were so impressed that we had him come back and paint right through the garage. He charged the same price.
He may look old but he knows his stuff and does a great job.
What really impressed was that he tested the concrete first to see if paint would adhere and last. He advises you before about any potential problems there might be. In our case he told us all was good.
His price may have gone up but I doubt it’s near the figure you quote. If you mail me, I can give you our address and you can drive by and have a look yourself.

EXACTLY! It’s a DRIVEway. I can think of MUCH better ways to part with my hard-earned $4000 than painting something my car sits on. I don’t get it?!?

$3800 is outrageously high to have a house painted. Recently had my house painted (base color plus two accent colors) for $1600.

Thanks, that's good to know. It is what the company said they would do.

Just keeping things shipshape. The finish that was there when we bought the house 6 years ago is starting to show wear.

Kathe 07-20-2023 06:55 AM

I had mine done with my custom design. 2 car with full length golf cart driveway. $3000 cash.

Some contractors not wanting to a particular job will intentionally over price the work. Getting more bidders is the way to go.
Good luck.

Just got an estimate from B+D Concrete Creations........3950. 352-455-9614

Yes, cost to take off old paint included but does raise the number

Looked around at Painted driveways and found one that was excellent.

Called Custom Ram for an estimate, they are 1 month out on estimates and 15 months out on work, artist comes to house and creates a painted driveway for you with you

expect the cost to be around 5,000, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, first impressions are important, if interested in Custom Ram Google them, find some of the painters works whoever you get.........and thats as sure as stone/concrete

Reading the posts made me think why we call it a driveway. We park on a driveway, and drive on a parkway. I think I heard this from someone like forty years ago (George Carlin maybe(?).) Oh yeah, a freeway is rarely free. I think that is all.

Hi there. We are actively getting quotes to paint our house. This is a very low price. Do you mind sharing your painters name and number please? What brand of paint did they use?

Thanks!

I would suggest you call B & D Concrete Creations. Did a fabulous job on our driveway (2 car garage) 3 years ago for $950. Spoke with Romaldo (owner) today to have him do my garage floor. His number is (352)455-9614

Emerson Concrete Creations $1500 two years ago. My driveway is just a two car. Estimates are fast but he is booking a few months out.

Something to think about what driveways are for.

Some driveways around me are WAY over the top with a design and takes
away the looks of the house.

The same. Our driveway had been painted by the previous owner. It was a nice color so when it started showing wear, we tried to get the same color. But that color wasn't available. So we selected something close. Unfortunately, the guy who did it for us, was one of those "handymen" who do odd jobs, aren't insured, or licensed, cash only, and not particularly good at the job. He did okay. But he didn't do okay - thoroughly. He missed some spots, didn't use a decent sealer, and the finish was very slippery when wet.

So almost two years later, we sucked it up and got the whole thing re-done. The new guy specializes in driveways and custom paint decoration. He gave us a quote, we dickered just a little bit, he accepted our counter, and he got to work the following week. He returned to apply the sealant a few days later. A few days after that, the day it should've been driveable, he told us he wasn't satisfied that it was sealed enough, and he added another layer of sealer. No charge - he was just being a perfectionist. Which we appreciated. He also wouldn't allow us to pay him for ANY of the work until he was finished, and we were satisfied with the work.

Good point, also good to not go crazy with colors, using the same colors as the house helps blend the driveway in.

Also, do you need a permit to redo a driveway?

You're supposed to get arc approval for any change in color/texture/design as far as I know. I don't think you need anyone's approval to refresh the existing color or re-seal it.

Need to check, Arc approval is required in some CCD but not others.

When it doubt, call, or even walk into the ARC office - great people, easy to work with, and gives you “peace of mind” - If anyone would ever even try to file a complaint against you, ARC would first see if you had your work approved by them, and if so, then the complaint process stops right there.

Good advise.

FYI - At least in my case, they did not check an erroneous complaint first. Seems you're guilty until proven innocent...

But it did result in a quick "nevermind" when I called.

Spot on. A driveway IMHO is still just a driveway. Our first house in FL we spent $$$ to “paint” it and seal it, etc. We only made that mistake once. But to each his own.

We found new concrete is more porous and absorbs a lot of stains that are hard to remove.
We sealed ours and now everything wipes right off.

Just had my single & golf cart drive and walkway to the house done in March and it was $1700 with edge design and star in middle.
Can't imagine if it would cost 1300 more for another driveway. Worth the call.

Same here, especially with the driveway covering half the front yard.

Much of the concrete around here is blotchy and looks like hell.

A neighbor pressure washed their drive and exposed some of the aggregate.

And then someone parked a cart that dripped acid on the drive...

Painting it and a simple border the colors of the house makes it easy to clean and blends in nicely.

Would a typical painted driveway have protected the driveway from acid? I thought you needed a epoxy coating for that.

I don't clean my driveway, but I don't think it looks like hell. If it gets stained, the stain usually disappears over time.
