Hacking cough

Anybody else have or had a hacking cough with phlegm that lasts for 1-2 months? What treatment did you seek and what finally helped?

Papa_lecki 04-27-2024 04:14 PM

I would suggest not going to the internet for health advice.

JohnN 04-27-2024 04:15 PM

I had bronchitis and my doc says it can hang on for a couple of months. Prescribed some Rx cough syrup, but mostly just had to deal with it until it finally went away.

Bjeanj 04-27-2024 05:22 PM

See your doctor.

vintageogauge 04-28-2024 07:50 AM

I had it and my wife had it and it lasted a good 6 to 8 weeks. Doctor said not much can be done with it. I found that Robitussin DM worked the best to break it up and breathe in Vick's Vapo Rub on a handkerchief to open a stuffy nose.

ElDiabloJoe 04-28-2024 07:58 AM

Mrs. EDJ had that for months. I think a year and a half. It was a few years back. Turned out, doctor and pathology diagnosed pertussis. The rest of us call that Whooping Cough. Crazy, right? Wonder why I didn't get it from her? Well, not really - I've never had Covid or Mumps, or Measles, or Chicken Pox or anything besides an occasional sinus infection or common cold. Or food poisoning. Or alcohol poisoning, but that was only once when I turned 21.

Not looking for medical advice. Been to MD. Was just curious how many people had it, how long and what finally helped.

Topspinmo 04-28-2024 09:03 AM

Do you smoke?

MrFlorida 04-28-2024 12:43 PM

maybe urgent care would answer your questions..

OrangeBlossomBaby 04-28-2024 03:44 PM

I had chronic asthmatic bronchitis for around 20 years. It eventually went away by itself.

You will get lots of replies (some are actually decipherable, proofreading is as rare as reading comprehension) but very few actual answers to the question.

DPWM21 04-29-2024 04:57 AM

From 6 weeks to two months. Deep but and decreasing amount of coughs. I have seen others clear faster and some same. Sometimes sleeping on side or upright. Humidifier in dry climates. Hydrate. I have no product to recommend but am going to return to Vicks as an expirament. . Best wishes.

Two Bills 04-29-2024 05:04 AM

Boiling water, a drip or two of Olbas, or Eucalyptus in the bowl, towel over head, inhale. for 5-10 minutes, a few times a day.
Works well.

Rwirish 04-29-2024 05:14 AM

Shouldn’t you be asking your primary physican?

RICH1 04-29-2024 05:19 AM

It's called RSV ... a virus...the harsh symptoms can be prevented ( people argue about getting vaccines, but both Candidates for President received theirs)

Amazing. I was known among my peers as a pretty good diagnostician, but I don't think I could diagnose RSV from an internet post. Congratulations!

For the OP----2 months of a cough meets criteria to perform a chest X-ray---I hope you've had one.

By any chance was that soon after you moved from wherever you used to live to The Villages????? Asking for a friend :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

KatieBon 04-29-2024 05:35 AM

I've heard that sometimes this is a reaction to meds...can't remember if it was blood pressure or cholesterol meds.

GizmoWhiskers 04-29-2024 06:00 AM

Once upon a time FL skies were clear blue. No lingering "smog". There were Spring rains to wash away the pollen, moderate to low wind levels. Anyone remember when we had a Spring rain?

We have a constant haze over T V for reasons people will chalk up to crazy conspiracy theory. Iykyk. Stratospheric Aerosol Injections -weather engineering. Companies all around the world are making billions off of dimming the sun in the name of climate change... to what end?

Look up at the palm trees in The Villages. They should all be VIVID green full of life. Look up. Even on a cloudless day the sky is full of haze.

Breathe it in breathe it out. Cough cough. Sure go to a doctor. Take more meds k-ching. Whatever you do wear your tin foil mask while you breath in that fresh air!

Don't get me wrong... when the timing is right, FL will get its rain. Dubai did with its cloud seeding, but shhhh.

Do feel better. I myself have been coughing for months. Yes, been to the doctor. Ya know must be "allergies" wink wink.

Paperguy 04-29-2024 06:32 AM

Cough

I had the same kind of cough for about 3 years and just thought it was allergies. I happened to mention it to one of friends who said his wife had the same issue and referred to it as the 100 day cough and it was nothing to worry about according to her doctor.

For me,
3 round of Anti-Biotics did nothing. Months of hacking (not on the golf course)
Turned out I needed to go to an ENT. Atlantic Ear Nose and Throat did a wonderful job.
Results: Completely blocked sinuses (all of them), deviated septum, and an lingering infection (because of no drainage).
Cause: Allergies...that are because of being in Florida and not in the North
Cure: Sinus surgery
Feeling much better now!!

It's common among the class of anti-hypertensives known as ACE (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme) inhibitors--- benazepril, enalapril and lisinopril being the most commonly prescribed. Up to 15% or so of people taking these meds can develop a chronic cough, which almost always disappears after withdrawal of the medication. I've treated a few cases where the cough persisted for years, but that was quite rare.

After a month in our Villages home went to NJ and developed the “hack” as you described and theee weeks later feeling a little less congested. Z Pack, eye drops, nose spray and a prescribed sleep time cough medicine. I thought it was New Jersey allergies with beginning of growing season

margaretmattson 04-29-2024 07:04 AM

I have lived in the Villages for 20+ yrs and I get stuffy and congested every winter. Medication doesn't seem to help. I monitor the humidity in my home (raising it if necessary to combat the dry air) and take a hot shower when I can't stand it any longer. Both the humidity and steam always helps.

Kathryn Putt 04-29-2024 07:13 AM

See your doctor!!!

DonnaNi4os 04-29-2024 07:14 AM

Very possibly allergic reaction to the pollen tsunami we have had for weeks on end. If allergy meds do not help it could be something serious. I’d get checked by a medical professional

Lazydaze 04-29-2024 07:35 AM

Wife has the same issue…Dr. Told her it is an allergic reaction to the extremely high pollen counts this Spring.

Mucinex DM helps break up the phlegm and temper the cough. Also drink lots of clear fluids to thin out the phlegm. Preferably water or decaf tea. But hope you talk to your doc about it first.

MrLonzo 04-29-2024 08:34 AM

I get a similar cough every year about this time, some worse than others. I'm sure it's seasonal allergy related. Seems to be much windier lately than normal, stirring up a lot of pollen and other allergens in the air. Sometimes an OTC allergy med will help, but mostly just waiting it out. BTW, I don't smoke and I'm outside a lot. Maybe staying inside with the A/C would help too, but I haven't tried that.

Is that based on board certification in allergy and immunology????? Or just a guess????

Works well.

My mom did this with me but she put Vicks in the water. I had bronchial asthma as a child that went away years later. Had a relapse during both pregnancies.

JP 04-29-2024 09:11 AM

My mother in law, 2 sister inlaws and their husbands all had this 2 month cough. My mother in law is 89 so they kept her off of cough medicine(due to blood pressure) but gave steroids, z-pac, an inhaler, musinex, and a nebulizer. She still has it but it is less.

OhioBuckeye 04-29-2024 09:22 AM

Don’t understand what’s this got to do with a cough?

Sure, it's very easy. All flu and cold cases - in fact ANY cold or flu-like symptoms: Covid.

There, just explained the last 4 years for ya.

Road Apple 04-29-2024 09:51 AM

I’ve had it. Goes away mostly on its own. Called “100 Day Cough”. Google it. But see your doc!

Well, medical knowledge does advance. But until I see more data, I'm with you---it is still primarily a disease of young children, and no physician I know has had the RSV vaccine.
