In need of reviews

My mother is 82 and has major back problems. We (her kids) were talking about getting her a Bidet, hoping it will help make things in the bathroom easier for her back.
No one in the family has one so let the search begin. They go from a simple one for $50 to the Grand Daddy $1000.
If you have one can you please share a review like make, model, cost, and will this help her.
Thank you in advance for all your help.
The one we are considering is TOTO Washlet C2.

Toymeister 12-10-2023 07:45 AM

We've got this one at less than 34.00 it is the bottom of the market. It does not heat the water or have a special spray pattern. It is simple a valve and squirt of focused water jet.

It works well, however when January brings cold water it can give you a bit of a shock. That is only a brief moment in the calendar, though. I would rebuy.

Something to keep in mind (I’m sure you’re already aware), with the Toto Washlet C2), and other high quality bidet seats, you will need to factor in the price of having a GFCI receptacle installed by a licensed electrician.

I never thought I would be talking about this in public, but for your Mother, here goes:

I played around with bidets in European hotels and I did not like them at all, I ended up getting soaked. I have another suggestion you might try. When my husband was in rehab he was given some excellent wet wipes. They are almost the size of a small hand towel and pleasantly lightly scented. I get them now for my grand babies and their Mothers like them, but they are not flushable. They are available on Amazon. Mckesson Staydry disposable wash cloths100 12x7. It is an excellent product.

villagetinker 12-10-2023 09:10 AM

I would check with consumer reports or similar for reviews on these devices. As noted above if you want or need warm water add $200 to $500 for the GFCI installation, also if you still have the pop on/off water valves, this will probably need to be changed. All the ones I saw APPEARED to change the height of the toilet seat, no idea if this would be a concern.

The "Buttler" is a fairly cheap but sturdy alternative bidet!

I installed a Toto for my mother-in-law who also lives in TV. She loves it. My wife decided we needed one, as well. I purchased the Toto C5 from Amazon for $400 and the electrician was $400 for the dedicated GFCI (Pikes electric). No need for hot water inlet as this model warms the water in a receptacle. Also has heated seat, multiple spray and dry modes and a remote. One note of caution: the heated seat has 3 settings and the highest setting will roast your butt!

Jerry and Linda (YouTube channel name: The Villages Florida Newcomers) did a video on this subject, which you may find helpful.

It was uploaded on October 19, 2023. The title is "A MUST SEE VIDEO We Never Thought We'd Make".

I installed one for my wife in the master bath, but it does not heat the water. It has an on and off button, a button for the front and one for the back and a self cleaning button. The knob adjusts the water pressure. It was cheap on Amazon, about $35-40, but she likes it. Recently, she received a fancy one from one of our kids that has a night light, heats the water, etc. Now, I will have to install a wall power outlet so I can plug it in. I'll have to install it in the guest bath, since that is the only place with power close enough that I can run the line to it. The cheap one works fine and she is happy with it. It is a simple DIY project. So easy, I didn't even need to use a youtube video for instruction...:D

That being said, it’s a one and done, and the additional charge, if it helps her even slightly, might easily be worth the cost.

We have a Brondell Swash CL1700 that was a little over $200. Has a nightlight, seat heater, various settings, wall mount controls. Love it. You definitely want a wall mount control - the seat side controls require flexibility to operate.
We just stayed in a penthouse suite at the Bellagio that had a Toto bidet that opened when it sensed you nearby and automatically flushed itself. Value - over $10,000 lol. Hubby is a retired plumber and he had to look it up.

shaw8700@outlook.com 12-10-2023 09:55 PM

We have bought two of them, one of them was bought about twelve years ago, and the was two years later (because we had two bathrooms) and I have to say they were the best purchases of my life. We didn’t buy the cheap ones; we paid about $800. Well worth it.

Some that say they are flushable shouldn’t be flushed, as they don’t dissolve very well, which means they could get stuck in pipes. How can you tell? Put one in a kettle of water, wait an hour, and give it a stir. Does it break into particles? Toilet paper does that in a minute. Kleenex in a couple minutes. Wet wipes? Well, possibly not.

Those gadgets had long sounded intriguing but I had never run across one until moving into our place here in May. Before I could get up my nerve and run a controlled test with one of our new-to-us gadgets, that "handle" was somehow accidentally bumped. Would never have guessed that there would be such a "jet" involved. I think I felt it all the way up into my throat. Am now afraid that it could someday happen again, so find myself kind of sneaking up on the throne these days.

TorriJ 12-11-2023 05:43 AM

I have the Luxe Neo185 in all my bathrooms. No heater. No electric needed. I installed them myself and my husband was impressed. Almost every guest we have had has gone home and purchased one for themselves.

The Toto Washlet is the best in the industry, but I don’t think she needs it. The Neo185 will take care of her needs.

