So I was in Too Jay’s Sumpter

Went in today after Band of Brothers meeting. Wanted to get to-go. Walked in, sat at the bar, and waited…
Noticed a young woman behind the desert cabinet and ask if they had a bartender. You said no, and if I wanted a to-go, ask the hostess for a seat, then order. I thought no thanks. Then the manager walks behind the bar, and I ask him why I couldn’t order from the bar?
His words, now this is 3:52 pm, “The bar is closed at night”.

I saw 6 employees including the manager, and two couples seated in the dining are, so it was not a staffing problem. I think it’s just a lazy problem. Too Jays will be like Sonny’s soon. Poor management.
Really like their food.

barbara828 05-21-2024 07:42 PM

You were in SUMTER, as in Fort Sumter.

PugMom 05-21-2024 08:11 PM

next time go to the one in Brownwood. they're nice, polite & helpful. yes, you can order by asking the girl behind the counter, then wait in the seats for your order. (there is no bar there). if you sit outside they will come & get you when it's ready. i can see why they may want to close the bar early, there's plenty of other places to drink, & don't want inebriated customers

Great to assume if you sit at the bar it’s to drink. I don’t drink. You missed the point. It was 3:52 pm. He said the bar was closed at night. He was lying. He be looking for another job soon enough.

Worst management and staff I've ever seen, is Too Jay's.

Are you saying that the bar was actually open, and he lied about it? Why not just sit at a table as recommended? You could have had your drink. Sorry, but I don't get the level of emotion here.

I’d have to side with Too Jays. You were given advice on where to place a to go order, there are also signs saying “place order here”. Just because you did whatever you felt like doing, doesn’t make them un-accommodating.

The world and all businesses run on procedures, opt to be difficult and you go hungry.

you're correct, My Bad

MrFlorida 05-22-2024 08:14 AM

Sumter , not Sumpter.

kingofbeer 05-22-2024 08:57 AM

This is a deli not a bar to drink at. Come on man!

I don't see a 'level of emotion' on display here that is anything other than conversational

I wasn’t told the bar was closed when I first walked in and sat down. Just move along. Please. I’ve never been to a restaurant before where you had to be seated in the dining room by a host to make a takeout order.
you’ll be happy to know that I won’t be back, but it’ll probably closed soon enough.

You should tell that to Too Jay's, maybe they'll get rid of the bar?

Who knows what they were thinking, when they built the place?

Maybe they thought that Villagers just can't seem to shake the urge to drink, when presented with the opportunity?

You're missing a period at the end of your sentence.

“I’ve never been to a restaurant before where you had to be seated in the dining room by a host to make a takeout order.”

Now that I agree is odd. Assume they would just add you to the regular seated customers and you’ll wait your turn for a waiter to take your order. Then you’ll ask for a “to go” box and the bill and of course pay the suggested 18 - 20% tip. Dumb!!! Take out order should have been taken at a counter. I’m on your side with this one. Thanks for pointing this out.

I would add however that, given the way you worded your exchange with the manager, this may have also been miscommunication. You asked for a bartender while seated at the bar. Perhaps simply asking if someone could handle a take out order would have produced a different response. I’m not a big fan of that restaurant myself. Only saving grace is that they have bialys.

bowlingal 05-23-2024 04:47 AM

It's SUMTER people!!

Rwirish 05-23-2024 04:56 AM

Where is Lake Sumpter?

jim@jedward.com 05-23-2024 06:09 AM

Keep the posts coming. Great entertainment.

NotGolfer 05-23-2024 08:06 AM

When did they add a "bar"? Last time I knew, there is a deli-counter and then the hostess station where she'll take you to a seat. Maybe the OP thought the counter was a bar.

As long as we're on the subject of spelling, it's "dessert"--not "desert"...unless you're into eating sand.

DeeRI 05-23-2024 08:28 AM

You literally said you weren’t there to drink just to get a to go. Some people just don’t read. I get what you were trying to say it was 3:52 in the afternoon and he said the bar is closed at night. I guess nighttime for him in The Villages starts at 3.30? Who knew??

ByebyeMichigan 05-23-2024 09:00 AM

Sumter. No P.

virtualcynthia 05-23-2024 09:17 AM

I’ve never had a problem at TooJays. I guess if you eat out frequently enough, you’re going to have a problem at a restaurant. It doesn’t mean that they’re consistently bad and they should go out of business. Also, there is a bench/seats behind the hostess station where people can sit and wait for their takeout.

Ditto ! I do understand the person posting was annoyed, of course, who even considers the closing time of a bar would be 3:52 ? Not the way I would run my place (if that was my career field), but, it's their business. Can run it any way the want, can even LIE if the wish ! To what end, who knows ? But as a customer you have ONLY two choices, move to table as suggested because you do love the food there, or, just WALK OUT (walking out "might" send a message, but probably not ! Most important, WHY allow these petty annoyances (and YES, I find them everywhere, just yesterday trying to make a purchase and no one to take my money...LOL), but why let it effect ME when I have the option to just "vote with my feet and walk away....LOL.... ? Not take a toll on my mind and body emotionally by even reacting to it ?

Perhaps the manager and staff came from SS Too Jays that closed. Anyway, sometimes you wonder what happen to being polite to customers regardless of customers attitudes.

How do you know that the manager was not polite?

Why is it you never get these types of posts about a Marks Prime or comp. People expect a $6 pork plate and discounted menu items...and wonder why the service blows too. The employees only mirror the management....in my book, thats poison every time. Spend a little more and eat/drink...and take out from independents (especially family owned)

Lots of restaurants around here are medium or so priced and serve acceptable food with good service

For a business not owned by developer they would handle their own recruitment
