What happened to Burke’s BBQ? crunch…
2 Attachment(s)
We pass by (466a just past Colony Plaza) each week or so. Burke’s, closed down for a few years now) WAS standing but now - Crunch. Bam. Boom.
No doubt banks took a heavy hit when they closed. Wonder if they have big plans there for building? |
Oh, just another commercial development to cause further traffic congestion on 466a. But, please, not another car wash!

I remember reading about Burke’s around 2015? Or so. The city required him to put water main line for fire hydrant and other fire safety measures. IF I remember correctly he was not going spend thousands Maybe hundred thousands to put water mainline that city should have been responsible for blocks down street from his business so he closed up way I remember it? |
My Landscaper told me that a Trader Joe's will replace Burkes.

We liked Burke's. We miss it. Time marches on, taking some things and leaves only faded memories of cherished bits of the warmth and charm that enticed you here in the first place.

sold, low cost apartments coming...

A shuttered restaurant across from The Villages has been sold as part of a $4.5 million deal. Burke’s BBQ on County Road 466A was part of the nearly 20 acres purchased by Evolve Fruitland LLC, a subsidiary of Greensboro, N.C.-based Evolve Cos. Evolve Cos. is heavily invested in the construction of apartment buildings. The intense need for apartments for workforce housing with proximity to The Villages appears to have been a good fit for Evolve Cos. The barbecue restaurant has remained vacant for several years. The City of Fruitland Park sued Burke, claiming he failed to honor a commitment to hook up to the city’s water and sewer systems and install a fire hydrant outside his eatery. Burke claimed an underground hose running from a nearby private swimming pool could be used to provide water to fight a fire. |

Burke was a character, huh!
In defying Fruitland Park orders to upgrade fire suppression system, he countered with his own plan to pump water thru a garden hose from an adjacent private swimming pool! A real Jedd Clampett |
I heard from my barber’s, brother’s,
veterinarian’s, plumber’s, Toddler that he wasn’t sure. |

Hi. I have a different 'take' on Burke's. I was down in The Villages on a preview plan about 5-6 years ago. The new homes that were being built were directly across the road from Burke's and I had a direct view from the living room of the home I was shown. Now, I have dog and I was concerned he would be attracted the odor of the BBQ meats being cooked. I even went over to Burke's the following day and asked them when they fire up the outdoor BBQ bits. They told be 7am!! So that entire area of new homes was off limits for me. But they were selling like hotcakes, because I was told that area was the build out and new homes were coming. Well, that was surely wrong! Anyway, I haven't moved down quite yet! MarvinH

I wonder if Burke's BBQ was built before Fruitland Park annexed that part of Lake County. If so, that might have something to do with Burke's attitude about the city's demands to bring the property up to code. If so, can't say I blame him. Also, although I enjoyed the food, the restaurant was mostly empty most of the time, so if he wasn't making any money he wouldn't be enthusiastic about spending more.

Burkes promised Fruitland Park they would install the proper water system in case of fire. They never did. They said the water in a nearby swimming pool would be adequate in case of fire. They closed their business rather than comply with the specifications.

Burmese BBQ
A few years ago, before all the building south of 44; I recall hearing about a place to park RV’s. I believe the RV’s had to be visiting folks in TV. It wasn’t going to be open to everyone. I think that was a great idea.
