How much rain did you get?

Yesterday was one of the rainiest days since I moved to the Villages and I am trying to figure out how much rain we got.

My rain gauge says about 4.5 inches but my weather app says 2.65 inches. I live in the Sawgrass area.

How much rain did you get?

It appears that everyone got at least 4 inches. Does anyone know how the weather app works as it is about 2 inches off what people have measured?

Not sure which weather app you’re using. Some use a local airport as a default location. So it might be picking up rainfall amounts somewhere else.

We got just under 5” in the Hammock @ Fenney. Think I might need a bigger rain gauge.

I am using the weather app that came with the IPhone. Does anyone know a more accurate one?

Harold.wiser 12-18-2023 04:19 AM

Glenview area: 4.6"

GizmoWhiskers 12-18-2023 04:25 AM

I'm going to ask Santa for a large rain gauge! Would be a bit of fun to watch it fil up. Seems we got a good amount of well needed rain.

Up toward Sumter Landing on Buena Vista Blvd the road was full of water across both lanes. At least 10" or more on the right side.

Down Sized 12-18-2023 04:34 AM

6.5 In Sanibel

gbs317 12-18-2023 04:49 AM

Well I’m thankful that my basement isn’t flooded and I didn’t have to take out my snow shovel. 😁

My gauge said 7" and so did a couple of my friends

Rainger99 12-18-2023 06:11 AM

I have been here since the fall of 2021 and this is by far the most rain I have seen. I saw no flooding in Sawgrass area and none of the ponds in the area are anywhere near reaching the top so I figure that we could easily get a foot of rain without any flooding which is good news.

I have seen videos of the Villages after some hurricanes in which some areas were flooded.

How does the rain compare to those of you who lived here during any hurricanes? Was the flooding caused by the hurricane or was the flooding deliberate by draining the ponds?

I’m kinda unsure as to what you’re exactly looking for. I have over the years had a few weather apps. However, none of them tell me how much precipitation falls in an immediate area. Most only give future estimates. So I have a few to recommend ;

What I now have is an app known as PWS Weather. It hooks into “Backyard” weather stations. So here in the Fenney area, I can “hook into” my neighbors weather station. It tells me current temperatures, dew point, wind speed, wind gusts, etc., It’s on the App Store and you can download it for free. However, it does not tell you future weather, only current data and it resets to “0” at midnight.

In addition to that I also have weather forecast apps from “Weather Underground”, “Elecont” and “My Radar”.

Hope that helps.

My gauge says 6.5”, but honestly we hadn’t had much rain lately, and I don’t know when I last emptied it. Nice to have the rain! We needed it.

Hurricane Irma brought a foot of rain in a day, but no houses were flooded, so far as I know. The flood control system in The Villages is excellent, and of course we don’t get battered by waves or rising tides. If there is a hurricane coming, there are a lot of flood control measures taken in advance that weren’t taken this time because it was a lot more rain than expected in a season when that sort of rain is unusual, but the system handled it just fine.

I had 4.1” in my gauge here in Harbor Hills from Saturday and another tenth of an inch on Sunday . On November 16 of this year we had 4.7” from that storm.

TheWatcher 12-18-2023 07:58 AM

4.23" at Fenney SE

Use an all electronic "Tempest" weather station mounted on an 8 foot pole (no moving parts). It is linked to Weather Underground. You can get hyperlocal weather information online and in their app. Temps, rain, wind, lightning strikes with distance, barometer, etc. Any atmospheric info you can think up including historical info.

Tempest station:
Tempest Weather System
– WeatherFlow

Weather Underground: Local Weather Forecast, News and Conditions | Weather Underground

Wildwood weather data:
Wildwood, FL Weather Conditions | Weather Underground

Here is my station:
Tempest

Historical info is available in most of the established online sites. You just need to dig into the menus or do a Google search.

Stay dry!

TheWatcher 12-18-2023 08:08 AM

As a bonus, the Tempest is linked to my Rachio irrigation controller and can hold a scheduled irrigation event when a set rainfall amount is reached.

Burnie 12-18-2023 09:12 AM

Been here since 2004. Slept like a baby the other night and didn't know it rained hard till my wife told me in the morning. No rain gauge to measure rainfall, because with the great flood control systems here in The Villages I'm not worried. I can't believe so many people have rain gauges.

pattik 12-18-2023 09:19 AM

Our rain gauge read 3.6, in Virginia Trace.
