Burning Man

Are there any Villages that attend Burning Man? Would like to connect/network with experienced burners and learn the basics for our first burn in 2024. Thx.

This thread is just plain funny! I think though that Burning Man is a bit challenging for a lot of Villagers, for example:

“Oh yeah, and there are no showers in Burning Man, only communal toilets to use. If you need to shower, rent an RV but trust me, you'll be covered in dust again in minutes. Don't fight the dust, just embrace it.”

Not gonna happen.

One of the Founders of Burning Man has two brothers who live in The Villages. They can enlighten you!!

Whitley 08-09-2023 07:15 AM

I assume you mean are there any Villagers that attend; Have a great time. Grab life by the ... throat. Are you planning on driving there, or fly then rent a camper to drive?

Two Bills 08-09-2023 07:28 AM

Had to look Burning Man up.
Thought it was something like the film The Wicker Man.

Good for you! Have a great time. I used to live in Reno and remember the first one in Nevada.
To the rest of the Geritol, 1 foot in the grave crowd here on TOTV remember the villages is just a lifestyle, and not your home.......and time moves on. It's good to see younger people moving in and displacing the "what was".

spexdr 08-09-2023 08:18 AM

Lotto

Last I heard it has gotten so popular that they hold a lottery for attendance. Good luck!

I have a friend who went to the last one and had a blast. But most of my friends are in their 30's and 40's. Not my cuppa, I prefer 1970's rock and 1980's hair bands. And Green Day. Nirvana was okay I guess. New Wave, some of the earlier punk before it got violent, heavy metal (which oddly enough isn't nearly as violent as some think or remember it being). Some Justin Timberlake, Seal, and other pop stuff. And Bach. Always Bach. I guess I'm just not much into the alt-rock or mosh pit scene.

virtualcynthia 08-09-2023 10:13 AM

Did they get the idea from Woodstock that we “Geritols” attended?

I'm a "late-boomer." Born near the end of my generation in 1961 (Boomer gen ended in 1964-1965). Woodstock was before my time, and my parents were already settled in their house with their picket fence in the white middle-class suburbs of Connecticut when Woodstock happened.

But what I /did/ have, was southern rock festivals, Dead concerts, folk festivals all over New England. We were our own pseudo-hippie generation, where we ran around in our gauze midi-dresses, barefoot on the grass, getting rained on, wearing patchouli oil, drinking out of wineskins or sloshing beer all over each other to the beat of Molly Hatchett.

Good times. I think Burning Man took the concept to a whole other level. Good for them, I say! Every generation needs their time to shine, their festive celebration of the chaotic joy of life.

Absolutely.
We wrecked Cinemas, to Bill Haley's 'Rock around the Clock.'
Seemed a good idea at the time!

I watched a special/documentary many years ago. It’s very intriguing. Try IMDB.com, I think that’s the one called Spark: the burning man story.

If you find a few dozen villagers who can design and assemble a 100 foot long manned rolling centipede and drive it to Nevada let me know. Only 24 days left!

If you're thinking about going to Burning Man I would suggest going with a motor home.I had this on my bucket list and did it in 2008. One wild time for sure. Just watching all of the folks who show up is unreal.

I’ve often wondered if there were any other “ burners” in the Villages, too. Yeah, I went once; back in 2015; ( can’t believe it’s been that long ago) actually attended with my son. Bucket list thing for me and I’m glad I went. I’d love to talk to you about.

"Are there any Villages that attend Burning Man? Would like to connect/network with experienced burners and learn the basics for our first burn in 2024. Thx."

This has been on my bucket list for years, but after seeing the video, I guess I'd better scratch it off.

And here i thought this thread was about a self-immolation at one of the town squares

Why would you scratch it off?

I am curious if the bahaviour in the squares is indicative of each specific generation OR indicative of a groups age. The entertainment seems to only change minutely. Not sure GenX (or even anyone born in the 60's forward) will be as satisfied as the Boomers are with the current set-up. Not thinking it will necessarily become folks on molly swaying to Peter Gabrielle. Maybe it will? -OR- if it is indicative of ones age, perhaps it will stay exactly as it is. Would be kind of interesting seeing a mosh pit at LSL.

I can hear the “plop” as the jumper hits the ground (in my mind’s ear) since most people are too old to catch them.

There sure were as I can attest to. An interesting comparison to the Burning Man video.

I'd give BM a second look - and then pass

manaboutown 09-04-2023 06:07 PM

Reading this reminded me of Woodstock where I had been invited to go with some friends but declined. They ended up stuck in mud up there. Burning Man road reopens, allowing festival-goers to escape muddy mess | Reuters

I went hunting back in the mid 1970s with a friend/co-worker of my Dad and one of my age kids in that remote area of Nevada. There is NOTHING out there.

It is so barren even the jackrabbits have to bring their lunch.

Thanks for the link; it has satisfied my curiosity.

Looks like a dusty, dirty Woodstock with costumes. Not my cup of tea, but it’s past my time. I’m glad the “kids” that went there had a good time. Gives all attendees something to reminisce about.

I guess I never got what it was until now. There is a very interesting 30 minute or so video about it.

Interesting question, a friend of my son's goes. Lots of Silicon Valley IT people, lots and lots of drugs. Kind of like woodstock for rich geeks. Having said that, it would be interesting to learn more about it.
