Moke Golf Cart Allowed???
Hi Everyone.
Are the Mokes allowed on the golf cart paths? Not sure if they are too wide? I have not seen one yet in the month I have lived here in the Villages. Let me know. Thanks! |
They look rather wide. The site doesn’t give dimensions.
Maybe some one at district government can help. Village Community Development Districts |
Width of Moke golf cart is 60 inches, width of regular golf cart is 48 inches. Some paths like near to sunset point are hardly wide enough for two carts, people sometimes pull their mirrors in. Some turns out of tunnels like the one near Winn-Dixie are narrow, I almost had to curb my cart when a regular size cart turned into the tunnel at the same time as I was coming out. Can you imagine something a full foot wider?

Wouldn’t want one of those things going in the other direction on the Lake Sumter bridge, definitely not enough room.

When is a cart not a cart?

Well, just because something is labeled as a “golf cart” doesn’t necessarily make it so. If I call my Audi an “A3 golf cart” it still stays a car. There are several vehicles that look somewhat like golf carts.

God, I hope not!:loco: |
Given the speed they can do, I would say no.

"Our street legal, electric car is versatile, carbon-free and efficient." Seems much too large for the MMP's to me. |
Would not fit in the lane over the Sumter Lake bridge.

Too wide for Sumter bridge
Might be too wide for diamond lanes Designed for use on the road, not on a golf course Would likely be determined to be not appropriate for the MMPs. Don't know who could officially tell one of those to get off the MMP. District Customer Service would be the right place to start to ask for an official answer. |
Yeah no those aren't golf carts. They're LSVs that have to be registered and insured in Florida, but can't be driven on the main county roads (like 441 or 42 or 301 or 466/466a etc). They can't be driven on "golf-cart-only" paths (such as - on the golf courses), and they are too wide to drive on some of the MMPs or over some of the golf cart bridges. They'd also not make the turn in their own lane under some of the tunnels.

However - it doesn't matter, because LSVs aren't allowed on roads where the posted speed limit exceeds 35MPH. |
This company is electrifying the Mini Moke based on the Austin Mini Cooper. So it would basically be similar to driving your vintage Mini Cooper on the Multi Modal path!
|
In Hawaii a moke is a local bully. When I first saw this thread I thought "omigosh, they're here?"
|
The electric, street legal and open-air low speed vehicle with style, available exclusively in the USA.
Definitely not a golf cart. Starting price of $23k then add in popular options like lithium battery and upgraded seats puts one at $30k or higher. I will pass. |
I googled "moke" and right away my answer would be NO!! Looks like something one would do for "off roading". As others stated it's most likely too wide for what most golf carts would go. Yes---call the district office!!
|
The Moke is a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) by its own definition, not a golf cart. (Florida law is very clear as to the difference.) It is not legal to drive "vehicles" on the MMP, only NON-AUTOMOTIVE traffic such as bicycles, golf carts, pedestrians, and skaters.

On their website spec says 65" width, 25 mph top speed. |

The Moke Cart, which was never designed to be a golf cart, may be determined to be significantly different and not allowed. |
I have an Atomic coupe and, even tho it IS classified as a "golf cart" I would never feel comfortable on a MMP or golf course. I got it street legal and drive ONLY on the streets with a 35mph limit. No problems. I would say NO to a Moke!
|
My wife has an Atomic coupe and uses it on the MMPs and on the golf courses. It does have a slightly greater turning radius than our Yamaha and is a few inches wider but that is not a problem. I see quite a few Atomic coupes, along with their other models, on the MMPs.

Why don’t people just you
A standard cart? |

Reminds me of the old VW “Thing”. I agree the width would be an issue. Think about the maintenance carts used throughout TV. They are probably the same width as a Moke.

Low speed vehicle

This all has me confused. I can’t seem to open the entire pdf linked above. I thought a “low speed vehicle” was the same as a street legal golf cart. Not only that, I asked this question at the Villages Golf Cars: “if I have a street legal golf cart but I don’t register it and I don’t exceed 20 mph, can I just drive it on the MMPs? “. They told me that wouldn’t be an issue because no one would really know it was a low speed vehicle and not a regular golf cart.
It doesn’t matter to me but it is confusing. |

A street legal golf cart is a golf car-like thing that can travel more than 20mph but not more than 25mph, has been equipped with the safety equipment required by Florida law, and has been registered with the DMV (or whatever Florida calls it) Under Florida law it doesn't matter how fast you drive the vehicle, what matters is how fast the vehicle is capable of going. On the other hand, if no traffic enforcement officer measures you going over 20mph then they have no idea the vehicle is capable of going faster than that. They would have no idea it was an unregistered LSV. |

Small electric car doesn't make it a golf cart. Why the heck would anyone want one of those here anyways? They wouldn't fit in ANY golf cart spot. Plus it's over $40k.

The 35mph is the maximum speed limit that the ROAD is allowed to be, to allow an LSV to drive on it. If the speed limit is 40mph, then the LSV is not allowed to drive on it. An LSV is not allowed to be set such that it can drive faster than 25mph. So people are jacking up their carts for the privilege of driving 5mph faster than non-jacked carts. Or, they're jacking them up beyond that, which is illegal, even for an LSV. |
