Looks more like a cheese-grater than a ship

Stu from NYC 10-27-2023 01:40 PM

We were on it last year and found it to be a very well run ship that despite it size lines were a minimum

Horses for courses.
Would be a total nightmare for me to be cooped up with all those people.
Be like paying to go to prison!

Port Canaveral is the busiest Port in the World? Crazy since most leave out of Ft Lauderdale or Miami.

short Bahama cruises are full of Entry Level Cruisers, that don’t adhere to the Dress Attire.. purple swimsuits in the MDR will be the entertainment for the evening ( I will pay a quarter more and sail with my people)

So you regular cruisers...................are the ships getting "too large"????

manaboutown 10-28-2023 11:08 AM

How many lifeboats does this ship have? I can't imagine how long it would take to abandon ship if necessary although I am certain there are laws, rules and regulations that govern safety standards and the ship meets them. It just looks kind of scary to me due to the large number of passengers it carries. I hope no one yells FIRE!!! in the wrong place at the right time and hundreds of people try to crowd through a single door.

I am not fond of the supersized ships at all. I don't like the hall in front of the elevators jam-packed with people trying to get onto the next one, I'm not fond of having to walk the length of almost three football fields just to get to dinner. Not a fan of seeing 300 lounge chairs surrounding the pool, each of them with a towel on them but only 10 people actually in the pool or at the bar, to remind me of just how many people are inconsiderate and insist on "reserving" chairs that they have no intention of using. Not fond of having to wait 3-people deep just for a seat at the bar. Definitely not happy with wanting to go dancing, the same moment that 600 other people decide they want to go dancing, in a disco that's only built to handle 300 dancers. I don't even bother with the casinos.

I like the smaller ships because there's more a sense of intimacy, less of a sense of a floating shopping mall during the x-mas rush. That also means less stress on the cook staff which results in better quality food.

It's also quicker on and off the ship when it's smaller, so you have more time to spend wherever it is your ship is sailing.

There is an advantage to bigger ships, more stuff to do. RCCL is a bit too large for us at 6000 plus passengers but we do like the larger Princess ships of just under 4000.

Guess we will never meet on a ship than. Oh well.

The Royal Caribbean Oasis class ships basically shut down things at 9pm. It's like the Villages on a boat. If I'm paying for a vacation, I like some options that extend well past midnight like on Carnival cruise ships.

We were on Allure last year and remember they did have some music venues lasting later than 9.

I've been on the Allure twice, along with most of it's sister ships. Yes there are some limited options after 9pm but they are very limited, usually to a disco and the English pub and maybe a late running music venue depending on the night. Makes it feel like a rip off to have one of the beverage packages and see these venues effectively only open for 6 hours per day.

I go to bed no earlier than 1am, so it's only going to be Carnival or Norwegian for me going forward.

rsmurano 10-28-2023 09:54 PM

we've been on many of the RC ships, and we think the Wonder of the Seas is the best, even over the Oasis.

Well, À chacun son goût, as they say.

Those ships are huge, no doubt about it. But the only place it really felt crowded was at the buffet (and the ports of call, which can be a zoo). Otherwise, considering the number of folks on board, there sometimes seems to be a surprising LACK of people. Workout areas and running/walking track seem no more crowded than where we worked out at home. My favorite place on the ship (started on Independence of the Seas and on every ship thereafter) was late at night on the stern of the ship, on the lowest deck to the water. Grab a chair (no problem as I was usually the only one there) sit back and watch the ocean go by. Could do it for hours.

The only place that felt crowded when boarding was the Fort Lauderdale cruise port. Took three hours to drive maybe the 1/2 mile to the ship. Miami was a lot faster and Port Canaveral was a snap. Disembarking can be hectic too: mainly because the system that the cruise line has can be confusing; best just to grab your stuff and head for a door. You might be at the wrong place at the wrong time but they don't send you back, just let you go through.

"large" needs to be defined and it will change again. 800 passenger ships will soon be called "yacht cruising"