Personally, I like the Veken Bidet Attachment for Toilet.
Dual sprayer front/back her/him ..
Adjustable nozzel pressure and angle.
Easy install. Not heated. (have never felt the need (pun)).
$45 on Amazon

Mt wife had an operation 6 years ago that went south and she ended up in a wheelchair. I bought a Bio Bidet 2000 I had to have an outlet install near the tank, but it was the best investment I ever made. This thing does everything short of washing the dishes. Besides the cleaning is has an enema setting, a dryer, plus a setting for back and front. During the pandemic we hardly used and toilet paper at all.
My wife passed recently, and I've start to use it, when it dies, I will install a new one.

I have the Brondell Swash non-electric Ecoseat that I recommend. It's around $85-90 on Amazon. It has the bidet built into the seat which makes cleaning the bowl a lot easier than the bolt-on type that goes on under a existing seat. I had a Luxe Bidet bolt-on and while it worked great it was an issue trying to clean behind the bidet attachment that hangs down into the bowl.

We have two Luxe bidets from Amazon at a cost of $50+ on Amazon. We like them so much we also purchased them for our home up North. No, the water is not heated, but, surprisingly, that doesn’t seem to be a problem. Simple to install and didn’t have to alter our existing toilet seats either.

From Amazon $80. Bidet is built into the seat does, not an add-on. Looks GREAT.

mikeycereal 12-11-2023 10:23 AM

Oh gosh I had seriously thought about getting a bidet for years. That idea arose again when we were discussing it at work in 2018. The 3 of us were talking at our desks and one guy brought it up and said "I was thinking that most people walk around with a dirty butt." He laughed but then we got serious in talking about getting one. I have always used the waterpic shower massager w/hose to clean the undercarriage when showering. So I at least get to that once a day. I also wet the paper when going to the restroom at home and even add a drop of liquid soap on the wet folded TP at the finish.

So I was again thinking about getting one since moving to the villages in 2022. I googled the top ones then I looked them up on Amazon and read many reviews. Along with those who liked them, there was always some problem even with the highest rated ones. The stream was too strong, too weak, messy with water spills, didn't work after a few months, couldn't fit on some toilets. I read 'em all and gave up looking.

I won't know for sure until I try a few. And I'm hesitant to go through the trouble only to have to return it at the UPS store. So what I'm really asking is... umm...can I come over and try anyone's bidet??? :pepper2::1rotfl:

TerryCamlin 12-11-2023 10:27 AM

Everyone should own these they are fantastic. You simply replace your toilet seat. You need an electrical outlet. A reputable electrician should put them in. One went right through our wall via another outlet the cost was a little over $100. The second one for our other bathroom had to go through the attic and cost us about $240. The toilet itself from Amazon under $200. You get your choice of an elongated or round. We preferred the elongated. Both my husband and I love it!! Great present for Mom. This is the one we ordered. ZMJH ZMA102 Bidet Toilet Seat, Elongated Smart Unlimited Warm Water, Vortex Wash, Electronic Heated, Warm Air Dryer, Rear and Front Wash, LED Light, Need Electricity, White, (Elongated).

We have the Kohler C3-325. Same positive results as the rest of the comments here. It does add a little height, which I think is good. It also seems to be slanted forward a bit, also good. $300 on Amazon. TOTO is a great brand as well. Don't know about the seat itself. Looking at tahe TOTO online, it has the remote panel mounted on the side of the seat. I would think a wall mount would be more accessible. Also, FYI, we removed the seat cover. It's huge.

We have a Toto Washlet and love it. Purchased at Ferguson in Orlando but they also have a store in Ocala. You will need an electrical outlet on the wall behind the toilet.

Maker 12-11-2023 01:19 PM

There are a few things that separate them into 2 groups.

1. Non-electric can be thought of as a hose with a unique nozzle. Still need some TP to dry off. Controls are typ along the side of the rear of the seat. If purchasing because of a medical/mobility reason, consider an electric one.

2. Electric types add features. Most significant is heated air to dry you off. Other features are remote control, multiple spray patterns, automated nozzle movements, heated water, heated seat, bowl cleaning spray.
The heated water can be via a small built-in tank, or on-demand tankless heat.
Most people never use TP anymore.
Requires a standard GFCI outlet.

Brondell

I put in 2 Brondell Washlet S300 bidet seats. The S300 is lower end (no pun intended) butt (sic) suits our needs. Brondell has other models with features like a dryer or lights, etc. All our remote controlled and require a 120v gfci outlet close to the toilet and preferably on it's own breaker. We tried initially using a shared breaker, then after troubleshooting mysterious blinking lights to the fact that the bidet's water heater was simply doing its job of cycling on and off to keep the reservoir warm, we put it them dedicated breakers.

I bought the first one from a Villager who bought it and never installed it. The second one I bought on eBay new in the box. eBay was a little cheaper than direct from a store. You will have to buy whatever you want online, as I think nobody is selling them in-store.
