Mall shooting in Ocala.

I had a visitor whose daughter was up at the Ocala Mall when all this went down this afternoon.

She is fine but quite scared. As is her mother.

The shooter was allegedly a black male dressed in a black hoodie, black pants and had a black mask partially covering his face.

What a terrible thing. I hope they catch the murderer & put him away. He was wearing a mask. Masks are good at hiding criminal's features.

asianthree 12-24-2023 06:52 AM

Sounds like a targeted shooting, if it was random there would have been a very different story in crowded mall two days before Christmas

Hopefully they will catch this suspect very soon.

Search for a red hat taker.

Update.

Quote:

Police issued a statement Sunday afternoon urging the person who took the suspected gunman's red hat from the mall to come forward.

"That hat may contain valuable DNA evidence," police said. "If you do not return the hat within the next few hours, we will release your picture ... and you will be arrested with a felony charge of tampering with evidence."

Not surprised… it meets most violent crimes

Yup no surprise at all. Men account for over 80% of all violent crimes committed.

Last time in Ocala we went out for lunch at a typical chain restaurant. 4 males and their early 20's were seated adjacent to us. 2 had ankle bracelet monitors. The kind you get when you're out on bail for something serious. Aren't people with ankle bracelets not supposed to hang out with other people wearing ankle bracelets?

Ocala has almost double the average crime rate of Florida, and Florida isn't exactly great in that stat in the first place.

This article is from a defense attorney practice in Clearwater. They say the rules are on a case by case basis. They list some of the common rules, 'hanging out with others wearing the devices' isn't listed. It probably is a rule in many cases. Court Ordered GPS Monitor: When Are They Used? - Dean Tsourakis

at least the police put out a complete description of what they are looking for. in Massachusetts, the description would never describe the race of the suspect. its offensive to do so....

mikeycereal 12-25-2023 07:18 AM

I had a nice experience in Paddock Mall in April of this year. The poke bowl in the food court was awesome. When I first heard about the shooting in a Florida mall I was hoping it wasn't this one. There were never any shootings in my hometown malls growing up. They were all very safe places to go. This world has certainly changed.

The thugs in malls along with Amazon have killed many malls. Unfortunately it looks like the Paddock Mall will be next.

True words. Done that way in Minnesota too.

Can't tell you the number of times we heard radio descriptions of perps including height, weight, approximate age and even (in one case) eye color, but nothing mentioned about the most obvious feature of all.

15 years ago, the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel quit printing the race of a suspect. I spoke to the assistant editor who happened to be black. He said it would stereotype Black people I said, do you print if suspect is a male or female? Do you put the color of the car involved in the crime? Would not answer me.

If the police report that the suspect or poi is a black male, that eliminates almost 94% of the population. It seems silly to report height and hair color but not race. What is the reasoning behind this?

I'm also going to bet that's not the answer you were hoping for......:mornincoffee:

The very big flaw with those stats when viewed by race is that Hispanics are considered white in categorizing violent crime by race. That is why those figures add up to 98% of violent crime being committed by whites or blacks. The stats viewed by ethnicity gives better insight into Hispanic violent crime rates and hence, white violent crime rates. Not the answer you were hoping for? Do a little thinking. Do a little digging.

Paddock Mall Shooting

The Paddock Mall has been going downhill for a long time. It used to be a nice mall. Not very big, but nice. My kids grew up in Ocala and we went there frequently. Now, it's just not very nice.

So many malls are closing, with many of those remaining open subject to higher crime.

1. Your memory is flawed.
2. The phrase "happen to be black" makes your assistant editor's race incidental, as though it doesn't really matter. If it didn't matter, you wouldn't have mentioned it.
3. He probably wouldn't answer you because he never told you that, because it just isn't true.
4. The "Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel" isn't a thing. It's called the South Florida Sun Sentinel, and it serves the greater Ft. Lauderdale area.

This is from this past November: Man accused of murdering ex-girlfriend who reported him

There's a photograph of the guy who was arrested. The Sun Sentinel isn't trying to hide his race.

Taltarzac725 12-26-2023 08:36 PM

Wonder where the accused is hiding? Or maybe he went deep into the Ocala Forest where it would be hard for them to find him.

With my brother, I had gone to the Leesburg Mall about 2 weeks ago to see Godzilla Minus One and we did not see more than about a dozen shoppers there. Think there were actually more store or movie theater or food court employees there than mall walkers.

And have not been to Paddock Mall since probably 2014. I would go up there but usually to Hobby Lobby or to the Greyhound Bus terminal to get or return visiting family members.

They are issuing a description of a dangerous suspect who has already killed and is on the loose. Why would the police leave out such an important detail? The more information given, the better chances of a sighting & improved safety of citizens. According to the latest U.S. census, the percentage of Caucasians in Florida is 74.8% or 15.2 million. Half of those whites are males (7.5million) and 74% of white males residing in Florida are between the ages 15-64 or 5.5 million. Thus by including the race of the suspect at large, the police have eliminated 5.5 million men who otherwise could be mistakenly reported to the police and slowing the process to find the real suspect.

My guess would be he is staying with friends or relatives. The reward has been upped to $10,000. so I suspect the authorities think the same as I do.

That is the hat the alleged shooter was wearing.

It looks like the suspect in the mall shooting has 18 prior arrests. The last one being domestic battery by strangulation.
