Knee pain

I am having increased knee pain recently and I am looking for information on any pain medications (cremes) that can be applied to the knees to relieve the pain. I am sure this is muscular pain, and some of the OTC cremes do seem to offer some relief.
So if you found one that worked well that is what I am looking for, I will be going back to my doctor in a few weeks, so I do not need a doctor referral UNLESS this would be required for a specific creme (CBD based?)
Thank you for any information.

Amazon.com

I can only attest to its efficacy relieving some of my occasional pains. I understand it may not be a particularly healthy option, but that's well beyond my expertise. At my age, I'll take efficacy over long term health benefits, anytime.

Voltaren cream. Used to be prescription only. Now available OTC. We get ours at Costco.

What I recommended above, is "generic" Voltaren from Amazon. I've found it equal to the brand name, but that's just me.

I have knee and lower back pain. Tiger balm and magnesium lotion has helped a lot. I use "Life-Flo" brand and buy it on Amazon.

Some of it is arthritis for me... so apple cider vinegar (in ice water) and avoiding gluten really helps!

This inexpensive creme from Walmart is basically Voltaren mixed with Tiger Balm (an anti-inflamatory plus camphor and menthol). It works well for minor muscle and joint pain. Ice helps a lot always. If I have to, ibuprofen for when it's bad.

Hope tinker knee improves, Doug had cortisone and is back in la-la land with Unova.

villagetinker 03-02-2024 07:04 PM

I have tried Voltaren in the past and it did not seem to work. Perform gel does provide some relief, and I had used Tiger balm on occasion (completely forgot about it) and will try that again. Also, tried BluEmu with some relief.
I have heard that some of the CBD(?) based products work, but have no idea of getting or using these.
I appreciate the replies so far.

Pure 100% Emu Oil has always worked for me. Another great item for muscle sprains and bruises is Arnica gel. Pretty amazing stuff.

Please try magnesium lotion. :) Most people are deficient and it's so easy to use.

Have you tried wrapping? The kind weight lifters use in the gym. Or taping, like NFL athletes use.

Orange BlossomBaby may know something about CBD I think.

Heat from heating pad followed by ice from cooled knee pad can help too. 20 min each.

If it is sore muscles, a massager like Theragun under knee or on muscles, not on bone, using soft option, might help. Theragun is great for sore muscles anywhere. Especially if your wife applies it to your back. Mmmm.

I have tried just about every product available for joint arthritis pain. The creams that seem to work for me are icy hot, tiger balm, and arnica cream or gel. I also find that CBD works for me, but it doesn’t work for everyone. I don’t use CBD cream, I take a daily CBD gummy that has no THC and can be purchased online. If you try CBD, be sure it comes from a reputable company whose products are tested by an independent lab (I use a company called Green Roads). Best of luck.

For straight muscle pain, I have always found relief in ice, and heat treatment.
Arthritic pain just heat, and any painkiller that works when too painful.
You may find an elasticated knee brace may help.

My wife tried a CBD based product from the Pharm Stand for wrist pain. They’re in Brownwood and no doctor or prescription is needed. One drawback is it’s kind of expensive

After a lifetime of jogging, running (40 miles per week), training for and running a marathon, and daily long-walks (when I couldn't run anymore) and two knee operations (meniscus repair), numerous cortizone injections (that usually lasted until I got home from the doctor's office), Blue EMU, Voltaren, Bio Freeze, and other topical oinments, as well as acquiring an impressive collection of knee braces/wraps my orthopedic surgeon suggested viscosupplementation (an injection of collagen extracted from the comb of roosters). The first round of injections lasted about six months and, so far, the second round has lasted over 4 years. It is covered by most insurance programs (including Medicare) and provides inflamation relief.

If you think it’s not structural (i.e. knee replacement); then I would recommend stretching.

Yoga is a good option. OR

In Pinellas and Trailwinds (on 466A) there is a Stretch Zone and a Stretch Lab; professional stretching.
They’ve cured me of many ailments caused by tight muscles.
I prefer Stretch Zone (in pinellas).

Salon Pas gel. It comes in a lidocaine cream form and patches as well. I would go with the gel, it really helps. Any drugstore should have, non prescription.

