Have you filed a Roof Warranty Claim with CertainTeed?
I am in Dunedin and was advised to file a roof warranty claim with CertainTeed.
I would appreciate it if someone who has recently and successfully filed such a claim would be willing to share their experience with me. Thank You !!! NOTE: As post#2 points out, this is not an insurance scam, this is a manufacturer defective shingle issue. |
I dont remember the details - BUT before you get the insurance scam posts….
This isn’t a homeowners insurance claim, there was something wrong with the shingles or the install. I think there is a 10 year window to file the claim - I think it mostly impact homes between 466A and 44. Someone with more info will chime in. Here’s a link to a thread with details https://www.talkofthevillages.com/fo...llages-348073/ |
What did home warranty advise?

I filed a claim for mildew stains on the roof. As the original owner, they will clean the roof for free within 10 years. They will be cleaning my roof on Tuesday, April 16. Many of my neighbors have already had their roofs cleaned. It is recommended even if you don't see stains on the roof.

They did a nice job. |
OP, what is the nature of the of the warranty claim, if it is staining, as noted above this is covered, I had ours done at 9.5 years, very happy with the results.
|
I filed a warranty claim with Certain Teed about 2 years ago for defective glue on the shingles. A representative came and inspected the roof and about 3 weeks later we settled the claim. They were easy to work with.

Roof replacement
We are in the Village of Dunedin and when we bought the house in 2020 during the home inspection it was noted that there was a problem with our roof shingles. The roof got replaced at no cost to us because evidently there was a problem with roof shingles and they were under warranty. Quality roofing replaced the roof
|
As the OP, I see I need to be more specific. The warranty issue is not stains, but a result of the manufacturing/cooling issue that occurred around 2014 causing a significant loss of the aggregate allowing in some spots, the fiberglass to show thru.
The kind of information I am looking for is, did you use The Villages Warranty Dept or go directly to CertainTeed? What all did they require? Were they easy to deal with? How long did the process take? Was the "settlement" a roof replacement or "other"? I'm hoping to make this a one and done as opposed to an ongoing process. Thank you |

They will clean your roof within 10 years if you are the first or second owner only. My house is 9 years old and I'm the fourth owner. That's what they told me when I called.

Roof Cleaning
we have lightning protection, does anyone know if the cleaning will affect it?

Update: Today, I called CertainTeed to get an explanation of their algae stain warranty. The algae stain warranty extends for a period of 10 years from the date of construction, for the original owner and for the second owner. So, either owner can file a claim for the house as long as the house is less than 10 years old. During that period, CertainTeed will clean the roof for free. However, a third owner or any subsequent owners have no algae stain warranty. |

My neighbors all had their roofs cleaned by that Leprechaun company and it looked great for maybe a year or two but eventually the dark algae growth came back and now it looks just like mine that was never cleaned. Roofs grow this black algae EVERYWHERE. Your roof is not special or defective. Get over it. I use Spray It And Forget it on my roofs up North and have no lichen or algae growth and they look like new. I'm going to do the same thing here and I am sure it will clean it and keep it that way for at least 5 years.

My experience with Certainteed Roofing.
Quote:
It was a smooth process & roof was cleaned. This was performed a few years ago. Roof looked great until recently, then the staining started to re-appear. It just so happened that my solar heat panels started leaking & I contacted the company that installed solar panels for the pool to repair the leaks. They informed me that my shingles were in bad shape. Most granules on the shingles were missing & sitting in the gutters. Shingles were no longer tacked down. So we contacted Batterbee Roofing to check our roof. The salesman, Rhett, walked the roof & took a video of roof & narrated his findings. Then we sat down & watched the video together. Roof was in bad shape, not only thin, & unglued shingles, but Roof Ridge vents were cracked. So before replacing the solar panels for the pool, we decided to have Batterbee replace the old roof. Batterbee Roofing did an excellent job. Highly recommend this company for their honesty, no hidden fees, and their reputation. So my point is, have the stains cleaned, but if Certainteed is the company that supplied your shingles, they are poor quality. Batterbee uses high quality Owens Corning materials. Saks Roofing was the original company that installed the roof when my home was built, and they must have dropped something that made a hole in the plywood on the roof, & they left the hole & just covered it up with shingles! That was a nightmare waiting to happen! Batterbee had to replace that whole sheet of plywood. I called Home Warranty about the hole & they said I had one year to report it! It could not be seen from the inside or the outside! Unbelievable! |

Roof shingles
[I live in the village of Lake Deaton. I also put in a claim with certainteed. They also ask me to mail in a shingle which my roofer told me is the wrong thing to do. They have replaced many in my neighborhood. The pictures the roofer took showed the deterioration of my shingles. I think at this point it’s gonna take an attorney to do something about this as there’s so many of us. We need to get together and decide what to do. IiQUOTE=kaniess;2328209]Now that several weeks have gone by have there been any updates on resolving warranty compensation for the CertainTeed faulty aggregate roof shingle issue? This does not concern algae staining. I also live in the Village of Dunedin and I've been told that many homes between 466A and 44 have substandard roof shingles.[/QUOTE]

My understanding you are sort of forced to put a new roof on your home, if it is 13 years old to be able to get home owners insurance. A tile roof or metal roof should last far longer than that but the homes are not built to hold the weight of a tile roof and metal roofs are likely not permitted. |
Question Please re: Certainteed.

Was anything resolved with Certainteed?

We too have the problem with the grit. It seems there’s an excessive amount that comes off the roof. They want us to do the same have the shingle removed and shipped to them which seems ridiculous. Our home was a new build in the historic side of TV. Home was built in 2015. Any info would truly be appreciated. |
roof shingles
all the houses built in 2014 probably have bad shingles. certainteed has way to many claims now, i can see them going all the way to a class action lawsuit. im also waiting to hear from them, i did have a roofer pull a shingle and send it in ,its going on 3 weeks now.
|
Can I ask who your roofer was that did the work? Did they replace the shingle? I saw where Certainteed would reimburse about $50 (which I think is ridiculous for what is needed). I was astounded by the process they have in place. I would’ve thought that an inspector would’ve been sent out. I saw that Batterbee Roofing was the roof installer when searching the permits issued when our home was built.

Agree ! Spray and Forget is great ! Don't even need a power washer, just attach bottle to hose and stand there and spray the roof, gutters, anywhere there is mold, algae, mildew, what ever name you prefer. |

I am in the process of trying to do this with certainteed. They are making the process very difficult. They are changing their processing and making you mail in a shingle now and have another roofer come and take an aerial view of your roof. This was not their process Or their promise of inspecting themselves. As many Roofs in my neighborhood have been replaced without any of this. I wonder if anyone that has mailed in a shingle has been promised a new roof. They are not budging on this.
