Best dash cams?
Have had 2 close calls lately where the other drivers would have been at fault so I’m considering a dash cam; any recommendations? TIA.
|
I think they’re a great idea!

Have a Garmin in our car.
Simple set up and not complicated to use. Bluetooth, and saves picture automatically minutes before and after if in collision or emergency braking of car. Turns on and off on its own. |
I bought a Redtiger from Amazon and had it professionally installed at BestBuy. It’s a fantastic camera with a ton of features. The 4K video is crystal clear.

I have a RING.
Amazon.com It's expensive, but I've gone through 3 or 4 other cameras. The heat from hanging on the windshield seems to do them in. If it has a suction cup to hold it up, it will fall down on a regular basis. Because it's RING, I only need one app and it controls the doorbell, and indoor cameras. |
I agree with Freehiker
I have a REDTIGER dash cam, and although I haven't captured anything cool yet, I did have a few cars race up on my right to shoot the closing gap between the truck and the next car in the lane to my right, including a motorcycle passing on my left between the truck and the guardrail at like 100 mph. . . no live accidents. . though i put it on quite a bit on local runs in TV. good luck Amazon.com |
A related question...does anyone have recommendations (or even know of) dash/windshield cams for golf carts? Aside from a couple of trips per month the Rav4 sits in the garage w/the golf cart being used routinely.

I have the 4K Rexing with GPS and app access. I bought it direct from Rexing and Geek Squad at Best Buy did the installation. Had Rexing in the old car for the last 3 years.....works fine. Just make sure you know how to take out the card have a quick way to disspose of it in the event the accident is your fault :)

If you can install it a car/suv it can be also installed in golfcart

If only they didn't charge nearly $10 to ship.

I'm glad you suggested this as I've been experiencing close calls as well. Amazon Prime Days are going on now.
Check their deals here: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=dash+came...s_ts-doa-p_4_4 |
I’m sure you are aware that (florida) is a 50-50 state, so it really does not matter who’s fault because your insurance company pays anyway and it will affect your rate. Even when you get rear ended remember, this is not a no-fault state.

Most of the dash cams today are pretty good and will do what you want. I would search online or amazon and see what is available. We have been using one for the past 10 years. Don’t get the least expensive but you don’t need the most expensive either. The one’s that suction cup to the windshield will fall off if you leave your car out in the hot sun for a long time.

Capacitor for the heat
Quote:
I lost another brand dash camera which was a battery type to excessive heat through the windshield. I would look for a camera with a capacitor as they can stand the heat better than a battery. Regarding a golf cart camera, i had one mounted while here for a couple of months, used a cigarette lighter plugin and alligator clip for the camera. It lasted for about 5 weeks but shorted out. I think the extreme vibrations and bumps on a golf cart were the cause. Before it died it did catch an incident. Returned to my cart and noticed the rear seat not closed properly and the blanket which was under there had been moved. Checked the camera later (which was facing to the front). the footage showed the the cart move and vibrate, then a worker walk into view and got into the cart in front of me (cart had gardening equipment on it). If you are going to mount one on a cart I would get a capacitor type and try and mount it in a way that reduces vibration. |

Don't 90% of drivers consider themselves to be safer drivers than average?
It might be better to find a defensive driving course than to buy a camera that might very will be inoperative due to heat in the off chance that it might actually have recorded evidence in your favor, that would not otherwise have been determined by the accident investigation anyway. Or distract you because it came loose and flew across your car while you were driving... |
Don’t involve your insurance company if the person that rear ends you has insurance. Get a police report & handle it yourself