Knee pain, joint pain, tendinitis, fasciitis are all inflammation in the body. The most natural way to get rid of all aches and pains is to change your diet. Eliminate all grains ( wheat & white flour, rice, barley, corn). Eliminate white sugar and all processed foods. Check out books like WheatBelly by Dr William Davis. Grain Brain by Dr David Perlmutter. Your health will be so much better.

My daughter is an MD. Recommends Voltaren. Not all creams work for everyone. May need to try more than one.
I still play baseball (not softball). Oddly, I have found that “horse liniment” works for my shoulder and knees. Recommended by my fam doc. Find it on Amazon. Called Absorbine Veterinary Gel. Orange label. My cousin in the horse biz also recommended it. Smells minty, dries quickly. Good luck!

If you have not tried Hempvana it’s worth a try. I buy on Amazon but it’s also available at Walmart.

I have used all kinds of cream and CBD topical products
None have done much for the pain
Ice heat and Tylenol

Are you certain your pain is only muscular? Many years ago I began having knee pain. What I am going to say I know is not what you asked for, BUT, a friend in the medical field told me I should take Glucosamine (1500 mg) / Chondroitin (1200mg) with, and this is a must, MSM included. I have been taking this for about 15 years now . I am active, playing tennis, etc. and have little to no knee pain. I have found that creams, balms, etc. do not work for me. Probably our conditions differ. For whatever it is worth, and I wish you well.

I am a nurse, so here is what I know, heat for muscle pain, ice for joint (inflammation) pain. Ice can be applied for as long as you want, heat 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off is the rule. Voltaren ( generic is Diclofenac & can be bought everywhere, but cheapest is Walmart’s brand) is an anti-inflammatory medication. This is the topical version of Motrin, Aleve, Ibuprofen meds. This definitely helps if inflammation is the problem. However, most people don’t read the instructions & don’t use enough & rub it in per the instructions. The trick is everyone reacts to topicals differently so it may or may not work for each individual. That being said, joint pain is tough but the rule of thumb in the medical community is ICE…Ice, Compression, Elevation. Good luck. This getting old sucks. 😉

Arnica can be taken orally or used topically in a cream. Frankincese oil topically . Move Free Ultra tablets may help but that’s a long term aid. Hope you get relief soon.

I successfully use DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) for most issues. It's a natural product, and before using it, I highly recommend reading a little booklet: "Healing with DMSO" by Amandha Vollmer. Both are available on Amazon.

DMSO is derived from wood and is a by-product of paper making. It is a powerful free radical scavenger and an effective anti-inflammatory agent. It also has pain-relieving, collagen-softening, and anti-inflammatory characteristics, making it an incredibly effective natural pain reliever. Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) is a colorless and transparent fluid that must be diluted before use.

Regarding CBD, I go to the "Pharm Stand" in Brownwood. I call it the CBD pharmacy. You can ask them questions, and it's a reputable company that I trust.

Good luck!

La lamy 03-03-2024 07:52 AM

I know you're asking about topical applications, but for me it's all about daily stretching of the thigh muscles to keep knee pain at bay. Picking up the foot and gently reaching your heel towards your buttock and holding for a minute until the stretched feeling subsides. If it doesn't feel better in a minute try again with less stretch tension. I wish you well Tinker.

FredMitchell 03-03-2024 08:06 AM

Before self-medicating your self-diagnosis, see an orthopedic (knee) specialist. Osteoarthritis is a common cause of knee joint pain in seniors, which will feel like it is muscular. Another cause could actually be in the hips and not the knees. All it takes is an x-ray. I would recommend seeing Optimotion Orthopaedics. They have an office conveniently located on Rt 44E near Brownwood. If osteoarthritis is your problem, then there are various treatments available.

I had both knees replaced in 2022 after probably 5 years of pain and some loss of motion. Zero pain since then. Yes, I tried chondroitin, etc. first. Results vary depending on fitness and rehab. I returned to full athletic activity 6 weeks after each replacement. Age 70. Fit. Played two hours of pickleball each day for four months before the first replacement.
